April 2015 Page 7Thank you to theLadies of the AnglicanOp Shop for the bagof wool and knittedsquares. Thanks alsoto Pam Corker House

for 2 bags of wool. Thanks to Grantfor a large bag of wool and we extendour sympathy to Grant on the loss ofhis Mum. We helped his mum with adonation of wool because she lovedto crochet. Thank you Barbara forfinishing a lovely pink rug whichsomeone donated as squares.Barbara sewed them together and puta lovely edging on to it. This rug hasbeen donated to Waroona Playgroupto raffle. Barbara also sewed up odd

shaped crocheted pieces into a rug forthe community car. We are hoping onour next charity knitting day, April 2nd –a guest speaker from the local RSL willjoin us so we can present them withsome of the Poppies that Lil, Jane andCoral have completed. There are 104so far and we are still knitting! Lois isstill sewing up squares and I have beengiven some more from this 92 year oldlady. I will help to sew up squares as Ihave some from my Mum who is alsobusy knitting more teddies. It was greatto have Lil back in our company. Wehave heard that Mona from NewZealand will be here on the 1st June for3 months, staying with her daughter in

Valentine’s Day Evening saw theInaugural Official Dressage Event fornewly founded ‘Murray Riding ClubInc’, The Event was held on theWaroona Town Oval, home of the‘Demons’ Football Club, where ridersas far as the Swan Valley Region andSouth of Bunbury attended. MurrayRiding Club Inc, also known as theMurray Adult Riders are based at theMurray Equestrian Centre, Coolupwhich is currently in stage one of amulti-million dollar upgrade project. The event was planned when visitingNew Zealand Dressage Judge –Robert Kofoed confirmed he would bemore than happy to judge an eventwhilst visiting WA ... Along withrespected WA Judges – Denise Barkerand Sharon Addison, the event couldnot have gone smoother, tests wereridden pretty well on time and thefeedback received from all concernedwas nothing but positive. ClubPresident – Noeleen Kentish said “Wewere so pleased to have to use of theOval for the event, at this time of theyear the weather can be so hot, and tobe able to hold an evening underspotlights was something very specialfor us. Our home grounds are in theearly stages of redevelopment and theuse of a local oval was invaluable to

us”, The Shire of Waroona showedgreat confidence and support for theMurray Riding Club allowing dozens ofhorses riding space on the footballoval, and so close to the beginning ofthe football season, they we’re pleasedto find that the grounds were totallyunaffected following the competition, and I’m sure a little relieved. PresidentNoeleen was also pleased to say, “Wehad the support of local businessesfrom the inception of thisevent..Raywell Contracting, CharlesHull Contracting, Schlam Engineering,Curtis Electrical, Woodbury Plumbing,KDH Equestrian, Waroona RuralServices (all Waroona businesses),plus Dunclees Renovations, & TheBendigo Bank. The Waroona Football

Club were more than accommodatingwith the provision of lighting for theevent and Waroona AgriculturalSociety opened their doors and loanedus their beautiful newly refurbishedoffice building on the grounds” MurrayRiding Club Inc Committee would liketo thank everyone who took part in theevent, Wish a huge Congratulations toall of winners and placegetters andhope to see you all again next year forrugs and rosettes galore. Well it has been apretty full on twomonths and I havenever been more proudof being part of thisawesome community.Unfortunately therewas a bushfire and loss

of a home and quite a few otherproperties lost out buildings but therewas no loss of life and that is justamazing. Waroona may be a smallcountry town but its heart is huge andthe way the community bandedtogether is something I will neverforget. My personal thanks to theWaroona Lions Club for keeping mefed, watered and for the much neededlaughs. You guys and girls are justawesome!Thank you, thank you, thank you to allthe lovely ladies that joined us for ourPostie Fashion Party in February. Theamount of people who turned up blewus away and we had to send AmboMike off to raid his patio furniture tobring some much needed chairs.Thank you to the ambos who suppliedthe rather yummy afternoon tea whichwas enjoyed by all. Well except forthose of us who missed out due to twocall outs during the afternoon. I wasreally looking forward to havingsomething scrumptious when I gotback but it was all gone! The afternoon

TIME FOR ANOTHER ACTION PACKED EVENTYouth Action Event WaroonaThe Youth Action Event will be held inWaroona to celebrate National YouthWeek this Thursday the 10th of April. This free event is held annually andhelps to celebrate and recogniseyouth in our community. The actionpacked event, sponsored by Alcoa,Department for Communities and theShire of Waroona will run from 4 to8pm and caters to kids from 12-18years of age, if you have youngerones then it also makes for a greatfamily outing. Skate boards, bikes, scooters, music and lots of kids arethe order of the day at the WaroonaRecreation Centre Skate & Bike Park.In the success of the past few years, back again is Freestyle Now withShaun Jarvis running competitionsand giving skill buildingdemonstrations. The Buz ClimbingWall will be set up on the outsidebasketball courts, setting a greatchallenge for all age groups. For theyounger ones or the young at heart, the place to be may be on the bouncycastle or Billy the Bucking Bullprovided by Beardy’s Bouncy Castles.

Also we will feature the Nifty Nookwho specialise in recycled and artycraft – they will be helping kids tomake and decorate badges and theWaroona Youth Advisory Councilmembers will be turning children intotigers and butterflies with their facepainting skills. Onsite also will be theGP Down South bus providinginformation and promotion of youthhealth along and some interactiveactivities. The Youth Action Event isa popular event held every April, itattracts a crowd of over 200 and thereis something for everyone. During theevening, the Waroona Youth AdvisoryCouncil, who assist with thecoordination of the event, will providea free sausage sizzle, there will alsobe drinks available for sale.Attendees are reminded to bring theirhelmets to join in the Freestyle Skateopportunities. The Shire of Waroonahas some fantastic facilities and it iswonderful to be able to use themcreatively to give our young peopleopportunities and experiences. Welook forward to seeing you at thisgreat event.

neighbourhood and a very nicehouse.”

“Will you sleep in the same bed?”“Yes because it's a very

comfortable mattress”“ Will you let her use MY golf

clubs?”“No because she is left handed!”

This is our final feature in honourof our Anzacs on this 100th

Anniversary year of their landingat Gallipoli and their involvementin “the War to end all wars.” Hereare some photos of local peoplewho volunteered for the SecondWorld War. It must beemphasised that our monthlyfeature has been a minutesnapshot of stories of our WAVolunteers. Many didn’t comehome from the horrors of thewars in which they fought. Theirnames are on the War Memorial inWaroona. Those who came homewere changed for ever.

Hazel Koloski – Air Force

All the pictures are of theVolunteers who worked atGeorge Walmsley & Sons,Waroona. Imagine 15 of youremployees leaving all at onceincluding the sons Raywoodand George. All these peoplecame home. There weremany more volunteers fromWaroona and thesurrounding districts too.

Title: Holiday travel and a hidden pestWhether they are grown bycommercial producers or by homegardeners, many food plants arevulnerable to attack. A fruit fly fromeastern Australia has not becomeestablished here yet, althoughindividual specimens have been foundseveral times. If family or friends arevisiting from interstate, please makethem aware that fruit and vegetablesshould be left at home or dropped intothe quarantine bins at the airport orinterstate check points.Fruit and Vegetable’s worst EnemyWith the exception of pineapple, everyother kind of fruit and manyvegetables are hosts of Queenslandfruit fly (Bactrocera tryoni), which hasspread far beyond its home state toinvade New South Wales, Victoriaand some Pacific islands. If fruit isunprotected the destruction can be100%, so growers and gardeners inaffected areas have to strive to controlthe flies by using a combination offruit bagging, spray baiting, masstrapping and orchard hygiene. How it spreadsQueensland fruit fly maggots arecarried inside fruit and vegetables.QuarantineWestern Australia (QWA) examinesall consignments of fresh producecoming from interstate, to check forthe presence of Queensland fruit flyand other pests. QWA also hasregulations to deter private travellerscarrying fruit and vegetables whenthey enter from interstate by road, railor air. All fresh produce must be

binned upon arrival at State borders. The Queensland fruit fly is slightly

bigger than the Mediterranean fruit fly(Medfly, Ceratitis capitata) with whichmany of us are all too familiar. But adistinct difference in colouring is thebest means of identification. Thethorax is reddish brown with twoyellow “shoulder patches”, theabdomen is dark brown and the wingsare clear, unlike Medfly which is lightbrown in colour, with irregular patchesof black and silver and wings withbrown bands. Most fruit fly activity and

damage occurs between Novemberand May, although they may be seenin cooler months.ControlAs mentioned in January’s edition ofBackyard Buddies, methods tocombat Medfly can be found on ourwebsite agric.wa.gov.au, search‘Mediterranean fruit fly’. If you suspectyou’ve seen Qfly please contact thePest and Disease Information Serviceon 1800 084 881 or email a photo toinfo@agric.wa.gov.au.

If you have a query or want to reportsomething unfamiliar, ring the Pestand Disease Information Service(PaDIS) on Freecall 1800 084 881 oremailinfo@agric.wa.gov.au If sendinga specimen include your contactdetails, where and when you foundthe specimen and any damage youobserved. Post to PaDIS, Departmentof Agriculture and Food, 3 Baron-HayCourt, South Perth WA 6151. You arealso welcome to bring in specimens inperson. For further information visitwww.agric.wa.gov.au

Teens Enjoy Medieval DemonstrationOn Friday night 13 March, MedievalFighting came to Waroona! Steve andDiane Osborne, members of HouseDark Sun and a former Chairperson ofthe Perth Medieval Fayre broughttheir display to Waroona YouthCentre. Armour, swords, staff andshield were on show, and the teensenjoyed a talk on combat through thecenturies. Steve displayed weaponsfrom a variety of cultures includingCeltic, Japanese and Middle Eastern, discussing how they were used inbattle. During a gap in the rain, teensgot an opportunity to try out somemoves with practice “boffer” swordsafter being taught “FIVES” – a patternof strike and defence moves thatfocus on safety. The teens weregrateful to Steve and his wife Dianefor sharing their time and their joy withus. INSUFFCIENT POSTAGEJust a heads up to customers postingmail. A standard business letter sizedenvelope under 50 grams costs70cents. If your letter mail is larger/heavier than this and you only put a70c stamp on it, it attracts aninsufficient postage charge to thereceiver( ie the shortfall in postage)plus a penalty(currently $1.50). Thisassessment can be identifiedanywhere along the delivery process. So if your unsure about the amount

Waroona Visitor Centre NewsIS APRIL REALLY POM POM MONTH???

Yes it is. Now to explain: just forsomething different, yarn in itsnumerous forms will feature strongly atthis year’s Sea to ART Exhibition to beheld at the Waroona Visitor Centre &Gallery in October and this year’s Seato ART will be raising funds for St JohnAmbulance, Waroona Branch. As thiswill be Sea to ART’s eighth year we arelooking to pep things up withsomething a little different tocomplement the wonderful works of ourartists and artisans.  Yarn art is anexciting medium and we know that ourcommunity can turn yarn into objects ofbeauty and interest on many differentlevels – frivolous, fun, and fabulous! There’s too much to talk about on allfronts so we’re inviting artists, artisans, crafties and non-crafties to come alongon for an informal morning tea WedApril 22nd from 10:30am to find out howto get involved in Sea to ART or inIt’sA Yarn Thingor both!! Not surewhether you’re a fit or not?  Well, this isabout inclusiveness, connecting andcommunity so ... yes you will fit J. We’dlove you to come along and hope tosee you there but if you can’t make itthenplease still get involved by calling

And back to pom poms ...St John Ambulance are hoping thatour community will meet the Aprilchallenge and “pom pom” themselvessilly to deliver at least 200 pom pomsin varying colours and sizes to theVisitor Centre before April 30. This issuch a fun way to recycle wool thatyou might otherwise feel too guilty tothrow out ... and a great way just to beinvolved. In art. In community. Western Australia, if you haven’talready done so now is a great time toevaluate your water and feedresources for livestock. Ensureanimals have sufficient food tomaintain them until the season’sopening rains. April is also the monthto check if stock need vaccinations andmonitor animals for deficiencies andworm burden. If you have rubbish inyour paddocks that stock can access, now is a good time to fence-off orremove. If stock are hungry, they mayconsume rubbish and become sick ordie. Also cleaning up paddocks beforethe rain comes can help prevent toxinsfrom leaking into the soil orcontaminating waterways. Prepare

planting of beetroot, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, coriander, celery, leeks, lettuce, parsley, parsnips, peas, radish, silverbeet, spinach, springonions, swedes and turnips. Assummer crops are coming to an end, pick fruit and vegetables to preventspoiling and process to keep for laterin the year. Lightly fertilise yourorchards. Proper nutrition will promoteplant growth and pest resistance.Good multi-purpose granular fertilisersshould be used in small quantities on aregular basis during the growingseason. Foliar sprays of liquidfertilisers such as seasol or fishemulsion are also beneficial duringearly autumn. For small landholders inthe south west we will be attending theDonnybrook Apple Festival, BunburyShow Horse and Country Event andthe Balingup Small Farm Field Day inApril. For more information on othersmall landholder events, visit our SLISFacebook page (facebook.com/DAFWAsmalllandholders) or website(agric.wa.gov.au/slis) Until next time,Jodie.

your property for the rains. If youhaven’t cleaned gutters, downpipes, tanks and rooves it is worth spendingthe time now to prevent gutters andpipes overflowing and causingdamage. If you are collecting water forhousehold use or stock water, checktanks for cleanliness and considerremoving the downpipe to prevent thefirst rain from entering tanks andcarrying dirt and debris into your watersupply. If you have waterways flowingthrough your property check them fordebris that might have fallen in overthe summer and remove to preventdamage to fences or flooding causedby blockages. At the break of theseason regenerating pastures are verysusceptible to grazing pressure. Thegerminating pasture varieties are notlocked into the ground and can bepulled out by the act of grazing andtraffic of livestock over the paddock. This can also dislodge many plants –affecting densities and the potentialproduction of that pasture for the restof the season. Waroona Veterinary Clinic News – April 2015The healing power of honey - why Manuka honey is the bee’s knees in wound

animals with wounds, burns, grazesand as a general first aid. It is naturaland non-toxic for animals and it is anon-adherent gel which reducestrauma at dressing change time.Howto use Manuka Honey:Grosslycontaminated wounds should belavaged thoroughly first with a sterilesaline. Apply Manuka honey (approx.3mm layer) directly to the wound or toa suitable dressing (e.g. on a gauzedressing under a bandage). Dressingchange frequency will depend onclinical circumstances. It can varyfrom once per day for drainingwounds to up to 7 days for unsoileddressings. If wound exudate reachesthe outer layer of the bandage, thedressing must be changed. Honeycan be used on infected and necroticwounds until healed.Cautions:-Honey is not recommended for use inbody cavities or in heavily exudativewounds. In the event of a slow or non-responding wound, please seekveterinary advice.

Although the medicinal use of honeyfor wounds and other traditionalmedical therapies dates back to over6000 years ago, it has recentlyexperienced revived interest in bothmedical and veterinary professionsover the past decade. Due to seriousantimicrobial bacterial resistanceproblems, the natural antimicrobialproperties of honey as a healingagent are now of great interestmedically and has been increasinglyused over the past decade for woundcare. The antimicrobial and wound-healing properties of all honeys aredue to honey’s very high sugarcontent, which forces water out ofbacterial cells, and honey’s naturalacidity which inhibits the growth ofmost bacteria. Honey contains aspecial enzyme called glucoseoxidase, which breaks down glucose(sugars) found in the honey itself intohydrogen peroxide, a  well-knowndisinfectant. This chemical reaction isnaturally activated when it comes intocontact with the moisture from the

wound. However, not all honeys arecreated equal; Manuka honey is wellknown for its special healing propertiesand is the honey of choice for medicalpurposes. Honey has been found tohave some very beneficial effects onwounds: *Attracts and stimulatesthe proliferation and activation of whiteblood cells*Inhibits microbial growth -antibacterial *Protects the wound*Draws lymph into the wound, providingnutrition and decreasing wound swelling*Provides a local source of energy forhealing cells*Provides antioxidants*Provides a moist environment*Accelerates sloughing of devitalisedtissue*Stimulates growth of new bloodvessels and connective tissue*Allowsformation of a protective layer of proteinover the wound. One honey on theveterinary market that we use is thePAW Manuka Wound Gel. It is a sterilemedical grade wound dressing madefrom Leptospermum.sp (Manuka) honey(80%) and natural oils and waxes forwound management. It is ideal for dogs, cats, horses and other companion
