QUICK FACTS/INFORMATION
2013 EUREKA COLLEGE MEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE
THIS IS EUREKA COLLEGEEureka College is a family. A small family. Our historic campus, located
on 112 wooded acres in the heart of Central Illinois, can best be described
as charming and friendly. Our focus on a comprehensive liberal arts
education, with major emphasis on leadership and service to others, is
one-of-a-kind. Our proximity to Peoria, Bloomington-Normal, Chicago, St.
Louis and Indianapolis make us ideal for those looking for major market
facilities, yet like to return to a safe, secure, and small town environment.
HOW SMALL IS SMALL?Eureka College has just under 800 students. Is this a disadvantage? On the contrary -- we view it
as an amazing advantage. David Everett’s (1769–1813) line, “...large streams from little fountains
ow, tall oaks from little acorns grow “ rings true at Eureka. Each of those lucky enough to
become a part of Eureka College and our traditions nd themselves supported, encouraged, and
treated, not as a number...but as the extraordinary and creative individuals they are.
In this unique and empowering environment some of the best and brightest have discovered
their strong sense of self, their vocation for their future, and a deep love for this special small
campus. Imagine - from this small campus has come forty-two college presidents, seven
governors and members of Congress, a Nobel Laureate team member, and the 40th President of
the United States. EC has over 5,000 living graduates located around the world. You’ll nd many
of them serving the current President of the United States, serving as doctors, lawyers, teachers,
and heads of non-pro t organizations around the globe.
Eureka’s historic campus has 112 acres with 24 buildings. The College o! ers more than
30 majors and programs of study.

DR. J. DAVID ARNOLDEUREKA COLLEGE PRESIDENT
J. David Arnold, Ph.D., is serving in his ninth year as president
and professor of psychology at Eureka College. During his
tenure at Eureka, the College created a strategic plan entitled
“Growth with Integrity” that has achieved record enrollments
and balanced budgets while reducing tuition/tuition discount
and increasing net tuition revenue; launched the Ivy Project
to achieve campus improvements, including the construction
of a new residence hall; and doubled the percentage of
alumni giving.
Other recent achievements include the expansion of faculty
resources, creation of visiting scholar and executive programs, and the implementation of
a new organizational leadership program to attract non-traditional students. Building on a
legacy of creating servant leaders, a Reagan Forward initiative was implemented in 2008 to
focus on leadership and service—related events include a national academic conference and
hosting dozens of guest lectures on servant leadership, including one by Mikhail Gorbachev.
Dr. Arnold formerly was vice president for academic and student a airs at Missouri Western
State College, St. Joseph, Mo. He also served as provost at St. John Fisher College and as
a dean and grants o cer at Clarion University. He started his academic career teaching
psychology and writing at St. Lawrence University, a residential liberal arts college where he
was tenured and promoted before becoming an associate dean.
As an academic leader and author, Dr. Arnold has focused on forging connections between
the curricular, co-curricular, and extracurricular spheres of students’ experience in learning
communities, engaging faculty in strategic planning, and promoting the “teacher-scholar”
model of faculty professional development at liberal arts institutions.
A native of Lancaster, Pa., and the rst in his family to graduate from college, Dr. Arnold
completed his undergraduate degree with honors at Bloomsburg University (formerly
Bloomsburg State College), graduate work at the University of New Hampshire, and summer
post-doctoral study at the Institute for Educational Management at Harvard University.
A self-described movie bu and nature enthusiast, Dr. Arnold and his wife Katherine have
three grown children and twin granddaughters.

a new rst year, transfer student, commuter,
or upperclassman, taking advantage of what
we have to o er will be to your bene t. The
college experience is about growing the
holistic student in all areas including outside
the classroom. By giving of your time and
talents to an organization, the organization
can thrive and your college experience will be
even more valuable.
The Student Activities O ce at Eureka
College strives to promote co-curricular
involvement in the areas of organizations
and activities using various resources on
and o campus including the Cerf College
Center; center of campus community life. We
encourage personal development socially,
interpersonally, and morally through student
engagement. Providing programming,
campus activities, and resources we strive
to cultivate holistic student growth and
development and in turn support the mission
of Eureka College.
The Donald B. Cerf Center is a focal point
of campus activity, housing the “Burgoo“
-- the campus snack bar -- and the College
Bookstore. The Cerf Center also houses the
Ronald W. Reagan Museum.
IMPARTING LEADERSHIPOver the years, Eureka College has grown
to be known as much for its leadership
development as it has for its academic
excellence. Eureka’s roots date back to
abolionist pioneers from Kentucky who came
to Central Illinois to establish an education
steeped in values-based leadership. They
believed that an education, combined with
faith and values, would help shape the leaders
for generations to come. Their vision has
shown outstanding results.
Eureka College founders were leaders.
Exceptional leaders. Leaders ahead of their
time.
Leaders who believed women have the right
to a college education. They not only believed
it but they made it happen. EC was the third
college in the nation to admit men and
women on an equal basis.
Leaders who believed that slavery was morally
wrong. Not only did that they believe that
slavery was wrong, but our leaders began
enrollment of minorities long before it was
called “diversity”. It was simply called “the right
thing to do”.

Ronald Reagan, the 40th President of the
United States, graduated from Eureka College
with a Bachelor of Arts degree in social science
and economics in 1932.
The members of the Eureka faculty excel
at scholarship, teaching, and mentoring
students. Three of every four faculty members
have the highest degrees in their ! elds.
Enrollment is just less than 800 students. While
most are from Illinois, our students also come
from states coast to coast and from several
other countries.
ACADEMICSThe academic program at Eureka College
seeks to maintain a balance between
requirements which all students must meet
and freedom for each student to select those
courses which will best match and further
one’s own interests, skills, and life plan. The
structure of the curriculum has been designed
to re ect this balance.
The College believes that there are certain
basic skills and a common core of knowledge
possessed by anyone who would call him/
herself truly educated. Therefore, the College
requires that each student acquire and display
skills in composition, and mathematics. The
College also requires that each student devote
a portion of time to the study of humanities,
ne and performing arts, natural sciences,
and social sciences. These distributional
requirements insure that each student will
have the opportunity to explore that body
of knowledge which is our common cultural
heritage. The program at Eureka is rigorous
both in its goals and in the e ect it demands,
but the College believes it is also exciting and
satisfying.
ABOUT THE FACULTYEureka College faculty play a pivotal role
in working toward the success of each and
every EC student. The College has an average
class size of fteen students and a student-
faculty ratio of 12:1. Many faculty have earned
national and international recognition in
their areas of scholarship, such as: social
responses to alcoholism, the history of slavery;
recognition in lepidoptery, philosophy,
Native American literature; and individually
recognized Fulbright Scholarship recipients.
Most full-time faculty also serve as academic
advisors. Why? Because they view advising as
a form of teaching. They bring to this task the
same level of dedication and diligence they
bring to their classroom work. Approximately
one-quarter of all instructors also pursue
opportunities to teach outside their elds
of study in interdisciplinary courses such
as Freshman and Senior, Honors Seminars,
as well as Western Civilization and Culture
courses.
THE REAGAN INFLUENCEThey were simply known as Dutch and Moon,
nicknames passed down from their father.
Ron was thought to have resembled “the
Dutchman” while Neil looked like comic strip
character “Moon Mullins” with his slicked back

hair. The names stuck.
Younger brother Ron convinced his brother Neil
(3 years his senior) that Eureka College was an
experience he couldn’t pass up. Together, the
Reagan boys worked, studied, and developed a
foundation that would stick. The EC foundation
took them far. Both men were generous
and throughout their future successes they
remembered Eureka and the campus they
loved so well.
During his four years at Eureka, Reagan
demonstrated his gratitude by immersing
himself in the life of the College. He even
convinced his older brother Neil to enroll in the
fall of 1928, creating the enviable situation of
his older brother waiting on him as a pledge at
the TKE house.
Ronald Reagan graduated in 1932 with a
Bachelor of Arts degree in social science and
economics. He moved to Davenport, Iowa, to
accept a position as a sports announcer for
radio station WOC. His career led him on to
Hollywood and then into state and national
politics, but his loyalty to Eureka College was
evidenced by his three six-year terms on the
College’s Board of Trustees and his continual
involvement in various college related events.
Graduation from Eureka did not diminish
Dutch’s a ection for the school. Throughout his
succession of careers, from Actor to Politician
to President, Mr. Reagan was a frequent visitor
to campus. He used his visits to Eureka to
remind the audience that if he had it to do over
again, he’d return to Eureka. In fact, he chose
Eureka as the location to deliver one of his
most important speeches on Arms Control as
President. Remembered in foreign policy circles
as “The Eureka Speech,” Reagan chose the 50th
anniversary of his graduation from Eureka to
introduce START (Strategic Arms Reduction
Treaty) -- a program that continues to play an
important role in nuclear disarmament.
From sports broadcaster, to actor, to politician,
Dutch Reagan’s four years of personal
development at Eureka launched him into a
lifetime of leadership. What was it that he took
with him beyond that “small school on the
hill?” His classmates say it was charisma and an
enthusiasm for any project he was involved in.
Others point to the mentoring relationships
from members of the Eureka community,
like coach McKinzie and drama teacher Ellen
Johnson. It was likely a combination of the two.

HISTORY
Woodford County was organized in 1841 by a committee of pioneers headed by Thomas
Bullock, who came to the Walnut Grove community (now Eureka) in 1835 from his birthplace
in Versailles, Woodford County, Kentucky. Eureka was incorporated by an act of the Illinois
Legislature on February 23, 1859 and was
designated as the Woodford County seat in 1894.
Walnut Grove was a community extending about
! ve miles north and south along Walnut Creek and
a mile or so east -and west of the creek. Some sixty
families settled in this area between 1828 and 1855.
There was no local government. There was no store
before 1852, and there were only 2 institutions
before 1855. The ! rst was the Christian Church,
organized in 1832. The second was Walnut Grove
Academy, which opened in 1848. The academy
over time became the center of local interest and a
membership on its board was a mark of both power
and leadership.
Around 1850 the beginnings of a town began to
sprout along what is now Cemetery Street, near
the church and the academy. This development
soon lapsed around the same time as the arrival of John Darst. Originally from Dayton, Ohio,
Darst arrived at Walnut Grove in 1851 at the age of 35. He bought land, and when conditions
were favorable in 1855 he platted the original town of Eureka. On January 1, 1856 he sold lots
around what is now the courthouse square. Eureka’s population since 1860 has continued to
" ourish throughout the years, growing from 604 people in 1860, to 1,661 people in 1900, and
to 4,871 people in the year 2000.

2013 EUREKA COLLEGE MEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE
Opened in 2007 as one of the nest NCAA Division III soccer facilities in the Midwest, Traister Field serves as the home of the Eureka College
men’s soccer team.
Located along Dickinson Drive on the far eastern side of campus, Traister Field features a natural grass playing surface, full irrigation system, two-
story press box for media and game operations, concession area and sheltered dugout areas for both teams. Fans regularly line the sideline with
chairs and blankets and take advantage of the spectacular view of the pitch from the hillside behind the south goal line. A full, regulation-sized
practice area is available for the Red Devils just north of the playing pitch.
The facility was dedicated for and named after Eureka Athletics Hall of
Famer Leo “Doc” Traister during a ceremony on Oct. 24, 2008. Traister
came to Eureka as a student-athlete in 1939, earning four letters
in baseball, three letters in football and two letters in track before
graduating in 1948. Traister returned to campus in 1956 to serve as
Director of Athletics and coach all EC sports until 1966.
Traister remained on various coaching sta s until as late as 1990 and
nished his stint on the basketball coaching sta in 1974 as the all-time
wins leader at EC with 168. He was inducted into the Eureka College
Athletics Hall of Fame in 1977 and remains actively involved with his
wife, Betty, as supporters of the Eureka College athletics department.
Traister Field also serves as an occasional home for area high school
matches, as well as various summer youth soccer camps conducted by
Eureka College and its coaching sta s.
The Eureka women’s soccer team recorded a 5-4 victory over Rockford
in the rst regular season game played at the facility on Sept. 6, 2007.
The EC men’s and women’s squads have combined to win 30 matches
on their home pitch in the six-year NCAA Division III history of the program.

2013 EUREKA COLLEGE MEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE
ST. LOUIS INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC CONFERENCEThe St Louis intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) was formally
chartered in September of 1989 at Maryville University of St. Louis and
the rst championships were conducted during the 1990-91 school
year. The constitution of the conference is structured according to the
National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) format and all member
schools will be associated only with the NCAA. Member institutions
have adopted an NCAA competitive philosophy, which in part states,
the college places special importance of the impact of athletics on the
participants rather than on the spectators. SLIAC member schools are
committed to this end. Scholarships to SLIAC schools are based on
academics and need
only. There are no
provisions for athletic
scholarships. This helps
assure that the student-
athlete is a student in the
purest sense.
The SLIAC is composed of
nine private institutions
in Kentucky, Illinois and
Missouri. Members
are: Blackburn College,
Carlinville, Ill.; Eureka
College, Eureka, Ill.; Fontbonne University, St. Louis, Mo.; Greenville
College, Greenville, Ill.; Iowa Wesleyan College, Mount Pleasant, Iowa;
MacMurray College, Jacksonville, Ill.; Principia College, Elsah, Ill.;
Spalding University, Louisville, Ky.; Webster University, St. Louis, Mo.; and
Westminster College, Fulton, Mo.
SLIAC institutions provide student-athletes the opportunity to compete
on an equal and competitive level, thus permitting the student-athletes
the opportunity to compete for conference, regional and national
championships. Team championships are contested in women’s
cross country, soccer, volleyball, basketball, softball and tennis. Men’s
championship sports are cross country, soccer, basketball, baseball, golf
and tennis.

SLIAC MISSIONTo enhance the student-athletes’ educational process through intercollegiate competitive activity encompassing the rules of fairness based on
the highest standards of integrity and sportsmanlike conduct.
Colleges and universities in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference consider the athletic experience an integral component of the
educational process. In so doing, the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference seeks to coordinate the objectives and programs of athletics
with the academic developmental objectives and to ensure the integration of athletes with other students.
