Heartland Community College Class of 2020 - 2021

Distinquished Alum Dr. Justin Rickard

Dr. Justin Rickard was

raised in Heyworth,

Illinois where his family

raises Angus cattle and

operates a business

that constructs and

repairs commercial

grain elevators. His

academic career started at Heartland Community College,

which prepared him to transfer to the Department of

Agriculture at Illinois State University. At ISU he earned a

bachelor’s degree in Animal Industry Management and a

master’s degree in Agriculture Sciences. Dr. Rickard is also

a graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia where he

earned a Ph.D. in Animal Science with an emphasis in Fresh

Meat Science. He returned to the Department of Agriculture

at ISU following his Ph.D. where he is currently an Associate

Professor of Animal Science with a teaching and research

appointment. Dr. Rickard teaches a variety of animal

science and food industry courses. His research focuses

on improving the livestock production and food animal

industries. In addition to teaching and research, he advises

undergraduate and graduate students and does a variety of

outreach activities with livestock producers and 4H and

FFA programs.

Outstanding FacultyHeather Chapman

Heather Chapman is

an Associate Professor

of Economics at

Heartland Community

College. She received

her MA in Economics

from Eastern Illinois

University. Chapman

is a student-focused professor whose goal is to help

her students see the world through the viewpoint of an

economist. She has presented her teaching techniques at

many conferences; including conferences hosted by the

Federal Reserve Banking System, Inquiry-Based Learning

& Teaching in Mathematics, and the International Institute

on Teaching & Learning. Chapman uses all open source and

free resources for her courses. One of her priorities is to

make college as affordable as possible by finding high quality

openly-sourced materials for her courses or creating those

materials when needed. Chapman served as Heartland’s

Assessment Committee Chair from Fall 2018 to Spring

2019. She has also served on other important committees

to her institution such as the Textbook Task Force and the

President’s Financial Sustainability Task Force.

Outstanding FacultyDr. John Evers

Dr. John Evers has been an

adjunct faculty member at

Heartland Community College

since 2016, teaching Introduction

to Philosophy and Introduction

to World Religions. He fell in

love with Religious Studies as a

philosophy graduate student at

the University of Illinois and feels honored to be able to pass

that love along to his students. He enjoys spending time

after class talking with students about what was discussed

that day and helps them work through some difficult topics

covered. Students appreciate how Dr. Evers makes the

compelling material relevant to their own lives and awakens

a level of excitement about the material. Dr. Evers has a

background in neuroscience, law, and philosophy and has

presented and published on topics in those fields.

Student Speaker Elizabeth Stein

Elizabeth Stein is a

post-traditional student

who took a ten year

hiatus between attempts

at college. During her

time at HCC, she was a

member of Project RISE

and became a Peer Mentor

with the program, as well as served as the Community

Outreach Director on the Heartland Activities Committee

and represented the group in the Student Government

Association. Elizabeth will transfer to Illinois Wesleyan

University in the fall, double majoring in English and

Secondary Education. Her professional goal is to teach

English in Japan, and eventually come back to the states to

teach creative writing.

Alpha Delta Nu Δ The Organization for Associate Degree Nursing (OADN) has established the Alpha Delta Nu Honor Society to promote scholarship and academic excellence in the profession of nursing. It recognizes nursing students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Phi Theta Kappa *To qualify for Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society of two-year colleges, students must achieve a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better and receive a recommendation from Heartland faculty. Members take part in social, community and fundraising activities. The society also gives members opportunities to participate in the organization at the national level.

Honors Program ΘThe Honors Program at Heartland follows the curricular program of Phi Theta Kappa and recognizes the importance of four hallmarks of high academic achievement: leadership, scholarship, fellowship and service. Students new to Heartland must meet a number of criteria for admittance and current HCC students with a GPA of 3.5 or higher are eligible to apply for admission to the program.

Phi Beta Lambda γPhi Beta Lambda (PBL) is a business organization that brings business and education together through career development and leadership programs.

College NOW Dual Degree ÇThe College NOW dual credit program provides the opportunity for eligible high school students to earn college credit. A select group of dual degree earners successfully complete all the college credits needed for their associates degree at the same time they are completing high school graduation requirements.

Adult EducationHeartland’s Adult Education program provides students with opportunities to prepare for the High School Equivalency (HSE) test or other high school equivalency exams. Adult Education also offers the Academic English Language Program (AELP) which helps students improve their language skills to prepare for college-level classes.

HALOThe Heartland Academy for Learning Opportunities (HALO) program promotes the next level of independence in an inclusive college experience, enhancing independent living, employability and academic skills. The Certificate of Achievement in Life Skills Development is an additional HALO certificate including general studies and work-based training. The HALO Certificate requires two years of coursework emphasizing transferable life skills and core academics.
