a note from the President
Volunteerism, a mainstay in the nonprofit sector, has now become a vital force for successful businesses. It is no longer enough for a business to solely support through monetary donations. The employees at the businesses, ever busy with longer work hours, seek opportunities to give back through corporate volunteerism programs. The consumers are looking to see not only where a company supports its community financially, but where they give back with their time and talents. This trend has made corporate volunteer councils across the country an integral part of employee volunteer programs for many businesses; both big and small. Corporate volunteer councils serve as a place for business professionals to seek best practices and new ideas, to network and to find ready-made volunteer events for their employees. Few businesses have staff dedicated to employee volunteer programs. Most assign this as an additional job duty and it can be quite tasking. Corporate volunteer councils such as our own Hampton Roads Corporate Volunteer Council assist these busy professionals to run effective employee volunteer programs without taking time away from their regular job duties.
VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads is the region’s nonprofit resource enter and has been strengthening nonprofits to identify and address critical local needs by delivering services and executing
our vision through three mission pillars. VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads is committed to encouraging, building, and helping to strengthen corporate engagement in our community. We strive to promote volunteerism and civic engagement in Hampton Roads. Our vision is to promote the quality of life for all who live in our community by being strong catalysts in the development of nonprofit resources and corporate social responsibility.
As our year comes to a close, we look back on what we have accomplished collectively and are proud to have been able to improve the lives of so many in Hampton Roads. I invite you to take a look at the impact we have made and become a key broker in community outreach.

a letter from our hrcVc Presdent What an extraordinary year we have witnessed on the Hampton Roads Corporate Volunteer Council (HRCVC). We have combined efforts to make a lasting impact on the lives of the underserved in Hampton Roads. I continue to broaden my network and my knowledge each month by connecting with HRCVC colleagues at our service events or monthly meetings. I am inspired by the level of generosity that exists in our corporate sector.
At this year’s meetings, we learned from organizations ranging from animal support to education, as well as many other impact areas. We learned first hand their missions and how our companies could provide critical support. We shared best practices as HRCVC companies developed and deployed resources and expertise to benefit nonprofits in our community.
It has been my honor to serve as the 2012 HRCVC President. I invite you to join me as we celebrate this year’s collective impact and open our imaginations to all we can accomplish in the future together.

corporate volunteer imPAct dAtAAs demands on time continue to rise for so many Americans, finding a moment to volunteer can be challenging. Our nonprofits are continuing to see a steady increase in their client list and need now, more than ever, the valuable benefits volunteers can provide. Americans respond to the call to action, nearly 26% of our nation finds the time to give back by volunteering, which equates to roughly 62.8 million people and 8.1 billion hours of service. With a 1% increase in our volunteer rate, we could add nearly 300 million more hours of service. Below is just snapshot of how the Hampton Roads region steps up to the plate:

The Hampton Roads Corporate Volunteer Council began in 1998, through VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads. The council has grown from 18 companies in 1998 to nearly 60 companies in 2012. With companies ranging in size from 1,800 employees to as few as 7 employees, the council has continued to work together to better the communities in which they conduct business, to improve their companies philanthropy and volunteering programs, to promote volunteerism among employees and to share best practices with one another. The council receives monthly training topics, hosts a platform for area nonprofits to speak to corporate representatives and strives for civic engagement.

Workplace volunteer programs have steadily increased and are needed now more than ever to fill in the gaps left between the needs of nonprofits, and the percentage of volunteers in the United States. These companies play a vital role for employees seeking to give back and have work life balance. There are numerous benefits for the business -- they are viewed as good corporate citizens, potentially increasing their profits; they are able to utilize volunteer opportunities as a training program for upcoming managers and executives. This is a great arena to teach and enhance employees leadership acumen through skills based volunteering.
