Canyonlands Field Institute provides quality outdoor education on the Colorado Plateau, to inspire care of

wild places and renew the human spirit.

Located in beautiful Professor Valley twenty miles from Moab and Arches National Park. Our field camp is minutes from the

Colorado River.

Professor Valley Field Camp:

A home-base for day hikes and field

activities. Complete with tipis and cots for sleeping, classroom

space in our yurt, and outdoor kitchen.

Our Instructors:Skilled and experienced Naturalist Guides. Energetic, enthusiastic, and fun to be with. Great role models for kids!

Our Curriculum:Hands-on activities with an emphasis on soils, geology, water, plants, animals, and human relationships to the land.

During their adventure on the river, students examine the geology, hydrology, and ecology of the river canyon.

Standards Focus● 8.3.3

Ask questions to obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about how changes to an ecosystem affect the stability of cycling matter and the flow of energy among living and nonliving parts of an ecosystem. Emphasize describing the cycling of matter and flow of energy through the carbon cycle.

● 8.4.3

Design a solution to monitor or mitigate the potential effects of the use of natural resources. Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well each solution meets the criteria and constraints of the problem. Examples of uses of the natural environment could include agriculture, conservation efforts, recreation, solar energy, and water management.

● Students will reflect on their learning through journaling, art and discussion.

Students Staying at Channing● Will complete assignments mirroring the learning and

activities of those attending the field experience.● Lab based, hands on activities tied to the same

standards and outcomes.● Cross curricular activities will focus on the culture,

literature and art of the indigenous people of Professor Valley and the surrounding area.

Schedule● Wednesday the 9th

○ 8:15am - Channing Hall, Organize/Embark○ 3pm - Arrive, Welcome, Dinner, Night Sky

Program● Thursday the 10th

○ Breakfast, Creek Nature Activities, Lunch, Service Project, Dinner, Campfire Program

● Friday the 11th○ Breakfast, Colorado River Trip with lunch,

depart from River about 3pm.○ Return Home Approx 8pm

Cost

● $480.00● Pays for transportation, food, lodging,

activities, and supervision.● $100.00 deposit - Still accepting new students● Balance due by 9/1/2019 and this is the last

day for any changes.
