WINE IN GREECE
Wine has been an important part of Greek culture for over
4000 years as the numerous archaeological discoveries
throughout Greece indicate. The ancient Greeks knew well
the nutritional value of wine as it became an inseparable
part of their daily regimen.
Greek wine industry consists of a large number of firms,
different in size and contribution to the sector.
The EU recognizes two quality marks for Protected
Designation of Origin (PDO) and Protected Designation of
Indication (PGI).
Legal Framework
• Wine Tourism is the special form of tourism that refers to the provision
of visitation, touring, hospitality and catering services on the premises
of the wineries, in areas that are functionally integrated with
winemaking and / or wine-growing facilities (vineyards). These services
are offered in conjunction with activities related to viniculture and wine
production.(Law 4276/2014 )
• According to Law 3233/2018 introduced the legal framework of the
technical, functional and specific provisions of the premises of a winery
or vineyard operation.
Label Open Wineries
The establishment of the Special Wine Visitor Label is an important step in strengthening the brand of Greece and positioning it on the international map as a competitive wine tourism destination.

Wine tourism in Northern Greece
• Wine tourism in Northern Greece is clearly much more organized and that is due to the Wines of North Greece organization, which has designed the Wine Roads of Northern Greece.
• In Greece, the first organized wine roads were outlined in 1997 by the Wine Producers Association of the Northern Greece Vineyard and given the official name “Wine Roads of Northern Greece.”
