The Thodos Dance Chicago Company provides an excellent danceresidency for schools. Thodos will provide Oriole Park with anassembly of various dance styles followed by a 3 week residency.Dance instructors will come in twice a week for 3 weeks to teach5th grade in one specific dance style. The culminating event will bea performance for the entire school.
TDC’s Imagine Dance is an exciting, interactive dance assembly thateducates students about the concepts and tools employed increating dance. This program is a great way for students to learnabout the different techniques of dance and their history, includingballet, jazz, hip hop, and contemporary dance. The program contains participatory exercises requiring studentgenerated ideas and the execution of those ideas by studentsthemselves onstage. This program is suited for Grades K-8 andwould be a great introduction for a dance residency program. The type of dance instruction for the three week session will be aDance FUNdamentals course where students explore a variety ofdance techniques that include ballet, jazz, hip hop, and dancecreation. It is an exciting and innovative way to introduce to the technical, creative, and expressive qualities of dance.
Though Oriole Park offers music, art, and drama, one area that hasnot been strong is dance. In previous years there has been danceclasses offered through P.E. but nothing has been consistentthroughout the years.
With the help of this grant and a partnership with Thodos DanceChicago, Oriole Park can obtain a regular residency for studentsevery year and have the benefit of a fully enriching arts experiencethroughout their elementary career at Oriole Park.
Aside from this enriching opportunity, Oriole Park gains a regularpartnership, which we currently do not have.
Oriole Park school has a comprehensive general music class for Pre-K through 8th grade. Furthermore, there are two after schoolensembles, OPS Rock Band & OPS Rockers, where students learn to
and dance instruction to 3 through 6th grade students and start a percussion orchestra program for 6 graders. Students will
receive music and dance instruction, compose original music and choreograph original dance, attend a professional concert, and
perform original work for the school community.

play various rock band instruments and perform as an group at anend of the year concert.
Aside from music, Oriole Park also offers art classes for K through8th grade. Each grade level is enriched with an hour a week classesin both music and art.
Oriole Park also has an after school drama club where studentsprepare, rehearse, and perform a musical or show every spring.Last year was Seussical and this upcoming year will be Willy Wonkaand the Chocolate Factory.
As you can see, we are proud of what we are able to provide ourstudents and realize our next step to further their enrichment inthe arts is to offer a dance partnership. If chosen for this grant, wewill finally offer the four main criteria of art defined by the CPSArts Department.
25.A.2a Dance:Identify and describe the elements of pathways, level, focus, rangein space, sustained and percussive qualities of speed; the principlesof ABA and round choreographic form, contrast and repetition; andthe expressive qualities of mood and emotion.
26.B.2a Dance:Demonstrate control, coordination, balance, elevation and accuracyin rhythmic response and awareness of choreographic form.
27.B.2 Identify and describe how the arts communicate thesimilarities and differences among various people, places andtimes.
Learning will be assessed with a pre & post assessment as well as aculminating performance.
Throughout weekly meetings from the fine arts department, bothPrincipal Riff and Assistant Principal Weinberg have expressed theirenthusiasm for a dance residency in Oriole Park School. With ourschool already having a strong presence in music, art, and drama;including dance in the fine arts curriculum will further enrich ourstudents and provide yet another creative outlet for our students tothrive.
