From the deepest layer to the most superficial, the layers of skin are:

1. Stratum Germinativum — Sometimes called the stratum basale. This layer is full of cells that "give birth" to additional skin cells (called keratinocytes, since these cells, or "cytes," produce keratin). The cells in the stratum germinativum are stem cells that are able to divide quickly to replace the dying cells at the outer edge of the skin.

2. Stratum Spinosum — This layer consists of cells that were originally "born" in the stratum germinativum, and then were pushed upwards, "out of the nest."

3. Stratum Granulosum — Named "granulosum" because these cells look grainy under the microscope. They are busy making lots and lots of keratin.  Keratin is a tough protein that helps cement all the keratinocytes together. Between making so much keratin and being at a loss for direct blood flow, they eventually die.

4. Stratum Corneum — This layer consists of dead keratinocytes pushed up from the layer below. It is full of keratin, and could be called "keratinized."

Most of the skin on the body has these four layers. But some areas have a fifth layer. As you know, the skin on the palms of the hands and bottoms of the feet is thicker and tougher. This skin, called "thick skin," has an extra layer between the stratum granulosum and stratum corneum.

5. Stratum Lucidum — A layer thick with keratin for extra wear and tear. It's found between the stratum granulosum and stratum corneum.
