It is a pleasure to write a foreword to the Year 2000, York Perspective.
Once more, you, the reader can catch a wonderful bird's eye view of life at the school. It is brimful of the dayto-day events and activities of all the students from the Early Years Program to the grade 8 Graduating Class.
This year is the first year we have two editions of our yearbook. With the growth of the Upper School, we have made a decision to present the school in two parts in order to be able to include more breadth in both yearbooks.
It takes a great deal of hard work to put together a publication such as this. Many thanks to the Yearbook Committee: Mrs. Chandler, Mrs. Mason, and Tom Dovey.

Now, just sit back and enjoy your Millennium issue of York's wonderful yearbook, Perspective'OO, and keep it close at hand so that you can reach for it again and savour the relationships. Have a great summer!

SPRING ART SHOW AT YORK
What an enjoyable evening! The annual art show was a huge success. Everyone in the large turnout was most impressed with the talented students in grades 1 to 8. A huge undertaking, but a most rewarding one for everyone involved: teachers, Mr. Snow, Mr. Kupec and Mrs. Alexander, students and parent volunteers.

The Montessori "Method"
" .......... Montessori philosophy is .. . being used as originally intended, as a method of seeing children as they really are and of creating environments which foster the fulfillment of their highest potential-spiritual, emotional, physical and intellectual - as members of a family, the world community and the Cosmos .... When physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional needs are met children glow with excitement and a drive to play and work with enthusiasm, to leam, and to create. They exhibit a desire to teach, help, and care for others and for their environment."

WHEN I GROW UP
When I grow up, I want to be A grown-up who remembers me And what it felt like to be small: How much I liked to bounce a ball And pump my swing high in the air And think of flying everywhere. How scared I was of doors that creak Or being it in hide-and-seek Or if my parents had a fight Or when I had bad dreams at night. How much I hated loud machines And slimy worms and lima beans. What fun it was to dig a hole, To make a cake and lick the bowl, To ride my bike all afternoon, To plan on going to the moon, To find an egg inside a nest And have my best friend like me best.

THE MIDDLE SCHOOL
Mrs. Dowman is Curriculum Head of Technology and a Grade 7 teacher. She fills both of these roles at the York School with energy, enthusiasm and foresight. We all owe Mrs. Dowman a vote of thanks for her efforts in bringing "technology" to York. As a concerned environmentalist she has initiated programs for Reducing, Reusing and Recycling. Mrs. Dowman has reinforced the meaning of Earth Day for students and faculty. She is a devoted, hard-working teacher, committed to bringing out the best in her students.
Miss Charron is Head of the Middle School at York and a Grade 8 teacher. She is a staunch supporter of The York School, devoted to her class and aware of individual students' needs as learners and as people. She plays a vital role in many of the varied aspects of school life at York, organizing The United Way fundraising drive, Pizza lunches, and assisting with drama productions and the Author's Corner publication. She co-ordinates House functions and oversees the math curriculum. It is an impressive list! Miss Charron is committed to her students, and each day brings her skills and energy to York.

I've only been at York for 2 years but I've made some good friends. I've worked hard and learned a lot. I am not returning to York next year but I will always remember my friends, the times I've shared with them and how much I've learned.

Liam Cohl
I have been at York as long as I can remember. I still remember when the school had only nine classes and It was in the back of a church on Sheldrake. One good memory of York was winning the M.I.P. In under t4 badminton team. I don't think I can say anything like "this school is so different compared to my last," because I have never been to another school. I am not sure what I am doing next year. According to Hollywood it is always good to finish with a quote, I hope they're right. "The future is something which everyone reaches at a rate of sixty minutes an hour, whatever he does, whoever he is" C.S. Lewis

I was at York when it moved to 1320 from Sheldrake and I think the new location is great. I'm not sure if I'm returning but I know that the York School has given me a great education and prepared me for high school.
Megan Miller
York has been a great experience. I set many goals for myself and learned many new skills in all the subjects. I had a lot of fun during my two years here. I made many new friends that I love and will miss very much but will be friends with for life. We have many inside jokes like ... "white now","say what","vege","wick", and "so hot". I have been at York for 3 years, coming in grade 6, Many friends I have made, which I hope to keep, Memories abundant have come my way, like Dorset, Humber, and the Soccer Teams that never won, Playing sports in the bubble Is something no other school can say, I still remember the track meets, boiling in the sun, Although we were dehydrated it was still tun, There always was lots of work that took a long time, But in the end what do I have to show? I learned a lot from teachers, but it's not time to go, So I will see you next year, York. Bye!

Michael Richardson
This is the end of my eighth year at York. I've played on the soccer, cross-country, track, and basketball teams. In eight years I've made a lot of friends, and I've learned a lot.
Darin Tay I've only been at York for a year and a term, but I still have many memories. I'll never forget the conviction of the middle school teachers to make sure we are prepared for later in life. They stay at school late and get here early so you can always see them lor help with work. At this school I've learned a lot, and I've received awards, including the French award. The most amazing thing I've done at this school and in my life, has been receiving 100% on my grade seven history exam. I'm staying at York next year and intend to keep playing and programming games on the computer while listening to the band Prozzak. I'll end with a great quote that I think relates to me. "I'm a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work, the more of it I have." -Thomas Edison
Sasha Toten
This is my fi rst year at York, and the first half has been really great. I played on the fall basketball team and had a great time with my team at our tournament in Montreal. I can't wait to go to Quebec City with my grade in February. It's been a lot of fun. Matt Greyson
Chapter One: On the days of yore we could not propose a toast until the day of enrichment had arrived. On the high noon of June 14, 2000 our new savior had left one world of education and had arrived into the heat of our chaotic world. Matt Greyson had enjoyed sports, friends, fun and memories he will remember forever. A real York veteran, arriving in grade one and continuing in his academic run until grade eight and maybe further. I had a great time with everyone I had met and I hope to see you all soon!! "What me worry?" (MAD Magazine)

Hi, I'm Chris Simpson. Could you call me a hero? No. A leader? No. Intelligent? Sometimes. Some people call me weird, but honestly, I'm a cool guy. I've been at York for nine years. Since I came to York, I've done many things. This includes, making lots of friends, making many sports teams (basketball, soccer, volleyball, baseball, and crosscountry). My favourite things are listening to music, playing basketball, and talking to friends on the phone. I'll be back next year, but for now, bye. P.S. Mad Props- Nick, Care Bear, and B-Shops to J.G.
Not included due to late enrollment, Paul Shirriff.

3RADE SEVEN VISITS THE LESLIE M. FROST CENTRE IN DORSET, SEPTEMBER 1999

Experience teaches!
80
During the time between September 27 to September 29. the grade 7 classes from York School went to The Leslie M. Frost Centre on the shores of Lake St. Nora. We learned many things about the lake, such as how deep light can visually penetrate the water. The other activities were fun and enjoyable ... lapidary work or the GIS programme, a dance and volleyball or basketball during spare time ... Another programme we did was a geomorphology hike ... similar to the mapping programme ... The outdoors prove to be a very educational learning experience for all of us.

WE CELEBRATE THE SEASON ... WE SEND VALENTINES
AWAY IN A MANGER ... CHRISTMAS AT YORK
The annual York School Christmas celebration was held at Christ Church Deer Park on December 16, 1999. As is the tradition, the grade fives presented the story of Christmas with assistance from our grade one "angels". The afternoon was filled with "comfort and joy" - a wonderful beginning to the holiday season.

"Latke Ladies"
The grade six students gave a thoughtful and well-prepared presentation about the various festivals of light celebrated around the world. The boys and girls focussed on festivals such as Kwanza (celebrating black heritage), Diwali (a popular Hindu festival at the beginning of winter), St. Lucia Day (begins the Christmas season in Scandinavia) and Hannukah. The menorahs were lit, dreydle games played, and delicious latkes devoured, Congratulations Grade 6F and 6J!

The York 5/6 volleyball team was a great success. As the season went on, everyone got better. In the beginning of the season it was a miracle when a serve went over the net, and at the end of the season everyone got a serve over. Plus Ms. Gilbert was a great coach!

I think student council is a good idea because it makes the school a better place to be in. I like being student council rep., because I like having meetings and knowing what other people think. When ideas are too silly I just skip them. There are a lot of suggestions that I don't agree with. Some I agree with, like getting recess equipment. Kaya Sabag, 3C
