§1910.95 Occupational Noise Exposure

§1910.95(a) - (o) Occupational Noise Exposure

(a) Protection against the effects of noise exposure

§ 1910.95 (b)(1) & (2)

Table G-16 – Permissible Noise Exposure

Table: OSHA §1910.95

• Exceeding limits requires

1. Administrative Controls

2. Engineering Controls

• If 1 and / or 2 do not reduce to

allowable levels,

• then 3, PPE shall be provided

& used to reduce levels to

within allowable levels in the

Table

§1910.95 (d)(e)(f) Monitoring / ‘ee Notification / Monitoring observations

(d) Monitoring equal or exceed 85 dBA over an 8hr. TWA:

(1) Development & Implement monitoring program

(2) Repeat monitoring

(e) Inform exposed ‘ees

(f) Allow ‘ees / rep. to observe monitoring if they wish

(g)(1) Audiometric Testing Program

No cost to ‘ee

Baseline

Annual & Evaluation Compare to Baseline

Follow-up

Baseline Revising

Standard Threshold Shift

(h) Requirements

500 – 6000 Hz

Specs – American National Standard

Specification for Audiometers

Instruments – Appendix C

Note: Do yourself a favor; conduct baseline audiograms for all new employees

§1910.95 (g)(h) Audiometric Testing Program / Requirements

§1910.95 (i)(j) Hearing Protectors

(i) Hearing Protectors

Make available to ‘ees exposed to 85 dBA over 8 hr. TWA

‘Er ensure protectors are worn

Worn by ‘ee exposed but has not had baseline audiogram

Worn by ‘ee that has experienced a threshold shift

‘Ee has opportunity to select from a variety provided by ‘er

Provide training in use & care of protectors

‘Er has to ensure proper initial fitting & supervise correct use

(j) Hearing Protection Attenuation (“Er responsibility)

Evaluation of protectors (Appendix B)

Must attenuate to at least 90 dBA

Must attenuate to at least 85 dBA or below for ‘ee that had experienced a threshold shift

Re-evaluate whenever the adequacy no longer provides adequate attenuation

§1910.95 (i)(j) Hearing Protectors / with Radios……

Depends on your company’s policy & how your program is written.

§1910.95 (k)(l) Training

(k) Training Program

Dev. / implement program for those exposed to noise level at or above 85 dBA over 8hr. TWA

Ensure participation

Repeated annually for ‘ees in the hearing conservation program

1. Effects of noise on hearing

2. Purpose of protectors, advantages, attenuation types, selection, fitting, use & care

3. Purpose of audiometric testing & explanation of test procedures

(l) Information access & training materials Make available to affected ‘ees / representative copy of §1910.95 & post in workplace

Provide informational materials provided by OSHA

Upon request, all materials related to ‘er training & education program

§1910.95 (m)(n)(o) Recordkeeping

(m) Recordkeeping

Exposure measurements

Audiometric Tests

Name & classification of ‘ee, audiogram date, examiner’s name, date of

equipment calibration, ‘ees most recent noise exposure assessment, &

background sound pressure levels in audiometric test rooms

Record retention

Noise exposure measurement records – 2 years

‘Ee audiometric test – duration of affected ‘ee employment
