Aaron and Anya’s Quilt Challenge
Aaron and Anya were exploring their grandmother’s recycle bin! Along with the
used CDs, old buttons, and wooden beads, they found a large piece of fabric.
Anya picked up the brightly colored Hawaiian print fabric, and exclaimed, “Aaron,
we can make something with this!”
“What do you have in mind, Anya?” he asked.
She stood up and twirled, wrapping the fabric around her shoulders as she
turned. “We can make a quilt with this beautiful fabric!”
“A quilt is made of squares, right?” asked Aaron.
“Right!” replied Anya. “We can ask our classmates to help make the quilt, too!”
“We’ll have to make sure there are enough fabric squares for all 25 students!”
added Aaron enthusiastically.
Anya and Aaron decided to cut the fabric into squares for the quilt. They knew
they needed at least 25 squares because there were that many students in their
homeroom.
“First, we need to figure out how much fabric we have to work with,” thought
Aaron aloud.
Anya suggested, “Maybe we could find the area of the fabric?”
“After we figure out how large to cut the squares, we can create our own
geometric designs on the quilt squares!” added Aaron.
“Let’s get started!” exclaimed Aaron.
