Homework• Homework that is assigned will

have at least 2 days to be completed. For example, an assignment given on Monday will be due on Wednesday (at the earliest).

• There will be a 10 point deduction for each day that work is turned in late.

CanvasCanvas will be used by fifth grade students to access their homework, assignment calendar, and helpful links. Students may access it through My Katy Cloud:http://www.katyisd.org/sites/portalel/Pages/default.aspx

Bring Your Own Device• Students are encouraged to bring their own electronic

devices to school

• Teachers will inform the students how the devices will be used each day

• Possible uses for the devices are:• Reading• Research• Enrichment activities• Assessment

*It would be helpful for students to have their own ear buds.

• The math textbook is consumable. Students will be taking pages out for classwork and homework, but will leave the book at school.

• The textbook has online resources that will are available to the students from home. You can access the textbook from My Katy Cloud.

• Concepts covered in 5th grade:• Place value, addition, and subtraction of decimals• multiplication and division• personal financial literacy• geometry• fractions

• Word Study in 5th grade will pick up where it left off in 4th. We will teach common root words as well as all of the common prefixes and suffixes.

• There will be a word study assessment every 5 weeks.

• The Word Study grade is incorporated into Language Arts.

• 5th graders will be using the Reader’s Workshop format to broaden their reading experience and work on specific reading skills. It is vital that your students bring a self-selected novel to reading class daily. We will use this these to practice what we learn in class.

• During writing workshop, students will use writing to organize, learn, influence, express, inform, and entertain. We will incorporate technology, a variety of paper formats, and the students’ areas of interest to create writing pieces.

Grading•Major Grades – 45%

• Tests, Projects•Students will be offered a reteach opportunity (that is mandatory

to be eligible for retest) and a retest opportunity which will be communicated to parents and students by teachers.

•Minor Grades – 40%• Labs, Daily Work

•Other Grades – 15%• Homework
