CXS490 - Pre-Engineered Fire Protection Systems

Off-Road Vehicle Systems

2

• systems can be either manually operated

or automatically operated.

• uses multi-purpose dry chemical

(monoammonium phosphate base)

for Class A, B and C fires.

• not designed to extinguish all possible fires

occurring on off-road vehicles.

Overview

3

Cylinders with Separate Expellant Tanks

4

Another Configuration

5

• pre-engineered

• cartridge-operated dry chemical system with

• a fixed nozzle distribution network.

• approved by Factory Mutual Research Corporation

• capable of automatic detection & actuation and/or

• remote manual actuation.

Description

6

When a fire is detected,

• system is actuated either manually or automatically,

• operating the pneumatic actuator

• pneumatic actuator ruptures a seal disc in expellant gas cartridge

• This pressurizes & fluidizes dry chemical extinguishing agent

the tank,

• ruptures the burst disc when the required pressure is reached

• propels the dry chemical through the network of distribution hose

• dry chemical discharged through fixed nozzles and

• into the protected areas

• suppressing the fire.

Operation

7

Automatic detection incorporates

• electric detection

• either linear detection wire or

• spot detection.

Detection

8

Mobile equipment and industrial hazards

• total flooding or

• local application

Application

9

Consists of:

• Dry Chemical Agent Storage Tank(s),

• Expellant Gas Cartridge,

• Distribution Piping (Hose) and

• Nozzles,

• ManualI/Automatic Actuator,

• Automatic Detection System,and

• Accessories.

Basic System

10

Consists of

• a welded steel tank,

• gas tube

• brass fill cap,

• agent outlet bursting disc and union,

• instruction nameplate.

Agent Storage Tank

11

Tanks for temperature ranges of +32 F to +120 F

(0 C to +49 C)

LT-A-101-10, has cartridge receiver and

an expellant gas cartridge located on side of tank.

Agent Storage Tank

12

• Low profile & extreme temperature tanks

-65 F to +210 F (-54 C to +99 C)

• have a separate remote cartridge

• connected to the tank by

• high pressure 114 in. (2.9 m) hose.

• Tanks painted with a red enamel paint

• Available in five sizes

10 Ib.(4.5 kg); 20 Ib.(9 kg); 30 Ib. (13.5 kg)

125 Ib. (57 kg) & 250 Ib.(114 kg)

Agent Storage Tank

13

Consists of:

• a rugged, welded steel back plate and

• clamp arm assembly

• designed to retain & protect agent storage tank

in hostile environment that they are installed in.

• painted red enamel and

• can be mounted by bolting or welding.

Mounting Bracket - Smaller Tanks

14

• is fabricated of 1/2 in. steel

• conforms to the outline of the

tank assembly bottom

• can be welded to the mounting surface and

• tank can then be bolted to ring

using the pre-threaded holes in ring.

Mounting Ring - Larger Tanks

15

• spun high pressure cartridge containing

• carbon dioxide for temperature ranges of

+32°F to +120°F (0°C to +49°C)

• nitrogen for extreme temperature ranges of

-65°F to +210°F (-54°C to +99°C).

Expellant Gas Cartridge

16

• distribution piping (hose) network is

• designed to properly distribute the dry

chemical to the nozzles

• hose (to survive the vibration on mobile

equipment) is used to distribute the dry chemical

• Pre-engineered systems have predetermined

• hose sizes

• maximum and minimum hose lengths, and

• number of nozzles.

Distribution Piping

17

• three types of nozzles available

• each type of nozzle designed and tested for

various applications and area of coverage

• Nozzle blow-off caps are available

• keeps nozzles free of dirt and grease.

Nozzles

18

Manual/Automatic Actuator(s)

• manual actuator consists of an actuator body,

• a nitrogen cartridge, and

• a mounting bracket

Actuators

19

Two types of manual actuators are available:• Remote & Dashboard

• When manual actuator is operated by hand

• gas supplied from nitrogen cartridge released

into 114 in. (2.9 m) actuation hose

• nitrogen pressure operates pneumatic actuator

punctures a larger expellant gas cartridge

(carbon dioxide or nitrogen)

• fluidizes and propels dry chemical from tank.

Actuators

20

Automatic actuators operate the same way

except they can be operated automatically

by the detection system.

Actuators

21

Three types of detector options can be used:

• a temperature-sensitive linear wire,

• a spot type heat detector, or

• a gas filled stainless steel tubing.

Detection System Types

22

Temperature-sensitive linear wire

When fire breaks out

• wire insulation melts,

• completing an electrical circuit and

• causes detection system to actuate

fire suppression system.

Linear Wire

23

Internal contacts

• close when the temperature of surrounding air

• reaches set point temperature of detector

• this completes an electrical circuit and

• causes the detection system to actuate

the fire suppression system.

Spot Type Heat Detectors

24

Gas filled stainless steel tubing

When the gas in the tubing heats up

• the increase in pressure operates a responder

• completing an electrical circuit and

• causes the detection system to actuate fire

suppression system.

Gas Filled Tubing

25

Detection & Control System

26

• dry chemical pre-engineered,

• incorporating automatic detection

• with engine shutdown capabilities.

• Approved by Factory Mutual Research Corporation

based on actual fire tests by manufacturer

Specifications

27

• Installation shall be in accordance with

• approved Design, Installation, Maintenance Manual
