We carry large assortments of flowers and garden plants
8A / Tuesday, May 11, 2010 The Enquirer-Journal
Every season has something that a gardener enjoys. In sum-mer, you have all the flowers that require warm soil. The different varieties that bloom are endless. Fall is the sea-son for some as the leaves of many deciduous trees put on a spectacular show. Even winter has camellias, hellebores and snow crocus among others.
Then, there is spring. By the time this season arrives on March 20th, it doesn’t take a lot to make me happy. After a cold winter with few blooming plants, anything with color gets close scrutiny. Everyday you look up to first check for leaf buds. After they appear, you keep watch for tiny pale green leaves. During the hot months of summer, you take leaves for granted. That is not the case in spring, especially after looking at bare trees for so many months.
Actually, if your circum-stances permit, you can have interesting plants and flowers each season of the year. That means every month of the year, your landscape can produce something different. The only things you need are sufficient resources, time and energy. Today, I want to concentrate on some plant items you see in spring. For some plants, this is their only time to shine.
Probably the first shrubs to bloom are the flower-ing quince (Chaenomeles). Around our home, it is the first to grow new leaves. It is also the first to lose its leaves in the fall. I know only positive things to say about the flower-ing quince. It is a tough, prac-tically bulletproof flowering shrub. It transplants easily. It does need some winter cold temperatures to have a profu-sion of blooms. That is prob-ably why there were so many flowers this year. Quince is available in a variety of col-ors including white, pink, red and variations of colors in between those. You can even select ‘Toyo Nishiki’ with pink, white, pink-and-white and red on the same branch. If fruit isn’t enough, the sizes can range from a one-foot tall spreading plant to a six-foot-
er.Most have a citrus-type of
fruit. The fruit resembles a small round lemon. Oddly enough though, I have always heard it called a quince ap-ple. The shape is much like a small apple. Several years ago, I read a book about Magellan and his circumnavigation of the world. On the voyage, the majority of his men were af-flicted with the horrible dis-ease of scurvy. Magellan es-caped the disease, although he did not know why. At the time, scurvy was thought to be car-ried by the wind. The lowly quince apple he ate every day was actually the supplier of vitamin C and the barrier that prevented Magellan from fall-ing ill. If you have blooms, but no fruit, you can try to plant another variety close by for cross-pollination.
There is another sure sign of spring that adds lots of color to the landscape. You can spot it driving through a neighbor-hood, easing down a country road or hurrying along a high-way. It is also one of my favor-ites. The small tree I am refer-ring to is the eastern redbud. The botanical name is Cercis canadensis. The bright colorful blooms seem to be everywhere in early spring. The rosy pink/purple blooms are like a neon sign among all the green leafed trees. You can count hundreds of redbuds when they are in bloom. When the blooms fade however, they are lost once again in a sea of green.
Years ago, we twice tried to dig and replant a wild growing redbud. I later learned that practice is rarely successful, unless the roots are pruned correctly. A container grown redbud is usually no problem
to grow around a home. As a rule, they will take sun or partial shade. Although we failed at planting a wild red-bud, amazingly one sprouted within ten feet of our earlier trials. I can honestly say it is one flowering plant we really look forward to each spring.
If you have never examined an eastern redbud closely, you have missed a treat. Some plants bloom only on branch tips or other designated plac-es. A redbud blooms all over the branches, but also clus-ters of blooms sprout from the slender trunks. Regardless of where the blooms are located, you will find they are actually large clusters of tiny flowers. I like the redbud as a under story tree in our backyard. On one side, we hang a chickadee birdhouse. On the other side hangs a hummingbird feeder.
Our tree is the regular spe-cies redbud. If you want to
purchase a potted redbud and you really want something dif-ferent, you have many choices available. Personally, my fa-vorite is ‘Forest Pansy’ whose new leaves emerge a rich pur-ple color. ‘Covey’ is a dwarf weeping selection. ‘Texas White’ is a form for those who prefer white flowers.
I did not want to end the spotlight on spring spectacu-lars without paying homage to what is commonly called the Easter rose. The botani-cal name is Kerria japonica. This year it definitely lived up to its common name in a tre-mendous fashion. There were thousands of bright yellow blooms in our backyard. Even if the sun had failed to shine, this plant would have provided illumination for Mrs. Green Thumbs to hide the Easter eggs!
You can find both single and double flowering types of this
plant. The stems rise some six feet from the base of the plant before they arch back towards the ground. Bright green leaves are pointed and sharp toothed. The two-inch double blooms on our plants run the length of the stems.
As I mentioned, there is a big show around Easter. Blooms then appear sporadically through the summer. This is a tough, versatile plant. We have some planted in full sun, another one in partial sun. Both bloom equally well. It is adaptable to any type of soil. It is also easy to divide.
Purposely, I left out spring blooming daffodils, tulips, lorapetalum and other notable plants. The reason is I have covered them earlier in some detail. Sure, I could do without these three spring showstop-pers. No doubt, you could also. However, spring just wouldn’t be the same without them.
