Where there's smogthere's overreactionWintercanbeabitofashock
for many migrants to SouthCanterbury, particularlythose ofus from the north.
When I arrived last April, the first advice I was givenwas to layina good stock offirewood.
I have to be honest and
admitthat Idi(in'tthinkthat
would be necessary. But my first electricity bill,
and my first five-degree frost.,soon convinced me otherwise.
Although I was too late toget anything dry.
Nevertheless, that logburner in my lounge was afamily saviour.
I also noticed the smogwhen I ventured outdoors
after 6pm. However, that wasrare given the airtemperature and I noticed ithad all generally dissipatedby morning.
Then IreadthatECan-
this strange beast that is theprovince's regional council -wastalkingaboutthesmogasifitwasakillershroudandwewere in 1950s London.
And how theyweregoing tocleanupTimaru'sairbycompulsion ifnecessary.
This was accompanied by ahectoringwoman, frowningout from the back oflocal
buses, accusing me ofnotknowing how to start a fireproperly. Yes, Timaru's smogwas all my fault
Then the local editorial
writer weighed in, saying
Laying , *1Down
the Laws
Timartihad to clean up its actExcept there's a small
problem. Exactly, what is theproblem?
Where's the proofthat theoccasional nightoflingeringfire fumes causes anyproblem at all? There's beennone. In fact, the lack offactual evidence has been
startlingIn its placetherehas been a
misguided fanaticism that"something mustbedone"whenthere isn'treallyaproblematall
There are no health
problems, and there havebeen no hospital admissionsor respiratory attacks as aconsequence.
And why's that? Because99% ofTimaru is indoors on
the freezing nights thatproduce the worst fire smoke.
And the other 1% soon will
be-because no-one wants to
stand outside at 10pm,freezing. Strange that
Which is why I say: we mustresistthese so called "cleanair" advocates.
All theywill achieve is thedoubling ofour already
expensive electricilybills andthat will really send people tohospital, especially the poor, the elderly and the vulnerablebecause they can no longerafford to heattheir homes
4properly.
And anybodywho wants todonate this soft northernfamily some ofthe locallog, please don't letme stop you.Come winter, I'll burnwithgratitude and pride.
RETIREMENT
VILLAGES
I've said this before, but it'sworththe repeat-SouthCanterbury has got somethingspecial going. School numbersare up, business is booming, new businesses are arrivingand new retirementvillagesare being built
The complex underconstruction atElloughtonGardens is the latest. They aregood business foranytownand attract solid citizens,well-heeled and with arealinterest in volunteer work
Retirementvillages arenotrest-homes-they're vibrantcommunities.
And they confirm theongoing desirability ofTimaru.
