Mower MaintenanceF
Another mowing season in the books.Another long winter break from trimming, clipping and cutting.
But before you store your mower in theshed, there are some simple steps to take tomake sure your equipment will be ready togo when the springtime season makes itsrounds again.
Drain the TankLeaving your mower’s tank full over the
winter can lead to bad gas that can slowdown your performance or even harm yourengine when it’s time to mow again.
Luckily, draining your tank is one of thesimplest forms of preventive maintenanceyou can perform. Syphoning or funneling gasout of a mower can be awkward and messy.
Take a few more passes around your yarduntil your mower runs out of gas, then storeyour mower away for the winter.
Other DIY TipsMower maintenance does not have be
complicated. There are many simple stepsyou can take to keep your machine runninglong and strong.
With your engine off, use a plastic scraperto remove all of the grass clippings andmatted grass from underneath your mower’sdeck and blades.
Changing your spark plugs yearly is also asimple, quick way to ensure optimumperformance. Also requiring annual care isyour engine’s oil, which should be changed ateither the end or beginning of every mowingseason.
Consult your mower’s product guidelinesfor any steps that may be specific to yourmake and model.
Take it to the ShopNot all of us are comfortable with taking
on maintenance projects without the help ofprofessionals, preferring to seek out theadvice of local experts.
Many people take their mowers to repairshops during the spring when the lines arelonger and the rates are higher.
By visiting your local shop during the fallor winter, you can save some time andmoney from professionals who are usuallywilling to offer an off-season deal on theirservices.

or some – especially those with large yards – putting the lawnmower away forthe winter is accompanied with feelings of relief and accomplishment.
FALL HOME SECTION I 2014
Homeowners about toembark on homeimprovement projectsshould prioritize dustremoval to avoid thepotentially negative sideeffects of exposure tolead dust. When undergoing a renovation, homes builtbefore 1978, the year the use of lead paintwas banned, are likely to produce lead dust, which occurs when lead paint is sanded orchipped. That dust can be especially harmfulto children, pregnant women and pets.According to the Centers for Disease Controland Prevention, lead dust that is as small asa grain of sand is enough to poison children, who may suffer brain damage, hearing loss, nervous system and kidney damage, anddecreased muscle and bone growth afterexposure to lead dust. When pregnantwomen are exposed to lead dust, thatexposure may affect the baby's cognitivedevelopment while increasing the mother'sblood pressure. Household pets exposed tolead dust may suffer from a series of sideeffects, including vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain and possibly death. Whenmaking renovations to their homes, homeowners can open windows and wearprotective gear such as masks and safetygoggles to avoid direct exposure to lead dust.
Did youknow?
Why do we continue to let stuff pile up? Is itour inability to let go of the past? Ouremotional connection to even the minutest
of items? No matter your excuse, there are plenty
of ways you can de-clutter your life even ifyou refuse to let go.
It might take more than a weekend, butsimple steps can make a big difference onthe overall space that is being taken up byunnecessary items or clothing.
Use the Walls
If you have a room with a full floor andbare walls, consider a transformation.Certain items – especially guitars andchildren’s artwork – can serve as great-looking additions to any blank wall as wellas a major space saver.
Install and fill up some basic shelvingunits on your wall, and watch your floorclean up in a hurry. Shelves are perfect forlaundry rooms, workshops, bathrooms, bedrooms, and garages.
Swap Out Your Clothing
As the weather cools, free up somecloset and dresser space by swapping outyour tank tops for flannels.
Sort through your items to determinewhat can stay through the fall and wintermonths and what can be neatly tucked intototes.
Also consider donating your closet ofextra clothing to a good cause like a localcharity, thrift shop or ministerial alliance.
Go Digital
Are bulky VHS tapes and CDs taking toomuch space in your living room orentertainment den? It might be time for youto go digital.
There are many converters available onthe market to transfer VHS files into DVDformat, which will help rid you of thosespace-eating VHS tapes.
Download all of your CDs onto yourcomputer and save them into easy-to-navigate folders for streamlined storage.
Transfer your songs over to your MP3player, and just like that you have solved oneof your storage dilemmas.

(StatePoint) A beautiful lawn is importantfor a lovely home, but when those autumnleaves begin to fall, some extra effort isrequired to keep things picture perfect. Thisonce meant firing up noisy machinery andpiling up bag after bag of yard waste. Nowthat we live in more environmentally-conscientious times, this might not seemlike such a responsible idea.
Doing things by hand doesn’t have tolead to a sore back. Learning some helpfulhints can make your lawn really stand outthis year and help you get the job done in abreeze.Spring is when the lawn and garden
really come into full bloom, but fall is whenplants are storing energy and nutrients tohave ready when the season turns. Like anathlete training in the offseason, get a stepup on the competition by building a goodfoundation. Now’s the time to fertilize andaerate since roots keep growing and storingenergy even when above-ground growthslows during the colder months. Don’tforget to keep watering too!Weeding can be made less painful if you
adhere to the old gardener’s trick ofcompleting this task after it rains. When theearth is dry, it’s harder to pull out the wholeweed without breaking off the top. Afterrainfall, the ground is soft, making it easierto pluck out entire weeds. They can easilybe added to leaves and other debris thatneeds to be hauled away.Leaves can smother your lawn if enough
of them build up, preventing sunlight fromreaching the grass and increasing thechances of lawn disease. Collecting theleaves in bags allows your lawn to breatheand receive proper sunlight. The average cost to remove leaves is
$374. There are easy DIY methods that cansave you money. To make your life easierand get the job done faster, consider usingtools such as the EZ Leaf Hauler, whichacts like a giant dustpan for leaves, and is acost-effective, green alternative.
Reduce waste by packing more leavesinto every bag with tools like the EZ LeafStomper or using leaves and yard debris formulch or compost.Good posture can also prevent
backaches when raking leaves. Keep yourhead up and back straight. Relieve backpressure by raking in the “scissors” stance:placing one foot forward and the other backand reversing position when comfortable.Another option is to haul tarps by using pullhandles like EZ Tarp Tugger.
Opt for ergonomically designed rakes, shears and pruners that require less handstrength and provide a comfortable non-slipgrip to help prevent muscle soreness. Moreinformation on innovative tools for raking, hauling and bagging yard waste can befound at www.ezlawnandgarden.comGet a head start on home improvement
this fall with smart lawn and garden care.Grab the kids and get the clippers, rake ‘emin and bag ‘em up.

(StatePoint) The “connected home” isone of the biggest areas of technicalinnovation today, with smart appliances, learning thermostats, app-driven lights, andintelligent door locks taking center stage inhome improvement stores and magazines. In fact, by 2017, an estimated 36 millionhomes throughout North America andEurope will be smart.
For some consumers, the concept of a“smart home” can be overwhelming. Hereare a few things to keep in mind:
The BasicsHome automation gives you remote and
automatic control of a wide array of devicesin your home -- it’s ideal for convenience andcontrol, and some devices can help withmoney savings. Home automation can alsoalert you to events that you might want toknow about while you’re gone, like leaks, kids arriving home or security breaches.
For your furry family member, your smarthome can distribute pre-determinedamounts of food on a schedule so you don’thave to worry about your pet missing dinnerwhile you’re stuck in traffic.
Is it Right for Your Home? Not everyone is in a place to install a full
home automation system -- literally andfinancially, as apartment living, renting, lowcash flow, expensive installation fees andadvanced technical set-up can all belimitations.
However, with stand-alone homeautomation devices and apps, you can makeyour home smart without integrating awhole-home automation network. Forexample, smart locks, lighting, irons, coffeemakers, security cameras and refrigeratorscan all be controlled by smartphoneswithout the need for a fully integratedsystem.
First Things FirstIn a recent analyst report from
NextMarket, the smart lock market will growto $3.6 billion worldwide by 2019. Withsecurity and access control leading smarthome product adoption, a logical place tostart is at your front door. Consider tryingKwikset Kevo, powered by UniKey, whichwas the first smart lock on the market. Itmakes it possible to open the door by simplytouching the deadbolt -- without removingyour smartphone from your purse or pocket.
Via the Kevo app, users can grant andrevoke access to the house electronically, view a lock history and get notified whensomeone locks or unlocks the door without
connecting to the home network or a powersource. Available at many major retailers, itinstalls easily, within a few minutes, with justa Phillips head screwdriver, making it anexcellent example of how one product canusher your home into the era of automation.
From there it’s easy to move on to takesmarter control of your home appliances andlighting, and you can make as many or asfew changes as your budget and imaginationallow.
Smart home solutions are granting
homeowners access to information andfeatures that were previously unavailable.Bottom line: you don’t have to be rich orhave a fully-connected home to enjoy thebenefits. If you’re considering getting onboard the trend, do your research and findthe best technology and products for you.

FALL HOME SECTION I 2014
This is especially true for residents inurban areas who typically have smaller livingspaces. And urban living is on the rise. As of2010, more than half of all people lived in anurban area, and by 2030 it is anticipated thatsix out of every 10 people will be living in acity, according to the World HealthOrganization. But less space doesn’t mean that you have
to go without, say experts.“A few simple adjustments can help you
maintain your comfort in a small home,” saysRobin Wilson, celebrity interior designer withexpertise in creating healthy spaces. There are plenty of ways to “open up” your
living spaces to create more room.
The Living Room
Choose furniture for a small living roomthat is appropriate for the space. Forexample, avoid sofas with skirts and selectcouches which are raised off the floor tocreate a more open look.A large, strategically placed mirror can also
help create the illusion that your living roomis actually much larger than it is. The samegoes for lack of clutter. Be sure to keep asmall space organized with a daily once-over.
Storage
Living simply can go a long way towardmaking your home feel larger. Every season,go through your closet and toss aside itemsthat are worn out, no longer fit, or are out ofstyle.Use creative storage solutions to make
more space. For example, an ottoman thatdoubles as a trunk is a great place to storeold photos and keepsakes. A bike rack thatmounts to the wall can clear valuable floorspace in your foyer.
The Kitchen
The kitchen is often the heart of the home, particularly if you like entertaining or love tocook. Unfortunately, kitchens can getovercrowded quickly by excessive gadgetry.“If counter space is at a premium, consider
highly functional appliances that havemultiple uses,” says Wilson. For example, the Panasonic Genius NN-
SD681S microwave is equipped with invertertechnology, which gives this kitchen essentialthe ability to function like an oven andensures every dish is cooked evenlythroughout. Though it is compact in size, itstill maintains a spacious interior and comeswith an optional trim kit that easily convertsthis microwave to a built-in, freeing upcounter space while giving a stylish accent tocabinetry. More information can be found atwww.Panasonic.com.
The Bathroom
Give the illusion of space by decoratingwith pale or pastel colors on the walls andfloor. Avoid using bolder colors, except ontowels and ornamental pieces
Throughout the Home
Ensure that you have lighting at floor, tableand eye level to help limit shadows. Anothertrick is to use a tall lamp to draw eyesupwards and add height to the room.A small home is no excuse for feeling
cramped. With a few interior designstrategies in place, you can make even thesmallest space feel larger in size.

FALL HOME SECTION I 2014
With winter on the horizon, homeownerswho live in locales with harsh winters arepreparing their homes for a season spentlargely indoors. Unlike the other seasons ofthe year, when homeowners can comfortablyair out their homes by opening windows,
winter offers no such opportunities to letnature improve indoor air quality.
Such a reality can make a homeuncomfortable as winter drags on. But thatdiscomfort pales in comparison to the healthrisks presented by poor indoor air quality.
Radon, volatile chemicals from fragrancesused in conventional cleaners and lead fromhouse dust are just a few of the manysources of indoor air pollution commonlyfound in homes, and these pollutants can beespecially harmful in winter, when manypeople spend more time indoors thanks toharsh weather. But while you might not beable to change the weather so you can openwindows in the wintertime, you can takesteps to improve indoor air quality in yourhome.
• Clean the floors regularly. Dirty floorstake their toll on a home's indoor air quality.Dust that's allowed to settle on floors maycontain harmful chemicals and allergens thatcan lead to respiratory problems andadditional uncomfortable health conditions.Clean your floors at least once per weekduring the winter months, ideally with avacuum that's equipped with a HEPA filter. The HEPA filter is important because it canprevent dust and dirt from being blown backout of the vacuum in the exhaust. After youhave vacuumed, mop the floors as well, aseven the most effective vacuums leavepotentially harmful dust particles behind. Aonce-over with a mop and some hot watercan remove any lingering dust left behind bythe vacuum.
• Place a floor mat near every entrance.Winter is a messy season, and it's easy tobring in the great outdoors when you enteryour home during cold weather seasons. Dirtthat sticks to your shoes may containpotentially harmful chemicals, so place a floormat near any door where people routinelyenter your home and politely ask that all whoenter wipe off and remove their shoes beforemoving about the house.
• Dehumidify your home. Mold and dustmites thrive on moisture, so homeownersconcerned about the moisture in their homesduring the winter months can purchase adehumidifier to control allergens and reducemoisture in the air. In addition to using adehumidifier, you can control humidity in yourhome by using an exhaust fan when cooking, addressing leaky plumbing fixtures to preventmold growth and making sure your clothesdryer is vented to the outside of your home.
• Choose naturally scented laundryproducts. Everyone wants their freshly
cleaned clothes to smell good, but the priceyou pay when using laundry products thatemploy synthetic fragrances may be far moresteep than you realize. Such syntheticfragrances emit dozens of chemicals into theair, so choose naturally scented detergents, fabric softeners and dryer sheets whenpossible.
• Avoid plug-in air fresheners. Unlessotherwise noted on the packaging, plug-in airfresheners likely contain volatile organiccompounds, or VOCs, which contain avariety of chemicals that can negativelyimpact both short and long-term health.Instead of plugging in an air freshener toimprove a home's interior aroma, slice freshlemons and leave them out in the kitchen andkeep fresh indoor plants in living areas.Studies from NASA have shown that indoorplants naturally purify indoor air by absorbingmaterials released by synthetic materials.
As winter gets set to return, homeownerscan employ several simple strategies toimprove indoor air quality in their homes.

223 E. Allegan Street(M89) • Box 443Otsego, MI 49078
“THE GREAT COMMISSION”“Go, therefore and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of theSon and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them toobey everything I have commanded you...” –
Matthew 28: 19,20Shortly before He left this earth Jesus gave a great
commission. They were among His last words to theoriginal disciples. The commission is for the ages. Here is how it breaks down:1. A GREAT MESSAGE – God’s LoveJesus said that love is the greatest commandment.Inasmuch as we love others as Christ loves us, it canbe said we are obeying Him. Inasmuch as we loveourselves (healthy self-esteem), it can be said we areobeying Him.2. A GREAT MESSENGER – Jesus ChristJesus is the message and the messenger wrapped inone person. “The Word became flesh and dweltamong us.” (John l: l4).3. A GREAT MANDATE – “Go, make disciples …” The mandate is for all generations. Years ago a Post Office was dedicated in a large
city in Pennsylvania. State and local dignitaries werepresent along with a marching band and a large crowdof people. But when they went to mail the ceremonialletter in the mail box, they discovered a surprisingmistake. The postal box did not have a place to dropthe mail inside the box!As a mailbox is made for collecting mail and
sending it forward, the church exists for sending God’slove here and throughout the world. Let us not makethe Great Commission our great omission.Let us share the message, the Messenger and the
mandate to the world!Prayer: Lord, help us to spread your love to everyone. In Jesus’ name. Amen.Peace to you and please join us for worship thisSunday in a church where Jesus’ love is lived.

“Krazy for the Kazoo”Community Event
Celebrates ConservationVolunteer Saturday, October 4th atthe Kalamazoo River Cleanup Event
Local municipalities and theKalamazoo River Watershed Council areinviting community members of all agesto celebrate the Kalamazoo River byvolunteering in a river cleanup andconservation day event. This is anopportunity for residents and others wholove our river to have fun whilesupporting this valuable natural resource.Volunteers can help keep the river cleanby signing up to clean a riverside park orremove trash from a stream.
This watershed-wide event, calledKrazy for the Kazoo, will take place onSaturday, October 4, 2014, at sevendifferent locations. In Allegan County, volunteers should meet at Fannie PellPark in Plainwell or the OtsegoHistorical Museum in Otsego at 9:00 amor the Allegan County Fairgrounds at9:30 am. More information can be foundat www.kalamazooriver.org. Contact the
local host for more information abouteach site. Pre-registration is encouraged, but not required. Trash bags, gloves, andtools will be provided. Refreshments willbe served and all participants will receivea free Krazy for the Kazoo t-shirt.
Krazy for the Kazoo builds onmultiple successful river cleanupsorganized by communities in the regionfor the past 12 years. This year, morecommunities and volunteers are workingtogether on the same day to promotegood stewardship of the KalamazooRiver. The event is meant to helppromote stewardship and improve waterquality of the river.
The health of the Kalamazoo River isimpacted by pollution from humanactivities on land and in the water.Stormwater from cities and runoff fromagriculture wash nutrients and sedimentinto streams, lakes, and rivers. This canlead to unsightly algae, poor fishing, andunpleasant beaches.
Help be a part of the solution andprotect our community natural resourcesby volunteering at one of the Krazy forthe Kazoo cleanup events this fall.
