NEW FORT MASON’S LANDMARK BUILDINGSUMMER 2009

The American Yacht club has wanted to construct a new landmark building in San Francisco’s Fort Mason port; which will host the American’s Cup. The program includes new master plan, which is will renovate the existing site; giving an opportunity for designers to weave an urban plan with the natural coast.

My concept was inspired from an exercise asking to catch the gesture of boat and wave in the ocean. It is a beautiful moment when boat and wave support each other, moving forward under the wind. Same idea applies on Landmark building which focuses on the balance and harmony of the inward building and its surrounding environment.

The program includes office space, several conference rooms, restaurants, public bathroom and other entertainment areas. The gen-eral public would only have access to the ground floor, while club members would have access to most of the building including the viewing decks.

NEW STAIRCASE IN ARCHITECTURE BUILDINGWINTER 2009

The project was an addition to the existing architecture. The existing building lacked circulation between itself and the adjacent Education Building. The intention of the project was to provide a multi-functional staircase. The addition would become a social seating area with views toward Bishop Peak and direct access to the South. My strategy was to divide the staircase in three parts, main staircase and two landings, which expanded to become seating. The landings were used treated wood stretching out to provide seatis and gathering zones. The primary steel structure cantilevers out from the architecture building to support the addition.

CRESTMONT HOUSING, SANFRANSICO, CAFALL 2009

This design would focus on both the urban plan and architecture. This project is currently under designing by Levy Design Partner-ship, San Francisco. With the narrow square-foot and steeply slope, I divided the houses in two units, one upper the ground and one under street level. Sustainability is encouraged to integrate in this project.

The project was to design an apartment complex in Garden Street San Luis Obispo, located a couple of blocks from business dis-trict. The convenient location allows the residents easy access to downtown throughout the year especially during busy events such as festivals and the weekly farmer market. The difficult aspect of this project was to keep the small scale residential feeling of the site, while constructing a mid size complex.

The corners are cut based on the orientation, and to respect the fire station form, cutting angle to create a deep court yard in the South. Large vertical windows, in Southern side, easily penetrate day lighting directly to the building. Walkway protects Northern-West wind go through building.

The wings will bring a message from Red Cross to people in Haiti who lost everything in the earthquake from the people who would like to help.

There were interesting processes of making wing. I started from reading a literature story: A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings: A Tale for Children. From story, my concept was to design a large scale wing that strongly related to aesthetic and structure. My inspi-ration started from the pursuit of freedom and happiness. With wings you are able to fly freely in the sky and enjoy the freshness of the air and nature. Wings create an escape from our busy lives on the ground.
