• Used by medical personnel and anatomists allowing them to explain exactly where on body structure is in relation to another.

• We would say: The ears are located on each side of the head to the right and left of the nose.

• Using anatomical terminology: The ears are lateral to the nose.

Body Planes & Sections

• When preparing to look at internal structures of the body, medical students make a section or a cut. When the section is made through the body wall or an organ, it is made along an imaginary line called a plane.

Body Planes/Sections

• 1. Saggital- seperates body into left and right sides

• 2. Frontal- seperates body or organ into anterior and posterior parts

• 3. Transverse- seperates organ into superioir and inferior parts

With your creature…

• Show me a Sagittal Section

Sagittal/Median plane divides body into?

• Show me a frontal section

Coronal/frontal plane divides body into?

• Show me a transverse section

Transverse/horizontal plane divides body into?

Body Cavities

• 1. Dorsal (protected by bone)– Cranial- contains brain– Spinal- contains spinal cord

• 2. Ventral– Thoracic- contains heart & lungs– Abdominopelvic• Abdominal- contains digestive organs (not protected by

bone)• Pelvic- contains reproductive organs, bladder, rectum
