‘Aerodynamic’
Rain Gauges
XXX 2 | P a g e
*** NEWSFLASH!!! ***
The shape of your rain gauge is critical!
Here’s why: Wind accelerates up and over old-
fashioned rain gauges, causing rain to be blown
away! Improving the shape encourages wind to
blow around the instrument, improving the rainfall
measurement accuracy! Here’s scientific proof:
*Colli et al. (2017) A Computational Fluid-Dynamics assessment of the improved performance of aerodynamic rain gauges.
Water Resources Research, Conditionally accepted.
The computational fluid dynamics images show
how the air accelerates over and away from the old-
fashioned gauge causing rain ‘undercatch’, but for
the EML gauges the wind comes back down again!
But we didn’t rely only on computer models,
because at EML we believe real proof is found in
field data! So, we conducted some experiments!

reference ground-level ‘pit gauge’ measurements to
investigate the wind effect on rainfall measurement.

What happens when it gets really windy...?
The undercatch of old-fashioned gauges is up to
20% in windy conditions! EML’s aerodynamic
rain gauges are scientifically proven to be better!

What rain gauges can you get from EML?
Here’s a nice table to help you:

EML’s high-quality aerodynamic rain
gauges are used extensively by the UK
Meteorological Office and the Scottish
Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA).
Why don’t you get the best possible rainfall
measurements, too? You deserve it!
