• Globalaverageairtemperaturehasincreasedandexcessiveheatwavesareontherise

• Averagesealevelhasrisen

• Flowersarebloomingearlier,lakesfreezinglater,migratorybirdsdelayingtheirflightssouth

• Thetimingandinterconnectednessofthewildfoodchainisbeingdisrupted

Climate change is disrupting natural systems Naturalsystems—suchaslakes,rivers,oceans,coralreefs,forests,grasslands—produceouroxygen,ourwater,ourfood,andprovidejobssuchascommercialfishingandtimberharvesting.Theyalsosupportoutdooractivities,generatingjobsandmillionsofdollarsinrevenue.Forests,wetlandsandothernaturallandscapeshelpsoakupgreenhousegasesthattrapheatandhavebeenscientificallylinkedtoglobalwarming.

Climate change is harming wildlife and wild placesClimatechangeisthetransformationalconservationchallengeofourtime,notonlybecauseofitsdirecteffectsonspeciesandhabitatsbutbecauseofitsinfluenceonotherstressors.Theseincludehabitatlossandfragmentation,invasivespecies,andwaterscarcity:

Thesecombinedforceshaveenormousimplicationsformanagementoffishandwildlifeandtheirhabitatsaroundtheworld:

• PolarbearpopulationdeclineshavebeennotedinCanada,aswellasextirpationsofBaycheckerspotbutterflypopulationsintheSanFranciscoBayarea

• AcrossthecontinentalU.S.,climatechangeisaffectingthemigrationcyclesandbodyconditionofmigratorysongbirds,causingdecouplingofthearrivaldatesofbirdsontheirbreedinggroundsandtheavailabilityofthefoodtheyneedforreproduction

• Evidenceisgrowingthathigherwatertemperaturesresultingfromclimatechangeareaffectingcold-andcool-waterfishpopulationsacrossthecountry

• Alongcoasts,risingsealevelshavebeguntoaffectfishandwildlifehabitats,includingthoseusedbyshorebirdsandseaturtlesthatnestoncoastalNationalWildlifeRefuges

• Intheoceans,subtropicalandtropicalcoralsinshallowwatershavealreadysufferedmajorbleachingeventsdrivenbyincreasesinseasurfacetemperatures

Climate change impacts can be reducedTheU.S.FishandWildlifeService’sstrategicplanispartnership-drivenandscience-based.We’veincorporatedinputfromemployees,partnersandthepublictobuildafive-yearplanofaction:

• Adaptation–Plannedmanagementactionstohelpreducetheimpactsofclimatechangeonfish,wildlife,andtheirhabitats.Thisincludeseffortstoworkwithotheragencies,organizations,landowners,andstakeholderstoprotectandconnectlargeintacthabitatsthatsupportmanyspecies

• Mitigation–Reducingourcarbonfootprintbyusinglessenergy,consumingfewermaterials,andappropriatelyalteringlandmanagementpractices.Thisincludescarbonsequestrationbygrowingplants,suchastreesandgrasses

• Engagement–Reachingouttothepublicandpartnerstocollectivelybuildknowledge,shareinformation,andseekcollaborativesolutionstothechallengesposedbyclimatechange

HundredsofindividualinnovationsaretakingplaceonServicelandsacrossthecountry.Theagencyisusinggreenbuildingdesignforallvisitorcentersonnationalwildliferefuges.Itisdeployinghybridvehiclesacrossthecountry.TheServiceisalsoworkingwithenergypartnersandnonprofitlandtruststosponsorcarbonsequestrationprojectsinscoresofcommunities.

You can take action now SmallchangesinoureverydaylivescanmakeabigdifferenceforcurrentandfuturegenerationsofAmericans.Hereareafewwaysyoucanhelpmitigatetheeffectsofclimatechangeandsupportwildlifeconservationwhereyoulive:

• Plantnativetreesandshrubsthatabsorbcarbondioxideandslowthespreadofinvasivespecies

• Recyclepaper,plastics,glass

• Userecycledproductsthatuselessenergytomanufacture

• Changetoenergyefficientlightbulbsandappliances

• Reducegasolineconsumption;Walkorbikewheneveryoucan
