1. WHAT IS ENERGY?

1. WHAT IS ENERGY?

Energy is the ability to do work

There are many types of energy

Without an energy source, we can’tdo any work

2. ENERGY TYPES and ENERGY SOURCES

Energy types son los distintos tipos de energía que existen y que podemos experimentar

Energy sources: son las fuentes naturales de las que podemos extraer los distintos tipos de energía

3. TYPES OF ENERGY

There are seven types of energy

1. Nuclear: from the atom’s nuclei

2. Chemical: from chemical reactions

3. Electric: from the electrons

4. Heat: from high temperatures

5. Light: from electromagnetic radiation

6. Kinetic: from things in motion

7. Potential: from the gravity

3. TYPES OF ENERGY

CONSERVATION OF ENERGY PRINCIPLE

ENERGY CAN’T BE CREATED.

ENERGY CAN’T BE DESTROYED.

ENERGY CAN ONLY BE

TRANSFORMED

3. ACTIVITY1. Battery: it transforms chemichal energy into

electric energy2. Light bulb:3. Solar cell:4. A car:5. A person working:6. An electric fan:7. A gas oven: 8. A Computer screen:

Write down what type of electric transformation

takes place in these devices.

4. ENERGY IN TECHNOLOGY

All the machines need energy to work.

In technology, the most useful type of energy is electric energy, for threereasons:1.Electricity is easy to generate

2.Electricity is easy to transform

3.Electricity is easy to transport

4. ELECTRICITY IS EASY TO GENERATE

4. ELECTRICITY IS EASY TO TRANSFORM

4. ELECTRICITY IS EASY TO TRANSPORT

5. ENERGY SOURCES

Energy Sources can be renewable ornon-renewable.

RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES

These energies come from the nature

We can assume that they will exist forever

Renewable energies are good for the environment, don’t pollute and never run out.

Renewable energies are: …………

NON-RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES

These energies come from limitedresources

We know that these energies are going torun out

Non-renewable energies are bad for theenvironment, pollute, and will not lastforever.

Non-renewable energies are: ……………

THE ENERGY PROBLEM

80% of our energy consumption comes from non-renewable sources

We use fossil fuels for electricity and transportation (cars, ships, aeroplanes, …)

ACTIVITY: Write down threeconsequences if tomorrow we didn’t haveany electricity at all.

THE ENERGY PROBLEM

Nor the Canary Islands, nor Spain havefossil fuels

We have to buy the fuel to foreigncountries. This causes two problems:

1. We have to pay any price for it.

2. We depend on the other country to get thefuel.
