IT’S ALL ELEMENTALElements are all around us … can you recognize them when you see

them?

What is an element?

An element is a pure substance that cannot be broken down by chemical means into other substances.

A compound contains two or more elements

. Everything is made up of elements.

What element is this?

Copper –Cu

Used in: wiring heat sinks Coins brass and bronze

alloys (metal mixtures).

But is it really Copper? Lincoln Memorial penny

dated before 1982 - made of 95% copper.

dated after 1983 - made of 97.5% zinc and plated with a thin copper coating.

Nickel –Ni

classified as an element in 1751.
