Breakthrough in LNG logisticsINOX recently partnered with BPCL andcarmaker GM to develop LNG facility at theHalol car manufacturing plant. INOX offeredcomplete logistic solution includingstorage, transport and re-gasification of LNG from BPCL'sLNG terminal at Dahej Port to GM'sHalol plant. Using cryogenic storageand distribution solutions fromINOX India, LNG is loaded on 7-tonLNG Trucks that transport it toindustries in regions that do nothave access to piped-LNG. At theHalol plant, there is a state of theart automated facility for storage inlarge tanks and unmanned re-gasification unitto use LNG for industrial purposes like paintbaking, air conditioning and process fluidheating. In accordance with international safetystandards and GM's safety policy the INOX hasarmed the LNG facility with advanced remoteoperation facility, anon-site control roomand fire-fightingequipment. There isan automatedemergency shutdowndevice that getsactivated if a gas leakor spillage is detectedby sensors. A spillconfinement area hasalso been designed tocorner any leakage.Terming this as astepping-stone togreater achievements,Parag Kulkarni,

fueling wars between countries. The other end ofthe spectrum offers a utopia of renewable energysources in Solar, Wind, Hydro and Geo-thermalenergy, which are infinite and clean in usage.However, the current technological constraints donot allow us to generate and utilize a sustainableand efficient amount that can supportuninterrupted industrial usage. Caught in a limbo,the current generation is walking a tightrope ofusing a combination of both energy sources.

From Earth’s core to your doorThe gas is extracted from sub-surface and

stored as compressed natural gas. To enable large-scale transport of natural gas, it is condensed attemperatures below 150C, where the gas achievesa liquefied stage. Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) cannow be shipped to different countries in specialshipping vessels, received at LNG ports that havecapability of unloading , storage and distribution

of fuel. LNG can be then fed to the nationalpipeline distribution network or be loaded inspecial vacuum insulated container trucks that canferry upto 7 tons of LNG to industrial sites that arein remote parts of the county not having access topiped gas. At the site the gas can be stored inspecial tanks and after passing it through a re-gasification unit, the gas can be used for industrialapplications.

Clean and Cost-effectiveAs opposed to conventional petrol, fuel oil anddiesel, LNG doesn’t emit suspended particle orsulphur in the atmosphere. Hence it is a clean andgreen source of energy, helping industries to meetmodern fuel emission norms and earn carboncredits by switching over to LNG-poweredfacilities. Parag Kulkarni, Director and CEO INOXIndia Ltd says, “LNG prices have remained stablefor decades, unlike Oil prices per barrel. Withcheap extraction at shale reserves, LNG prices areno longer linked to Oil and are expected to remaincost-effective, as the current reserves are enoughto satiate the demand. For industries, switchingover to LNG can offer monetary savings of upto Rs10/kg or a total saving of 35% on fuel costs”.Having acquired CVA, USA, INOX India has got aheadstart in mastering different equipments andtechnologies to reduce the extraction cost ofNatural Gas from shale reserves.

Safe Energy sourceIn comparison to contemporary hydrocarbons,LNG is prone to lesser flammable hazards. CNG islighter than air and hence in a scenario of gasleakage or spillage, the gas shall rise up inatmosphere and get dispersed. LNG, beingextremely cold takes time to convert into gaseousstage. LNG handling facilities can have a spillconfinement area that can segregate spilled LNGto a location where it can be sequestered.

Fuel for FutureAs LNG is adopted across industrial and domesticplatforms for multiple applications, it cansignificantly reduce India’s fuel dependency andoverseas fuel import costs. Natural gas reserveshave been detected in India and can be helpful inproviding sustainable energy solution.Incorporating LCNG systems and mobile filling

stations can enhance availability of LNG. Indianshipping industry, particularly domestic mineralore barges plying in canals and rivers, can reducediesel dependency by shifting to LNG poweredengines. INOX is powering India’s Space Agedreams by assisting ISRO with its range of spacesimulation systems, cryo-stage ground testing forSLV, GN2 based satellite cooling system, coldboxand vacuum systems etc.
