Balance before the bounce
While stabilizing himself on the board, Max Jenkins (12)
prepares to complete a back dive. He has been competing in diving
competitions for eight years. “When it comes down to it, you have to shut your mind off and
let your body take over,”Jenkins said.
pre-game prep
After arriving at Steinbrenner High School, Elliot Cash (9) and Dani
sleet (9) immediately begin to warm up. The team stretched in order to
reduce their chance of injury during the game. “Stretching is just one
small detail that can heavily influence your performance on the court,”
Cash said.
Huddled around each other, Cameryn
Porter (10) and Ava Friar (7) whisper strategies to use against the opposing team. Before each game and after each point, the players repeated this process.“We have a very close-knit team, and we come together after every point to motivate each other. This prevents people from getting down on themselves if they make a mistake,” Kristen Sibson (10) said.
As Jade Starkey (10) runs by with the rest of the junior varsity girls, the
varsity team cheers and high-fives her. Throughout the season JV and
varsity players went to each other’s games to support one another. “The
varsity team cheers us on at our games and pushes us to be better
players by working hard and playing at a higher level,” Starkey said.
Before the game, the junior varsity volleyball team gathers together to shout their motivating chant. The girls all beat their hands on the ground in a certain rhythm while chanting ‘P-H-S.’ “We do a big cheer before the games that gets me really excited to play. I think it gives us a competitive fire and helps us get pumped up to play,” Katie Pine (10) said.
take me outBracE the wind
While running their drill, Erica Brown (11) and Nikki Smalley (11) weave across the bay. After finishing the drills, they discussed strategies for their next race. “We were checking the wind and it favored one part of the line so we prepared for the wind and then started the race,” Brown said.
Regatta routine
Before receiving instruction from his coach, Charlie Curtis (11) luffs his sail. He completed several drills before ending the night with a practice regatta. “When I’m on the boat, I take into account the way the wind is oscillating across the course before practicing a drill or racing,” Curtis said.
That’s a wrap
After finishing his practice, Dominic Canonico (9) rolls
the sail tightly and places it in the shed. He spent his time during practice learning skills
to help his performance in the regatta. “Sailing is fun
and a good sport that helps you get involved in the area,”
Canonico said.

Freshman Flippin’
As she counts her spins, Jilian Schulte (9)
reaches two complete rotations before touching the water. As the only freshman on the team, she finished her newest dive with a score she was proud of. “All of the older divers are really nice and can help me with anything. They are good divers to learn from. I don’t really mind being the only freshman on the team at all,” Schulte said.
Ten divers stood pressed side by side, bare feet bouncing on hot pavement, awaiting their turn on the board. Palm trees shaded the three judges sat adjacent to the diving board, flashing scores ranging from one to 10. As sunset approached, screams of encouragement from parents and coaches filled everyone’s ears, while spectators watched from the opposite bleachers. Six of the divers—Dylan Power (12), Max Jenkins (12), Bella Guggino (11), Simone Burgin (11), Mac mckelvin (11) and Jilian Schulte (9)—all used the same one-meter springboard for their dives. “It was tough competition against two schools but I stuck it out and won first place for the girls,” Guggino said. Normally these competitions are held during swim meets, but the divers only had each other while the swim team competed at Academy. “The meet was great practice for districts. It’s always fun having all the divers together, especially since we practiced with Academy and Jesuit. Who needs the swimmers anyway?” Burgin said. The divers utilized the meet as practice for future competitions. “This meet was extra practice for me to improve my dives before the state competition that I hope to also receive first at,” Power said, who took first among male divers.

Instantly after her jump, Bella Guggino (11) tucks into an inward dive. During the season, she placed first against female divers at every local competition. “The inward dive was my best and favorite dive of this meet,” Guggino said.

Lean back
While arching into a back flip, Mac Mckelvin (11) extends his arms and tightens his muscles. His score strengthened the boys’ 15-point win against Jesuit. “During that dive I really have to focus on the kick so I don’t smack the water,” McKelvin said.
