• What knowledge and skills must a student possess to respond articulately and effectively to the prompt?

• What concerns surface when reading the prompt question and text?

• What devices & ideas do you recognize as a reader?

Understanding Guidelines, Scores and Rationales

2012 Rubric/Scoring Guidlines• Identify key words associated with

each score.– Note how the words change with score

• Note the * at the bottom of the scoring guide.

Calibrating with a 5• Completes the essay task, but with no special

insights. • The analysis lacks depth and merely states the

obvious. • Ideas are predictable and the paragraph

development weak. • Ideas presented simplistically and often contain

lapses in diction or syntax. • Demonstrate uneven or insufficient

understanding of how rhetorical strategies create an author's point.

• Writer merely lists what he or she observes in the passage instead of analyzing effect.
