One eye on SeptemberThe race for finals is on in earnest, with only five weekends of home-and-away action remaining in our Peter Jackson VFL, Swisse Wellness VFL Women’s and TAC Cup competitions. This VFL season is shaping as one of the more intriguing in recent memory, with just three games currently separating third from tenth on the ladder. As Richmond and the Casey Demons look set to battle it out for the minor premiership, the eight teams behind them have a September berth – and a finals double chance – still to play for.
It’s particularly pleasing that all club models are represented in this group of contenders, from AFL standalones such the Tigers to AFL-aligned clubs like the Box Hill Hawks and VFL standalones Williamstown and Port Melbourne.
To further emphasise the evenness of the competition this year, four of the bottom five teams have taken the scalp of at least one of these contenders.
The VFL Women’s season has seen some consistently strong performances from the top four teams on the ladder – Collingwood, NT Thunder, Hawthorn and Geelong Cats. Again, it’s pleasing to note the diff erence that the top two were competition entrants for 2018 and the latter two are building on promising inaugural campaigns in 2017.
Meanwhile, the Dandenong Stingrays have just about taken all before them in the TAC Cup, but the introduction of a wildcard round on the first weekend of September means every club still has a chance to meet them in the finals.
While there’s so much interest in on-field events, AFL Victoria would also like fans to recognise what’s happening off the field.
We’re encouraging clubs across the state to nominate long-standing volunteers for the Swisse Best Off Ground competition, which is all about acknowledging the behind-the-scenes heroes who are as integral to clubs as the players themselves.
With tickets to the 2018 Brownlow Medal and Toyota AFL Grand Final up for grabs, it’s worth keeping an eye on our competition websites and social media accounts for details on how to enter.

Peter Jackson VFL preview – Round 17A four-game Peter Jackson VFL Round 17 presents a chance for the likes of Richmond and the Box Hill Hawks to shore up their positions in the top eight, while 10th-placed North Melbourne faces a crunch match against Collingwood.
RICHMOND vs WERRIBEE – Saturday 10.45am @ Swinburne Centre[LIVE VIDEO STREAM on richmondfc.com.au]
LAST ENCOUNTER2018 Rd 4 @ Avalon Airport Oval: Richmond 17.16 (118) d Werribee 11.14 (80)
FORM COMING INRichmond (1st, 12-2) won a fift h game on the trot in defeating Sandringham by 66 points in Round 16. Werribee (15th, 4-10) was last week unable to record back-to-back wins for the first time this season, suff ering a 27-point loss to the Northern Blues.
KEY QUESTIONCan anything stop Richmond this season? Much of the success of last year’s VFL grand finalists likely has to do with Richmond’s AFL team staying remarkably stable. Injuries at the top level might be all that can stop this juggernaut, as key names such as Miles, Lloyd, Townsend, Ellis and Menadue are called upon to fill holes in the big league.
KEY STATRichmond’s eff iciency in possession this season was perhaps best illustrated in Round 4, the victors that day recording 97 fewer touches and 95 fewer marks than Werribee but still generating 61 inside-50s to 51 as well as 17 goals. Indeed, Richmond is the VFL’s clear top-ranked team for disposals per goal (Werribee ranks third).
SANDRINGHAM vs BOX HILL HAWKS – Saturday 2.10pm @ Trevor Barker Beach Oval
[LIVE on Channel 7 / 3WBC radio]
LAST ENCOUNTER2018 Rd 5 @ Box Hill City Oval: Box Hill Hawks 18.11 (119) d Sandringham 8.7 (55)
FORM COMING INSandringham’s (11th, 5-8-1) rollercoaster win-loss run (with one draw) stretching back to Round 7 was broken with last week’s 66-point loss to Richmond aft er falling to Geelong the round prior. The Hawks (5th, 8-5) recorded back-to-back wins in defeating Port Melbourne by 43 points two weeks ago before a bye.
KEY QUESTION What impact does this game have on Box Hill’s top-four hopes? The Hawks are only one game behind fourth-placed Williamstown – from one fewer match – but still have tests against top-six teams Collingwood (Round 18), the Casey Demons (20) and Geelong (21) to come. Banking wins against the Zebras and Werribee (Round 19) will be crucial in Box Hill’s quest.
KEY STATSandringham will need to improve its defence and its forward-line eff iciency to defeat the Hawks, if the teams’ Round 5 clash is any indication. That day, the Zebras won the contested-possession and clearance counts to help generate 47 inside-50s to 41 but could only manage eight goals (17 per cent eff iciency) to Box Hill’s 18 (44 per cent).

VV
NORTH MELBOURNE vs COLLINGWOOD – Sunday 1pm @ Avalon Airport Oval
[LIVE VIDEO STREAM on vfl.com.au / VFL Live / Casey Radio]
LAST ENCOUNTERNever played
FORM COMING INNorth Melbourne (10th, 7-7) broke a two-game losing streak with a 58-point win against Frankston in Round 16. Collingwood (6th, 8-5) has notched consecutive victories against Werribee and then Essendon by 26 points last week.
KEY QUESTIONDo the Kangaroos get cold feet against AFL standalones? North Melbourne has strangely lost all five games it has played against fellow AFL standalone clubs like the Magpies by an average of 76 points, while holding a 7-2 record against all other teams. The Kangaroos need to turn around this trend to keep their flickering finals flame alight.
KEY STATExpect Collingwood to try to control possession against North Melbourne. The Magpies rank third in the VFL for disposals per game, averaging 50 more than their 12th-ranked opponents as well as 16 more marks. However, the Kangaroos are eff icient when they do get the ball, ranking third for goals scored per inside-50 – just ahead of Collingwood.
NORTHERN BLUES vs FRANKSTON – Saturday 2pm @ IKON Park
LAST ENCOUNTER2018 Rd 5 @ SkyBus Stadium: Northern Blues 14.11 (95) d Frankston 8.8 (56)
FORM COMING INThe Blues (13th, 3-10) rebounded from back-to-back defeats to account for Werribee by 27 points last week. Frankston (14th, 2-12) has lost eight games in a row aft er falling to North Melbourne by 58 points in Round 16.
KEY QUESTIONCan the Blues do it for their home fans this time? The boys from Preston City Oval and IKON Park haven’t given local supporters much to cheer about this year, with all three of their wins coming away from home (against the Dolphins, Collingwood and Werribee) and losing all six games at their home grounds by an average of 60 points.
KEY STATA key battle in the middle of the ground will pit Blues captain Tom Wilson against Frankston’s former AFL-listed on-baller Will Fordham. Both are enjoying standout statistical seasons within their clubs, with Wilson averaging 23 disposals, seven clearances and seven tackles per game and Fordham averaging 21, five and five respectively.
The Northern Blues were too strong for Frankston in Round 5

Key injuries for contendersA couple of Peter Jackson VFL clubs in the thick of the finals race have suffered blows in recent weeks, with key players at Port Melbourne and Williamstown succumbing to serious knee injuries.Tough Borough midfielder Isaac Conway was ranked second in the VFL for total tackles and fourth for clearances before rupturing his ACL in the Round 15 loss to the Box Hill Hawks, while Seagulls playmaker Jack Dorgan suff ered the same fate before his team’s clash with Footscray last week – Dorgan’s fourth such injury.
Conway’s bad luck followed an ACL injury for his sister Sophie – who was set to play her first match for Richmond’s Swisse Wellness VFL Women’s team – just two weeks prior.
In other key injuries at clubs with an eye on September:

VFL Women’s preview – Round 12There may be only four matches in Swisse Wellness VFL Women’s Round 12, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty of action to follow.
By Meg Saultry
CARLTON vs RICHMOND – Saturday 11.30am @ IKON Park
[LIVE on WARF Radio / RSN Carnival]
FORM COMING INAft er winning their first game in six matches in Round 10, Carlton (10th, 3-7) found themselves on the losing side once again in a 17-point defeat at the hands of traditional rival Collingwood last week. Richmond (9th, 3-7) was subjected to their fourth loss in as many weeks in Round 11, losing to NT Thunder by 23 points.
KEY QUESTIONCan Carlton compete against Richmond’s hardness around the ball? The Tigers are one of the top five sides in the competition for contested possessions and hard-ball gets per game, with players such as Phoebe Monahan, Lauren Tesoriero and Jenna Colwell standouts in these areas. The Blues sit at the lower end of the competition in regard to the contest but do possess a trump card in young contested-ball winner Tyla Hanks. An exciting match up could well be Hanks and Tesoriero jostling for clearances.
KEY STAT31-year-old Courtney Wakefield had her best game for Richmond in their Round 11 loss to NT, finishing with five contested marks and three of her team’s four goals. In similar fashion, it was Kristi Harvey from Carlton who slotted three of her team’s four majors against the Magpies last week, in what was also her biggest haul of the season.

NT THUNDER vs CASEY DEMONS – Saturday 12pm @ TIO Traeger Stadium,
Alice Springs[LIVE VIDEO STREAM on youtube.com/territorythunder]
FORM COMING INThe Thunder (2nd, 8-2) won their third game in a row last week when they overcame Richmond by 23 points away from home. The Demons (8th, 4-5) struggled to match it with the Geelong Cats in Round 11, ultimately losing by 41 points and ending their own three-match winning streak.
KEY QUESTIONCan Casey upset NT on its home turf? While the Thunder has an almost impeccable record in their home state – with Collingwood the only side to win up north this season – the Demons have earnt three of their four wins on the road. However, NT scored over 80 points in each of their three wins in Darwin, with Casey’s highest total this year being 50. Its biggest challenge will be winning the ball against a star-studded Thunder midfield including AFLW players such as Emma Swanson and Renee Forth. This was something the Demons struggled with against the Cats last week, when they lost the disposal count 275-186.
KEY STATEbony Marinoff made her debut for NT in Round 10 and has made an immediate impact in her first two games. The Adelaide AFLW midfielder finished with 21 disposals and an imposing 18 tackles in her first match against the Darebin Falcons, before recording a match-high 28 disposals in last week’s win against Richmond.
Kristi Harvey kicked three goals for Carlton last week

MELBOURNE UNI vs COLLINGWOOD – Sunday 10.40am
@ Avalon Airport Oval[LIVE VIDEO STREAM on
vfl.com.au / WARF Radio / RSN Carnival]
FORM COMING INMelbourne Uni (11th, 3-7) celebrated its third win of the season last round, holding on for a three-point win over the Southern Saints. Collingwood (1st, 8-0-1) remained undefeated with a 17-point win over Carlton last week.
KEY QUESTIONIs Madison Prespakis primed to go at pick no.1 in the 2018 NAB AFL Women’s Draft ? Fresh off a successful NAB AFLW U18 Championships campaign when she was judged joint-MVP of the carnival alongside Vic Country’s Nina Morrison, Prespakis looked right at home for the Mugars against the Saints last week. The 18-year-old finished with a match-high 33 disposals (18 more than any of her teammates), four tackles and a goal, and looked a cut above the rest.
KEY STATPressure was a key indicator in both Melbourne Uni’s and Collingwood’s Round 11 victories. The Mugars laid 37 more tackles than the Saints, with Lauren Belza her team’s most physical in recording 11 tackles. The Magpies, meanwhile, recorded 31 more tackles than the Blues, with seven Collingwood players registering five tackles or more.
SOUTHERN SAINTS vs HAWTHORN – Saturday 11.45am
@ Trevor Barker Beach Oval
LAST ENCOUNTER2018 Rd 6 @ Box Hill City Oval: Hawthorn 6.9 (45) d Southern Saints 1.6 (12)
FORM COMING INThe Saints (7th, 4-5) couldn’t get across the line last week, losing a thrilling three-point contest against Melbourne Uni. Hawthorn (3rd, 8-1) continued their winning ways against Melbourne Uni in Round 10, narrowly beating the home side by five points before sitting out last round with a bye.
KEY QUESTIONCan the Saints be more eff ective on the scoreboard in order to challenge the Hawks? Forward-line ineff iciency proved costly for the Saints last week, with senior coach Peta Searle’s side finishing with more inside-50s than the Mugars but kicking 5.6 to 6.3. It also doesn’t bode well that they finished with 1.6 when they last played Hawthorn – and while the Hawks have produced scorelines such as 3.9 against Melbourne Uni and 5.11 against Essendon, they almost always find a way to win regardless.
KEY STATRhiannon Watt has been outstanding in the ruck for the Saints this season but has oft en battled alone, and she will again face a challenge posed by Hawthorn’s rotating ruck system. In their Round 10 win over the Mugars, it was Hawks trio Abbey Tanner (32 hitouts), Lou Wotton (14) and Tamara Luke (10) who combined to win the hitout count against lone Melbourne Uni ruck Clara Fitzpatrick (35).
Madison Prespakis found plenty of the ball for Melbourne Uni last week
