Welcome….WELL! I guess we have reached somewhat of a Milestone with Dulverton Angus, this year marks our 40th year of breeding the Dynamic Dulverton Angus.
It’s been such a wonderful ride; it only feels like yesterday that ANNIE A1 came into the world. Speaking of the Annie’s who would ever have thought that the fledgling family would have produced a Sydney Champi-on Female 1992 Annie G17 and The Sale topper at this year’s Female Production Sale Annie Q182 (twin) @ $15K.
I’m sure that Sal’s and my time at the University of Illinois (per favour of The Angus Judging School Schol-arship Award and Dalgety’s) played a major role in the development of Dulverton. The Meat Science ex-posure has been extremely beneficial to our progression. Yet even after all these years we find it hard to acknowledge the Industry still has problems confronting the fundamental “People Eat Beef”, it is this phrase that has led to the Dulverton Mission Statement,
“There is absolutely No other reason to produce Beef than to Satisfy the Eating Quality Expectations of the Consumer Consistently and Price Competitively”.
This Statement has set the scene for The Dulverton Selection criteria since the early 1990’s. The four Traits include-:
Stayability, Fertility, Calving Ease, Calf rearing ability, Structural Soundness
Feed Efficiency
Eating Quality, Tenderness plus Juiciness & Flavour measured by Marbling
Beef Yield, Bone, Muscle, Fat proportions.
We promote these Traits as the VALUE DETERMINING TRAITS, note that Breedplan does not calculate a Stayability Value.
While we don’t have a Breedplan Index for the four V.D.T.’s I have crudely reported in the Lot notes whether a prospective Lot records in the Top 50% for either three or four of the Breedplan measured V.D.T’s. For example Lot 8 Q156 Top 50% for 4 of 4 V.D.T’s.
We have provided you with the Igenity Beef data so as to include the all important Traits - Stayability and Carcase Measured Marbling, a more accurate indicator of the all important consumer requirements for Juiciness and Flavour. We also report the Igenity Index in the Lot Notes, for example Lot 5 Q108 Igenity V.D.I. 62.5. Please feel free to discuss this concept with either Greg (0427 298 527) or Dick Whale (0427 697 968).
On the Homefront, great to report the addition of two super young fellas to the Shannon Vale Team, Owen Walmsley is an extremely diligent young guy with an amazing work ethic and a good skill set, including keeping The Mulcher working and fencing in subzero conditions. Owen is super keen on his Carcase Competitions, his preferred bull is Lot 50, D. Quantum Q246. Sam Donnelly is at Shannon Vale fulfilling the practical component of his School Based Apprenticeship and Traineeship. Sam has a wonderful affinity with animals and already has grasped the art of Mixing and Feeding out the Bull ration. Sam keen to keep the banter going with Sal re his preference for Stockhorse Stallions, Sam Conman v Sal Playboy and Conduc-tor. Sam’s bull selection Lot 5 Q108 Tim as usual keeps the ‘wheels spinning’ and has often been heard cussing the new One Pass Ausplow Planter which is doing a great job replenishing/renovating Love Grass stands that really got a go on over the three years of the drought. Tim very keen on the Liquid Fertilizer application ability of the Planter, in particular the Potassium products. Tim’s bull selection Lot 65 Q078. Kym, Tim’s partner, is a great help re the day to day running of Shannon Vale, she is a whiz needling and gee we certainly do plenty of that. Kym is a very accomplished horse person having competed in Germany, I reckon she’s great, less rugging for me. Good on you Kym. Fiona continues to be a tower of strength in the office her commitment is greatly appreciated particularly at Catalogue time and since embarking on the Female Sales we have two of them now. Thanks Fi.
We look forward to catching up Sale Day, Monday 26th July at 1.00pm.
Regards,
Chaps & Sal

Genetic Type and Structural AssessmentAll the bulls catalogued for this sale have been inspected and assessed on the Genetic Type and Structure system, by Dick Whale. They were all considered acceptable for soundness and muscling. If any potential buyers would like to discuss any of the bulls prior to the sale, please contact Dick on 0427 697 968.
Structural Soundness Traits:Feet - Evaluation of front and rear feet, with 25 being ideal. Scores less than 25 exhibit some scissor claw in the feet. Scores greater than 25 are open clawed.Rear Leg Set - Evaluation of rear leg structure with 25 being ideal. Scores greater than 25 tend towards being sickle hocked, less than 25 toward post legged.
Feet and Pasterns - Evaluation of the length and strength of pastern and foot angle. Scores greater than 25 indicate stronger pasterns with more depth of heel.
Descriptive Traits:Stature - Evaluation of bulls for maturity pattern and frame size. A stature score of 25 is average. This score may be influenced by age of dam , nutrition, etc.
Capacity - Evaluation combines the depth of rib, spring of rib, and width of chest floor. Scores greater than 25 indicates a bull with larger capacity.
Body Length - Evaluation of body length from point of shoulder to pin bone. Scores greater than 25 indicate longer body length.
Muscle Score - Is the muscularity of the bull devoid of subcutaneous fat. Higher scores indicate animals with higher yield attributes. Scores : 25 = C muscle 30 = C+ 35 = B- 40 = B 45 = B+Doability - The ability of a bull to deposit fat in the fat depots, relative to their peers under a common management regime.
Sheath – To maximize a bulls effective servicing of cows the sheath needs to be ‘tight’ and parallel with the underline. The navel must not be too expressive.
Scores: 5 = Excellent: very tight, parallel with underline, very little navel. 4 = Very Good: tight, almost parallel with underline, slight navel. 3 = Acceptable: not so tight, angle increasing, some navel. 2 = Undesirable: pendulous, increased angle, navel very evident. 1 = Very Undesirable: very pendulous, too much angle, too much navel.
Value Determining Index (VDI) - This Index is calculated from the following Igenity scores: - Stayability - Feed Efficiency - Marbling - Tenderness - Beef Yeild A score of 50 or better is more desirable.

DEFINITIONS OF IGENITY DNA TABLE MATERNAL TRAITS BIRTH WEIGHT (BWT): Variation in birth weight a heifer or bull will pass along to its offspring. A higher score indicates greater genetic potential for heavier birth weight.
CALVING EASE DIRECT (CED): Percentage of unassisted births, indicating greater probability that a calf will be born unassisted out of a first calf heifer. The higher Igenity score will indicate a greater percentage increase in the calving ease direct. CALVING EASE MATERNAL (CEM): The probability that a first calf heifer will calve unassisted. The high-er Igenity score will indicate a greater percentage in the calving ease maternal. DOCILITY (DOC): The animal’s genetic potential to be calm or have calm offspring. The higher Igenity score will indicate a greater percentage of calves with acceptable disposition. HEIFER PREGNANCY RATE (HPR/HPRG): A heifer’s chance of conceiving over a normal breeding sea-son. A higher value is desired. MILK: Indicated as pounds of calf weaning weight affected by the milk production of a calf’s dam. This is not a prediction of actual ponds of milk produced. STAYABILITY (STAY): The chance a heifer will remain in the herd as a productive cow until at least six years of age. The higher Igenity score will indicate a greater percentage increase in stayability. PERFORMANCE TRAITS AVERAGE DAILY GAIN (ADG): Based on the pounds of gain per day. The Igenity score for ADG identi-fies an animal’s genetic potential for post-weaning growth. RESIDUAL FEED INTAKE (RFI): This measure is an indicator of feed efficiency. It is the difference in ani-mal’s daily consumption of feed to achieve the same level of daily gain. Lower RFI equals greater feed effi-ciency. WEANING WEIGHT (WWT): Pounds at age of 205 days. YEARLING WEIGHT (YWT): Pounds at age of 365 days.
CARCASE TRAITS HOT CARCASE WEIGHT (HCW/CWT): Hot carcase weight is the hot or un-chilled weight of the carcase after slaughter and the removal of the head, hide, intestinal tract and internal organs. FAT THICKNESS (FAT): Fat thickness is scored as depth of fat in inches over the rib eye muscle at the 12th rib. Higher thickness scores equate to a lower lean yield. RIB EYE AREA (REA): Rib eye area estimates muscling in beef carcase, and it’s measured inches of the rib eye at the 12th rib. TENDERNESS (TEND/TNDR): Animal’s genetic potential for carcase tenderness (measured by Warner-Bratzler shear force test). A higher Igenity score indicates greater tenderness. USDA MARBLING (MARB/MRB): Marbling score indicates the degree of marbling in the rib eye at the 12th rib expressed in USDA marbling units.
