ADVENTURES FOR LANDLUBBERS

AND SAILORS - BOOKS OF THE

SEA.

WE BEGIN THE JOURNEY!

WOMEN AND THE SEA

The Sea Captain’s Wife

by Beth Powning

The Sea Captain’s Wife is an

awe-inspiring tour that captures

the vigor of life in the last days

of the Age of Sail and gives us

an unforgettable young heroine

who shows compassion,

courage and love while under

incredible duress.

Published January 2010

Ahab’s Wife

By Sena Jeter Naslund

Ahab's Wife is a remarkable epic

spanning a rich, eventful, and

dramatic life. Inspired by a brief

passage in Moby Dick, it is the story

of Una, exiled as a child to live in a

lighthouse, removed from the

physical and emotional abuse of a

religion-mad father. It is the

romantic adventure of a young

woman setting sail in a cabin boy's

disguise to encounter darkness,

wonder, and catastrophe; the story

of a devoted wife who witnesses her

husband's destruction by obsession

and madness. Published August

2005

LINDA GREENLAW-LESSONS FROM THE SEA

AND NOW FOR SOME NON-FICTION BY JOAN DRUETT

Back in the year 1984, on the picture-poster tropical island of

Rarotonga, I literally fell into whaling history when I tumbled into a

grave. A great tree had been felled by a recent hurricane, exposing a

gravestone that had been hidden for more than one and a half

centuries. It was the memorial to a young whaling wife, who had

sailed with her husband on the New Bedford ship Harrison in the

year 1845. And so my fascination with maritime history was triggered

resulting in 18 books.

POEMS FROM THE SEA

A Life on the Ocean Wave

A life on the Ocean wave,

A home on the rolling deep,

Where the scattered waters rave,

And the winds their revels keep:

Like an eagle caged, I pine

On this dull, unchanging shore:

Oh! Give me the flashing brine,

The spray and the tempest’s roar!
