Junior Class is for kids 5th grade and younger, taught by Jeanna Haney
Chi Rho/CYF class is for young people grades 6-12, taught by Joshua Haney
Throughout this year both classes will be focusing on understanding the depth of God's love for us and because of that love we are called to love and serve others!
September Service Project
The Junior and the Chi Rho Sunday School classes will be partnering with the Disciples Women to assemble
Blessing Bags! This is a gallon size ziploc full of items that will be helpful to those in need or the homeless.
Handing out a Blessing Bag to someone gives you a very real way to meet their immediate needs by
providing them with some basic supplies such as toiletries, water, food and warmth. To make this happen we
need your help! Below is a list of items that are needed to make the blessing bags. Please bring in whatever
you are able during the month of September. We will be putting the bags together on Sun, September 25
during Sunday school so please bring in your items before this date. Thank you so much for your help!

From my heart…
AHCC Search & Call (Update)
The Search & Call team was given a few more profiles to review and consider from our Regional office. Bill Edwards came and met with the team just to discuss how the first round of interviews went and lessons learned from them. We did phone interviews with two of the candidates and then decided to have further conversations with one of them. A face to face interview has been set up with that candidate. As always, the team asks for prayers from our congregation for each of our members and the candidates. We know that God is preparing the person that will be our next called Pastor and we are very excited and honored to be involved in this process.
We are always available if anyone has any questions or concerns. Laurie VanDierendonck
Search and Call members are: Scott Shellabarger-Co chair, Laurie VanDierendonck-Co chair Katy Lee, Josh Haney, Tom Moore, Nancy Martin, Susan Smith
Changes in the office… On August 10, 2016, Lynda Keller, AHCC’s office secretary turned in her resignation to me. I reluctantly accepted it and informed the Moderator and Vice-Moderator.
Lynda has been at the church for 31/2 years and has done a wonderful job of keeping things organized and on track. She will be greatly missed.
Last year she began substituting (on an as needed basis) in the Forest Hills School District and has found that work to be very fulfilling and would like to expand those hours and be free to accept assignments of varying lengths as they are available.
Lynda has graciously agreed to continue working with very flexible hours to help us through this time of transition and, if available, may also help orient a new a secretary.
Her hours will not exceed 16 hours in one week and will be less depending on her school work schedule. We have set it up for her to work M-F, 4-6 PM but if she is not called in to school, those hours will vary. Lynda will be keeping me informed when her hours are different than what has been listed.
The Administrative Team has asked Katy Lee, Susan Smith and Barb Moore to work along with me to do the necessary tasks involved with hiring a new secretary. All three have accepted this task and will appreciate you letting them know if you know someone who might be interested in this part-time position.
I am grateful and I know you are grateful as well for the work and faithful service Lynda has provided to the congregation.
I’ve told Lynda we aren’t saying “good-bye” quite yet - not until we absolutely have to!
Rev. Nancy
Things that make me smile...Sunday School kick-off with a Pancake Breakfast; Sunday School classes for ALL ages! Fellowship activities, visitors, Family Sunday; being able to help - even a little bit - when people stop by the church for help; prayer groups being formed; seeing members care and pray for one another as well as for people they will never meet; outreach that happens - formal and informal, planned and unplanned; summer special music & youth participation.
What makes you smile?
Devotion on August 27:
Praying According to God’s Will Romans 8:27
Since we sometimes pray outside of God’s will, part of the Holy Spirit’s job is to change our minds—not convince God to give us what we want. That’s why the Spirit “searches our hearts” in prayer. Words are not always adequate but if you could see inside a person’s heart, you would know exactly how to interpret their words. That’s what the Spirit does when searching our hearts and then interprets our requests to the Father. Before praying in the will of God two things have to happen. First, we must have a regular intake of Scripture. God’s mind/will is revealed in God’s Word so when we read the Bible we’ll learn how to pray according to God’s will. Second, if our prayers are going to hit the mark we need to practice meditating on the Scriptures. Just as a good cook allows a stew to simmer in order to bring out all the flavors, we need to “marinate” our minds in Scripture and allow it to become part of us. When that happens, we’ll start to see things change in our prayer lives because the Spirit’s intercession is tied to God’s will, which is tied to God’s Word. In the final analysis you may think you know what you want, but God knows what you need!
Blessings, Rev. Nancy

Prayer Groups are forming at AHCC.
Prayer is important for the well-being of the church - for the congregation and for individuals.
The adult Sunday school class has been studying the importance of prayer and suggests that one or more
prayer groups be started at AHCC.
Days, times, formats will be determined by those showing interest in participating in such a group.
Please contact Mary Heeney if you are interested in being part of a prayer group and let her know which
days/times would be good for you. Also let her know if you want to pray “with a group” but will be
praying from home. The goal is to have groups formed by mid-September.

On Friday, August 12 the fellowship group sponsored a Board Game Night. We had an a nice turn out of
approximately 20 and everyone seemed to have a good time. There were lots of hot dogs & snacks for everyone.
The fellowship team met August 22 to plan activities for the upcoming church year.
Our first activity will be the annual church picnic. This will be
held on Saturday, September 24 at Woodland Mound Park at
the Juneberry shelter. Church will furnish hamburgers and
hotdogs on the grill. Please bring your own drinks and a dish
to share. Everything else will be provided. If anyone has any
outdoor games to share, please feel free to bring them.
Planned for Saturday, October 29 , there will be a Trunk or Treat in the church parking
lot from 6:00—8:00 PM. This will be open to all children of the church and the
community. Bring your children, grandchildren, or anyone else you can think of. We are
asking everyone to bring your cars– open your trunks , bring a chair and share your
candy for Halloween. This activity will not only be passing out candy but also an
outreach activity to promote our church . We will pass out info regarding our Sunday School and church
information to all in the community!
No activity in November due to the Turkey Dinner.
Looking ahead to December the team discussed having a Caroling Party. Afterward coming back to the church for
hot chocolate, apple cider and donuts for refreshments.
As you can see we have lots of activities planned for the upcoming year. This past year was our first year we've had
an organized Fellowship Group in awhile. Most of the activities have been well attended .We urge everyone to try
to attend some of the activities we have planned— without your attendance and support this will not be a
successful endeavor. Please come, support, and share in the fun and meet with your church family, you could have
a really good time!
Your Friend in Christ, Laverne

minds us that the Church is more than our con-
gregation or our region. The Christian Church
(Disciples of Christ) includes many kinds of peo-
ple and many points of view, but at our best, we
are essentially and intentionally ONE in our belief
in Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God.

Assembly July 8-12 in Indianapolis. Registration is
open at http://disciples.org/ga Leads the pro-reconciliation/anti-racism work of the Church.
