Mrs. Valerie Matthews, her staff and students at Westhaven Success Academy join 400 other schools across Tennessee in a program that has been instrumental in raising funds for lifesaving cancer research. Westhaven Success Academy took part in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS), Pennies for Patients Program for three weeks during the month of February. Students received boxes to collect spare change to support LLS’s mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma and to improve the quality of life for patients and their families. Students in grades K-5 participated in this influential fund raiser and raised a grand total of $279.11. Ms. Parker’s K-1 class came in first place, Ms. Payne’s 5th grade class came in second place and Mrs. Edward’s 2nd grade class came in third place. Individually, students raised a considerable amount which includes Martaveon Boyce being the first place winner, Austin McCall the second place winner, DeShaun Ricks the third place winner, and Jaylin Ash the fourth place winner.

Dr. Aura Palacio presents at the Memphis in May International Teachers’ Conference
Dr. Aura Palacio is a native of Panama, and has been teaching Spanish as a foreign language for the school district for the past sixteen years. She has taught at the elementary, middle and high school levels. In addition to foreign language education, she holds a MAE and a doctorate degree in Education with a focus in Teacher Leadership. Aura was a recipient for MCS’ Prestige Awards in 2010-2011 and 2012-2013 school years. Outside of the SCS classroom, she is a course instructor at The University of Memphis, teaching entry level Spanish courses.
Dr. Palacio was a guest speaker at this year’s Memphis in May International Teachers Conference. Memphis in May will honor Panama this year. Dr. Palacio’s workshop was titled, “History of the Panama Canal”. During this workshop, she presented, via powerpoint, a historical account of the Panama Canal to the conference attendees. Additionally, she introduced an activity titled, “Passing by the Panama Canal”. The activity included creating a ship, a passport, an imaginary trip using the Panama Canal and maps. I am certain the conference attendees had a meaningful experience, while learning a wealth of information with Dr. Aura Palacio. She is an awesome asset to The Adolescent Parenting Program, so we know they
enjoyed her!

ZUMBA comes to Adolescent Parenting
Wednesday, February 12th was an exciting day for the staff and students at
The Adolescent Parenting Program. Our school nurse invited a guest to
teach a Zumba class to the staff and students. Zumba is an aerobic fitness
program featuring movements inspired by various styles of Latin American
dance. All students and staff who wanted to participate were allowed to
do so. Everyone involved had a great time while getting a great workout!

Physical Science Project
In our Physical Science classes, students took what they learned
about momentum, force, speed, kinetic and potential energy and
used it to create a roller coaster. The students’ goal was to design a
roller coaster ride with hills and turns that would deliver a marble
safely to the end.
Afterwards, the students calculated the mass of the marble, tracked
height, horizontal distance traveled, and the time it takes the marble
to complete the ride so that they can calculate the velocity, potential
energy, kinetic energy, energy lost, and percent efficiency of the
ride. Upon completion, students presented their roller coaster to the
class and demonstrated 3 successful runs as well as presented their
research on roller coasters and how the scientific laws are
demonstrated.
Also, students discussed
personal stories of when they
rode roller coasters and how to
be actively engaged in creating
their own was a fun experience
for them. This was a great
alternative to the paper/pencil
assessment because students
were able to collaborate with
peers, integrate technology, and
be hands own while
demonstrating their knowledge
of the concepts learned.

Poetry Project Poetry is literary work in which special intensity is given to the expression of feelings and ideas by the use of distinctive style and rhythm; poems collectively or as a genre of literature. Perhaps the most vital element of sound in poetry is rhythm. Often the rhythm of each line is arranged in a particular meter. Free verse, the rhythm of lines is often organized into looser units of cadence. Project: Students will make a poetry book of at least 6 original poems (IF THE STUDENT WANTS TO DO MORE THAN 6, THAT WOULD BE GREAT!). Each poem must be at least 15 stanzas or lines with a different theme for each. Every student will do a “Photo Poem”. The Photo Poem is a poem that will consist of a personal photo, picture from a magazine or newspaper. Students will create a 15-line poem telling the story of the photo, or from the perspective of the person in the photo. If the photo is of a place or thing, students will write a poem from the perspective of that place or thing.

FAFSA Completion Project MLK once again obtained the goal of 100% FAFSA completion for seniors who anticipate enrolling in college in August of 2014. The deadline in order for students to receive both federal and state aid was January 31, 2014. This was accomplished by making meetings available in different areas of the city through partnerships with various churches, schools, community organizations, and the Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation (TSAC). Many thanks to Ms. Felicia Orr from TSAC for assisting with this endeavor! Bar Kays come to MLK On Wednesday, February 26, the Memphis Bar Kays blessed the students and staff at MLK Academy with a surprise visit. Dr. Jeffrey Futrell of Young Men University arranged the visit. Mr. Larry Dodson came to tell the kids about a scholarship opportunity at LeMoyne Owen College. He closed his visit with one of his hit songs.

This year’s African American
History program featured
aspects from the performing
arts. Students performed a skit
of Rosa Parks on the bus in
Montgomery, Alabama. They
also performed a rap Self
Destruction, which was
centered around the theme
Power of a Dream. Poetry by
African American authors and
poets was resisted. The
program closed with a big
surprise. Students were
surprised to learn their English
teacher, Ms. Morris could rap.

Career Day Thursday, February 27, 2014, marked MLK’s annual Career and College Readiness Day. The day featured representatives from various colleges and employment firms. The purpose is always to match students up with real time experiences in employment fields that are lucrative, attractive to the students, and have a need our students will one day fulfill. This year’s event featured the Memphis Fire Department, Tennessee College of Applied Technology, Brick Masons, Mid South Community College, LeMoyne Owen College, Jackson Hewitt Tax Service, United States Navy, United States Post Office, and Financial Aid. Students were provided the opportunity to visit each booth in small groups. Ambassadors for this year’s event were Shanekquah Beason and Marquis Greer.
