COMMUNITY SHOUTOUTHealthy Start Learning Center5815 N 60th StOmaha, NE 68104 HealthyStartLearningCenter.com
Healthy Start Learning Center started out of our home and through quality childcare and word of mouth, had more families wanting our services. The minute I walked into our prospective building I had the vision of what could be possible and went for it and it has turned out perfectly.
On May 1, 2013 we opened our newly remodeled facility with a very large infant area that is not only stimulating to the babies but very educational as well.
Our facility teaches children healthy eating and exercise habits with an emphasis on nutrition. Not only are they told about good eating/exercise habits but they are shown how to make those choices. Each Friday is “Fit Friday” and we have a lot of fun with it. The children are also educated on what an important part of being healthy has to do with fitness and exercise. We are proud members of: FOSTER GRANDPARENT PROGRAM which is sponsored locally by ENOA and administered nationally by the Corporation for National Service. AEYC: Association for the Education of Young Children. TNT: Team Nebraska Triathlon

BUILDING CHAMPIONSIN THE RING AND IN LIFEmidamericama.com
1. FIND RACES THAT SUPPORT THE RIGHT CHARITIES.For me, finding the right charity to run for is absolutely key in feeling good about myself after paying to run a 5k. I’ve run many 5k’s, but I always feel a little cheated after running in the bigger traveling racing series. For one, even though those races claim to support charities, it’s often a very small percentage. Another reason I’ve learned to stay away is because they aren’t as committed to complying with 5k standards. I’ve run two separate running series races in which the distances have been completely shorter than 3.1 miles. If I’m going to pay for a race, I want to run what I’ve paid for.
However, don’t let me deter you from those races. It’s cool to be able to say you’ve run these big races of which everyone’s been a part, and they always have way cooler gear they’re giving away. Just try to find out what percentage actually goes to what you’re supporting. Don’t let yourself be swindled for a shorter race. No matter what, you’re sure to get a cool t-shirt!
2. PLAN ENOUGH TIME TO TRAIN.If you don’t set a running schedule out for yourself in advance, you’re bound to make excuses not to run. For those people who run all the time and train for bigger races, a 5k may be easy, but those who plan to go out and run a 5k without training are bound to be in a world of hurt the next day (if not during the race). Set goals for yourself. Don’t start right away with 3.1 miles, but build up to it. Find a good training schedule online. Before your race, run a few times over 3.1, so your body will find a 5k easy when it’s race time. And don’t be discouraged if you’re running slowly in training. During race day, your adrenaline will be running so quickly that you’re bound to shave off a few minutes from your training time.
3. RUNNING ISN’T ENOUGH.Along with your running, you need to be doing some sort of cross training—basically anything different from running. When I train for a race, whether it’s a 5k or a half marathon, I like to save my Sundays for an Insanity workout. I’ve also heard great things about Jillian Michaels and P90X. Any workout video you find or any strength building classes you take can help you strengthen muscles you don’t really think you use while you run, but once you workout and then run later, you’ll find that your body needs to be worked in different ways. This can help you prevent muscle injuries and will better help the muscles to take in oxygen.
Also, you don’t need to be so consistent in your runs. Try running intervals. Try a short run on Tuesday, a longer run on Wednesday, a short run on Thursday, and a really long run on Satur-day. Break it up to make it interesting. Work your body in different ways because if you don’t, your body will become used to your one and only workout.
4. GET TO KNOW YOUR BODY.No one can tell you exactly how much you need to stretch, how long you need to warm-up, what you need to eat or drink, etc. Only you can figure that out by getting to know your body. What I can tell you is that you need to listen to your body. HYDRATE. Do you have a headache from your run? You probably didn’t drink enough water. Also, after a long run, chocolate milk can make you feel pretty amazing. REST. I’m not kidding. Okay, don’t make excuses not to run, but if you honestly have been working yourself pretty hard in this training, you need to rest. Your body can’t continuously be in overdrive. LISTEN to your body.
Tips for Taking on Long Distance Races
Upcoming RACES/MARATHONS
5. FIND A BUDDY.This is a tip I need to follow myself. I really like to run alone. I like to compete against myself, I love jamming to my own music, and oftentimes, I don’t want to feel ashamed when someone is running faster than me or can easily do more miles. BUT running alone is not always a good thing. 1) Running with a buddy is safer. 2)Whether I like it or not, a faster runner can get me out of my regular routine and push me to be better, and if I’m running with someone slower, I can be pushing him/her to be better. That’s a bonus, right? 3) Listening to music while running outside is not only dangerous, but it also doesn’t help in becoming a better runner either. Talking to your buddy while running helps your breathing. You have to learn to be in control of your breathing while you’re running and talking at the same time, and this ultimately helps you to be a better runner.
Once again, don’t let this tip deter you from running. I am struggling with this tip myself. If running by yourself is the only way for you, than do it! After all, what is that saying? “Any mile you run is lapping anyone on the couch.” Be proud of what you accomplish, even if it doesn’t feel like much. Something I tell myself before every run is “a horrible run is still a run. Just get it done.”

West Omaha is well represented with chain and large independent restaurants, but when you enter Harvest Café & Wine Bar, you will immediately notice the vast difference in décor, service and especially food quality as compared to it’s competition. Chances are you’ll be greeted and talk with Tom Sawyer, owner and proprietor.
Harvest is located in Lakeside Hills Plaza at 168th & Center in West Omaha. It’s a bit of a challenge to find, but well worth the journey.
The setting is comfortable yet classy. Chocolate brown carpeting & leather chairs, granite table tops, custom art work while pendant lighting is providing the mood.
We find the food on our first visit is the high point of the evening, and what an experi-ence it is! We discover each plate is well presented and plentiful portions.
The night commences with Pork Belly Cabbage Wraps. Ample portion for up to four. The presentation is 4 large Napa cabbage leaves served with a well balanced sauté mixture of pork belly, mushrooms, red peppers and Asian dressing that consists of a mild snap from the ginger, spicy soy and jalapeño blend.
We also experience the Seared Sea Scallops with bacon risotto. Of course, everything is better with bacon- this is no exception. The scallops are impeccable in texture, taste and appearance. The risotto has a creamy texture and the slow cooking approach is well executed with the butter, wine and cheese blending just right.
The Tenderloin Beef Kabobs is a simpler dish with unpretentious flavors. Tenderloin beef (an abundant portion) are grilled along with quartered white onions, mushrooms and green bell peppers. The wild rice is the perfect foundation for a great summer dish.
The Grilled Mongolian Pork Loin is truly superior. The veggie mix of carrots, cauliflower, broccoli and squash are flawlessly prepared al dente. The 8 ounce pork is well executed and marinated in a Hoisin sauce that is fragrant with a slight salty & sweet flavor.
Restaurant REVIEWThe Salmon En Croute is one of Harvest’s signature dishes. Fresh Atlantic salmon is wrapped in a puff pastry dough and baked to medium well done. The dish is served with a Beurre Blanc (French for “white butter) is velvety smooth. Once again the al dente veggies are spot on.
Service is attentive and informative. Tom himself helped direct us with selection and recipe information. I later talked with the chef in regards to some of the finer points of ingredients, cooking procedures and sourcing of product. He is very knowledgeable and eager to experiment with bringing the food to the forefront.
Prices are reasonable with lunches averaging $10 to $12 and Dinners $12 to $18 with some entrees on the higher end. The comprehensive wine list includes 62 selections by the bottle and a number by the glass. Harvests Cabernets include on the sophisticated end with Silver Oak, Cakebread and Caymus, yet approachable with Josh Cellars, William Hill Estate and J.Lohr. The other categories are also well represented. Harvest has a full bar, homemade desserts, and upcscale hot tea service
Upcoming events/promotions: $2 per glass Eco Chardonnay all of August and September, August 29th is their first wine tasting with Quail Wine Distributors, and the month of September is the 1st Anniversary celebration and also the new fall menu launch.
They do take reservations, however walk in customers are acceptable. You can also make reservation on www.opentable.com

Its American fare in a slightly French style with a fine dining pre-sentation...but nothing is ever over $14.00. Every condiment, sauce, dressing, sausage, ...you name it, we make it in house from scratch. We offer at least two vegan, two gluten free and a lot of vegetarian, but also have a meat, chicken, seafood and pasta on every menu...which changes with market prices and seasons.
Reviews:The beet salad is a surprising blend of sweet and sour that pleasantly surprised me and is one of the vegan selections offered. The next dish was the tri-tip and risotto. A little slice of heaven!
The food was incredible & the most expensive item was only $14. I would’ve expected to pay double that for he duck. Definitely try this new restaurant!
The atmosphere is warm and cozy, and all of the staff are friendly and professional, but not stuffy. The food, fresh and unique, and prices not over the top. Live guitar music by 3 young musicians. Wonderful!
Menu Examples:Brisket - Roasted tomato – jack cheese – house made aioli Grilled Pork Tenderloin - Raspberry Mustard – Feta Cheese Cheese Plate Sandwich - Selection of Danish blue Italian Goat and Feta with grilled pearsMeatloaf sliders - avocado – Bacon, bbq – cheddar, bleu cheese – onion marmaladeAlmond Chicken on Romaine Wrap shallot, garlic, white wine, almond pureeLamb chop on risotto - Mushroom – roasted tomato – kale – scallion

Eli Caniglia and his four brothers started the first pizzeria in Omaha, which evolved into the Ital-ian Steak houses we know today.
The Venice Inn began in 1957. Relaxed elegance defines the party rooms for any occasion. From an intimate gathering to a large celebratory party, you can slip away this time of year and enjoy a tropical drink in the new outdoor dining deck while enjoying your favorite sport on TV. Or listen to live music on the weekends in their upscale lounge. The Venice Inn serves Omaha’s finest choice of Steaks, Chops, and Prime Rib, specializing in Sicilian and Italian Dinners, along with fresh Seafood, Fish, Chicken dishes, and Pizzas. It seats a total of 450 and takes great pride in their intimate banquet rooms that seat 20 to 175 for all occasions.
Reviews:My wife and I have been eating at Caniglia’s for over 10 yrs. Chuck and Jerry always send out a wonderful meal at a great price. I’ve always had a superb experience at Venice Inn!! I always recommend it to my friends!! My dining experiences at the Venice Inn go back 35 years. It has progressed from a great place to eat, to a destination for my business associates and my children’s graduation parties and prenuptial dinners.
