Electrically Heated Glass Articles

There are two methods of using electrically heated glass articles: as a multilayer glass (triplex) andas a multiple glass unit, Fig. 1.Electrically heated glass articles are made of glass manufactured in compliance with the GOSTstandard, including low-emission electrically conductive glass (K glass) acting as a glass heater. The low-emission electrically conductive glass is additionally equipped with electrodes havingterminals for connection to a 12 to 380 V power source. The K glass is coated with silver-bearingelectrically conductive paint. The coating is applied by silk screen printing.

When passing current on a covering of low-emission electrically conductive glass which size isdefined by the specific power of heating is allocated. Depending on purpose of an electricallyheated glass articles product the recommended range of specific capacity is:

• for defogging the glass articles 100 – 300 W/𝑚2

• For removal of snow deposits 300 – 500 W/𝑚2

• Removal of ice crust under far north operaiting conditions 700 – 800 W/𝑚2

The low-emission electrically conductive coating remains highly resistant to weather impact formany years if stored under normal conditions. Whereupon electric heating characteristics remainunchanged. Light transmittance and external appearance of the K glass electrically conductivecoating remain unchanged when heated.Using EVA and PVB type triplex foil in the electrically heated multilayer glass ensures highmoisture resistance and electric safety of the glass articles.

The range of specific power consumed by an electrically heated glass article is chosen depending onits purpose. Studies of various forms and purposes heating glass allowed us to identify the pattern ofchange of a heated glass relative temperature depending on its consumed specific power, Fig. 4.

Relative temperature is differencebetween the ambient temperatureand a heated glass surfacetemperature.Example: a heated roof multiple glassunit having 1000 x 1000 dimensions. The purpose of the glass unit is toremove snow deposits. Ambienttemperature: - 14°C, roomtemperature +25°C, Fig. 5

It is necessary to heat the external glass surface (K glass) to +1°C temperature in order toremove snow deposits under the specified climatic conditions; therefore, relative heatingtemperature must amount to +15°C. Specific power must amout to 250 – 350 (W/𝑚2 ).Thereby, a multiple glass unit having 1000x1000 dimensions will consume 250-350 W/h inthe snow deposits removal mode.
