Acadia National Park Photo Adventure
Fred Haaser October 16, 2013
Acadia National Park Facts Located in Maine next to Bar Harbor, consists of 73 square miles of which 47
square miles is on Mount Desert Island.
First seen by French navigator, cartographer, soldier, explorer, geographer, ethnologist, diplomat, and chronicler Samuel de Champlain in 1604
George Dorr (along with father Charles) supported the idea of a park, achieving a federal status in 1916 administered by the National Park Service; originally named Lafayette National Park after the Marquis but changed to Acadia NP in 1929 in honor of the former French colony of Acadia.
John D. Rockefeller Jr. financed, designed, and directed the construction of the 50 miles of gravel carriage trails throughout the park from 1915 thru 1933 (cut granite stones places along the edges act as guard rails or coping stones).
Fire of 1947 burned 10,000 acres in about a month consuming much of Maine’s forest.
Park includes mountains, ocean shoreline, woodlands, and lakes.
