This Latin style chart is based on the chord changes to “My Little SuedeShoes” by Charlie Parker. The ensemble figures are accessible toyounger players, but represent good examples of authentic cha chastyle. Have the group listen to recordings of standard cha cha stylecharts such as “Oye Como Va” by Tito Peunte or “Guachi Guaro” byCal Tjader and then emulate that style on passages such as in mea-sures 57-83. It is also suggested to have all players learn the rhythmsand accentuations in the auxiliary percussion parts (clave, guiro, con-gas, etc.) as this will guide their performance throughout.
The solo section at measure 49 is a very common progression found insalsa and Latin jazz music. While standard chord and scale relationshipwork is always useful, it is recommended to have students work onhearing and playing appropriate rhythms on 1 or 2 notes in the key tobuild vocabulary. Professional recordings and material from thearrangement are a wonderful source for rhythms of this type. The solosection is open for any soloist, and solo sheets are provided in all keyswhich includes a sample written solo and scales that can be used toencourage young players to create their own solo.

A native of Springfield, Virginia, Ryan Adamsons is based in Chicago where heis an active composer, performer, and educator. Ryan has received Bachelor ofScience Degrees in Jazz Studies and Brass Performance from the University ofAkron (OH), and also graduated with distinction from DePaul University inChicago (IL) with a Masters of Music concentrating in Jazz Composition. Anaward-winning composer and sought after clinician, he has taught numerousgroups in the United States and Japan. He currently works as an Artist Advisorat the Denis Wick/Vandoren Musician’s Advisory Studio in downtown Chicago,and serves on the Board of Directors for the Chicago Jazz Orchestra as theirDirector of Educational Programs. Ryan also chairs the mentoring program ofthe Jazz Education Network, a project aimed at fostering young jazz musiciansin various fields of study and industry.
