Message from the President and Vice-Chancellor

Dear Graduates,Today we celebrate you. You have made it. Congratulations to you all. Though the circumstances are far different than what you may have envisioned for your convocation, I assure you that your hard work and dedication need to be acknowledged and celebrated.

Think back to when you started your programs. Remember the anticipation, the uncertainty, the excitement. The last few months have likely been filled with similar, and perhaps even stronger emotions as the entire world grapples with COVID-19. Uncertainty for what is to come. Anticipation for the world to return to normal – or at least, to a “new normal”.

But, I hope, for all of you, there is also a level of excitement at the opportunities that will come to you in the near future. Even though we live in a time that is unprecedented, it is important to feel optimistic about the future. You have been preparing for your journey towards the future for some time now, and your resilience to withstand life’s adversities will carry you forward.

Over the past several years, you have lived the experience of being a student; you have juggled assignments and priorities; you have encountered new experiences, and developed new relationships; you have successfully navigated the complex world of higher education and academia, courses, syllabi, experiential learning opportunities, requisites and prerequisites, papers and exams.

Professors have encouraged you to think broadly, and to apply the solutions you develop to tangible benefit. They have encouraged you to network, and engage with those around you, to develop relationships and to broaden your worldview.

Most importantly, your family has seen you grow and your friends have watched you transform into the person that is now readier than ever to take on the next challenge, the next step in your career.

There is a reason why Laurentian has held the best post graduation employment rates in the province for more than a decade. Our partnerships with industry, our commitment to workplace experiential learning and our small class sizes ensure our students develop the skills sought after by employers. When asked about your postsecondary studies, you can proudly share that you have been well prepared for the future.

Coming out of this pandemic, our world will be a very different place. Our nation, our province, and our community has had to come together in a way that has not been experienced since the Second World War. Together we are traversing a challenge that affects all people, regardless of gender, race, or socioeconomic background. It is my belief that we will all come out of this challenge stronger, together, and with a sense of unity. Together, we have protected those at highest risk, by making sacrifices. We stayed home when we wanted to be with loved ones. We celebrated milestone events, such as birthdays, anniversaries, and even graduations over Zoom and Facetime... and together we have been able to save lives.

In your final year of studies, you have had to pivot from your routine. You may have had to press pause on your plans for the immediate future. You, Laurentian graduates of 2020 are faced with entering the next phase of your lives just as the entire world has taken a collective pause - which could be a good thing. This is not a race. We are not competing against each other to make it to some fictitious finish line.

In a lifetime filled with milestones and benchmarks we, as a society, have more often given precedent to the fast and furious achievements, having largely turned away from the notion of slow and steady. Here and now, through circumstances beyond our control, you can take a moment to establish and reaffirm your goals, and how you wish to accomplish them. Taking the time to do this is okay, and must be encouraged.

When our new normal emerges, my hope is that you will join a workforce with a heightened sense of empathy for one another, because you are now part of a generation that has witnessed what it means to put the needs of others before yourselves.

It is now time to think about the next step of your journey. Where will you work? What further studies are you considering? Where will you reside? You have never had as many possibilities at hand. Take advantage of this moment. Be courageous and confident as you progress in your career. And remember, no matter how far your journey takes you, wherever you build your future – you will always have a home and a family here at Laurentian University.

Chers diplômés et diplômées,Aujourd’hui, nous vous célébrons. Vous avez réussi. Félicitations.Même si les circonstances sont bien différentes de ce que vous aviez imaginé pour votre collation des grades, je vous assure que votre travail assidu et votre détermination doivent être reconnus et célébrés.

Songez au moment où vous avez commencé votre programme. Souvenez-vous de l’attente, de l’incertitude, de l’enthousiasme. Les derniers mois ont probablement été remplis d’émotions semblables, peut-être même plus fortes, alors que le monde entier était aux prises avec la COVID-19. L’incertitude de ce qui arrivera. L’attente que le monde revienne à la normale, ou du moins, à une « nouvelle normalité ».

J’espère toutefois que vous avez tous un certain degré d’enthousiasme envers les possibilités que vous aurez dans un proche avenir. Même si nous vivons une période sans précédent, il est important d’être optimiste pour l’avenir. Vous préparez votre voyage vers l’avenir depuis quelque temps maintenant, et votre résilience face aux adversités de la vie vous fera aller de l’avant.

Ces dernières années, vous avez fait l’expérience de la vie étudiante : vous avez jonglé avec les travaux et priorités; vous avez fait de nouvelles expériences et établi de nouvelles relations; vous avez réussi à naviguer dans le monde complexe de l’enseignement supérieur, les cours, les plans de cours, les possibilités d’apprentissage par l’expérience, les cours obligatoires et préalables, les travaux et les examens.

Vos professeurs vous ont encouragés à penser en grand et à appliquer les solutions que vous concevez à des avantages concrets. Ils vous ont encouragés à réseauter, à parler à votre entourage, à établir des relations et à élargir votre perspective du monde.

Le plus important, votre famille a constaté votre épanouissement, et vos amis ont vu votre transformation en une personne qui est maintenant plus prête que jamais à relever le prochain défi, la prochaine étape dans sa carrière.

La Laurentienne enregistre depuis plus de dix ans les meilleurs taux d’emploi de la province après l’obtention du grade pour une raison : nos partenariats sectoriels, notre engagement envers l’apprentissage par l’expérience sur le lieu de travail et nos classes de petite taille font que notre population étudiante acquiert les compétences recherchées par les employeurs. Lorsqu’on vous interrogera sur vos études postsecondaires, vous pourrez dire fièrement qu’elles vous ont bien préparés pour l’avenir.

À la fin de cette pandémie, notre monde sera différent. Notre nation, notre province et notre communauté se sont regroupées d’une manière que l’on n’avait pas vue depuis la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Ensemble, nous traversons un défi qui touche tout le monde, peu importe le genre, la race ou la situation socioéconomique. Je crois que nous sortirons tous de ce défi plus fort, ensemble, et avec un sentiment d’unité. Ensemble, nous avons protégé les personnes les plus à risque en faisant des sacrifices. Nous sommes restés chez nous alors que nous voulions être avec nos proches. Nous avons célébré des événements marquants, comme des anniversaires et même des collations de grades sur Zoom et FaceTime et ensemble, nous avons pu sauver des vies.

Au cours de votre dernière année d’études, vous avez dû délaisser votre routine. Vous avez dû mettre vos plans pour l’avenir immédiat en mode « pause ». Vous, les diplômés de 2020 de la Laurentienne, devez entamer la prochaine phase de votre vie à l’heure où le monde entier s’est mis en « pause », ce qui pourrait être une bonne chose. Ce n’est pas une course. Nous ne sommes pas en compétition pour parvenir à une ligne d’arrivée fictive.

Dans une vie remplie de grandes étapes et de repères, nous, en tant que société, donnons souvent la priorité aux succès rapides et impétueux en nous détournant largement de la notion de lenteur et de calme. Ici et maintenant, dans des circonstances qui échappent à notre contrôle, vous pouvez prendre le temps d’établir et de réaffirmer vos buts, et la façon dont vous souhaitez les atteindre. Il est bon et recommandé de prendre le temps de le faire.

Lorsque la nouvelle normalité émergera, j’espère que vous ferez partie d’une main-d’œuvre plus empathique, car vous faites maintenant partie d’une génération qui sait ce que cela signifie de faire passer les besoins des autres avant les vôtres.

Il est maintenant temps de penser à la prochaine étape de votre voyage. Où travaillerez-vous? Quelles autres études envisagez-vous? Où habiterez-vous? Vous n’avez jamais eu autant de possibilités. Tirez parti de ce moment. Soyez courageux et confiants alors que vous avancez dans votre carrière. Et n’oubliez pas : peu importe où votre voyage vous mène, peu importe où vous construisez votre avenir, vous aurez toujours un foyer et une famille ici à l’Université Laurentienne.

Message from the Interim Vice-President Academic and Provost

Aanii, Boozhoo, Kwe Kwe, Congratulations, graduates.Before my current role as Laurentian’s interim Vice-President Academic and Provost, I was Registrar, and in that role, saw thousands of students proudly walk on the stage of the Fraser Auditorium and pick up their diploma, with proud parents, family and friends taking pictures – their very own paparazzi. This is a special occasion, a moment that confirms all of the hard work and sacrifices made during a period of one, two, or even fifteen years before achieving your goal… obtaining an undergraduate degree, a second university degree, or eventually culminate to a doctorate, the highest designation attributed by Laurentian University.

Before, it was my fun to look at the shoes that graduates wore to come get their diplomas – they were nice black formal men’s shoes, sleek high heels, running shoes, sandals, and for midwifery grads, the traditional red shoes of any form.

I may have only met a handful of you during your stay at Laurentian, but that does not make it less important for me to recognize the efforts you’ve made to get yourselves on to the finish line. And this year, the finish line was probably a little blurrier than you could have imagined. Before, the path was clear, not simple… but clear and distinct. You start your studies, you go to class, you write your tests and exams, you register for your next courses in the sequence, and finally, eventually, you reach the finish line.

But this year, March 11th came, and it was not a March 11th like any other one before at Laurentian. We temporarily suspended face-to-face instruction on campus, and pivoted to remote delivery. For some, that meant packing up their bags and leaving for home, with the eventuality of returning to campus when it was deemed safe to do so. For others, it was the preoccupation of completing a placement, or a project while campus access was not possible. Our faculty, support staff and indeed all students have deployed considerable effort to adjust, to transform this difficult situation into an opportunity. I am extremely proud of the Laurentian community for rallying to ensure the semester could be completed. And since, we’ve persevered and continue to push and advance by offering course and labs remotely.

The Wright Brothers’ Flyer was the first successful heavier-than-air aircraft powered and controlled by a pilot. It flew four times on December 17, 1903, near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. And although the distance travelled – a mere 40 meters – was modest, it was actually a proof-of-concept. Before that day, no one would have suspected that humans could fly… only dreamers did, or mythological figures like Icarus. Today, or rather earlier in 2020, and depending on the source you believe, half a million individuals were in the air at any given instant. No one before December 17, 1903 could fathom that kind of revolution. Today, flying is just as normal as riding a bike to run errands.

A part of your life will now be identified as ‘before’, much as it did for those before us: ‘before the World War’, ‘before September 11th’, ‘before the Wright brothers’, ‘before the web’. The word ‘before’ will trigger a lot of meaning for you. That being said, given that there is a ‘before’, there is, by definition, an ‘after’… ‘after the War’, ‘after 9-11’, ‘after the Wright Brothers’ flight’. But the ‘after’ is not going to look the same as the ‘before’. It has to be that way, or else there would not be a need to speak of a ‘before’. You will no longer take an airplane in the same way as you have in the past. You will not see the importance of social contact in the same way as you have given that you have lived this social distancing and confinement of the past few months. You have made many sacrifices to succeed before this event, and you will continue to do so to make your way a place in this world, a world which might seem slightly less ‘normal’ than ‘before’.

It is clear that with a ‘before’ and an ‘after’, there is a ‘during’ and this ‘during’ is perhaps the most destabilizing. The ‘during’ period is where we have to make the greatest adjustments, it brings the most instability. For many decades, we’ve celebrated the achievements of our graduating class in the same formal way—with pomp, with circumstance and with a series of Latin terms to make the experience that more special. We want the experience to be distinct, unmistakable, and linked to countless ceremonies of ‘before’. Regardless of the ceremony I attended, each one has been special. And while this occasion ‘during’ the COVID crisis is different, it is just as special, distinct, and tied to different ways to experience ceremonies than ‘before’.

While you are entering a world that is very different than what you anticipated a few months ago, the world needs you. I leave you with the following notion… that nothing in life is better than being needed.

I offer you my sincerest congratulations and much success in your future careers.

Aanii, Boozhoo, Kwe Kwe, Félicitations.Avant d’occuper mon poste actuel de vice-recteur intérimaire aux études à la Laurentienne, j’étais secrétaire général, et à ce titre, j’ai vu des milliers d’étudiantes et étudiants monter fièrement sur la scène de l’Auditorium Fraser pour recevoir leur diplôme, et de fiers parents, membres de la famille et amis prendre des photos (leurs propres paparazzi). C’est une occasion spéciale, un moment qui couronne tout le travail assidu et les sacrifices effectués pendant un, deux ou même quinze ans avant d’atteindre votre objectif… obtenir un grade du premier cycle, un deuxième grade universitaire, ou en fin de compte un doctorat, le plus haut diplôme décerné par l’Université Laurentienne.

Avant, je m’amusais à regarder les souliers que les diplômés portaient pour venir chercher leur diplôme. C’était de beaux souliers habillés noirs d’hommes, d’élégantes chaussures à talons hauts, des chaussures de course, des sandales et, pour les diplômées du programme de formation des sages-femmes, les traditionnelles chaussures rouges en tous genres.

J’ai peut-être rencontré seulement un petit nombre d’entre vous pendant vos études à la Laurentienne, mais il n’en reste pas moins qu’il est important que je souligne les efforts que vous avez déployés pour arriver à la ligne d’arrivée. Et cette année, la ligne d’arrivée a probablement été un peu plus floue que vous auriez pu l’imaginer. Avant, le parcours était clair, pas simple, mais clair et distinct. Vous commenciez vos études, vous alliez à vos cours, vous écriviez vos contrôles et examens, vous vous inscriviez à vos prochains cours et, finalement, vous parveniez à la ligne d’arrivée.

Mais cette année, il y a eu le 11 mars, une date comme aucune autre avant à la Laurentienne. Nous avons temporairement suspendu l’enseignement sur le campus, et fait le virage vers l’enseignement à distance. Pour certaines personnes, cela a signifié faire leurs bagages et rentrer chez elles, avec la perspective de revenir sur le campus lorsqu’il sera possible de le faire en toute sécurité. Pour d’autres, c’était la préoccupation de terminer un stage, ou un travail alors qu’il était impossible de venir sur le campus. Notre corps professoral, notre personnel de soutien et en fait toute la population étudiante ont fait des efforts considérables pour s’adapter et transformer cette situation difficile en une possibilité. Je suis extrêmement fier de la communauté de la Laurentienne qui s’est mobilisée afin que le trimestre puisse être achevé. Et depuis, nous avons persévéré et continuons d’aller de l’avant en offrant des cours et des travaux pratiques à distance.

L’aéronef des frères Wright a été le premier avion plus lourd que l’air propulsé et contrôlé par un pilote. Il a volé quatre fois le 17 décembre 1903 près de Kitty Hawk, en Caroline du Nord. Et même si la distance parcourue, tout juste 40 mètres, était modeste, elle a en fait prouvé le concept. Personne avant le 17 décembre 1903 n’aurait imaginé ce type de révolution. Aujourd’hui, voler est aussi normal que prendre son vélo pour aller faire des courses.

Une partie de votre vie sera maintenant appelée « avant », comme cela a été le cas pour nos prédécesseurs : « avant la Guerre mondiale », « avant le 11 septembre », « avant les frères Wright », « avant Internet ». Le mot « avant » aura beaucoup de sens pour vous. Cela dit, étant donné qu’il y a un « avant », par définition, il y a aussi un « après »… « après la Guerre mondiale », « après 911 », « après le vol des frères Wright ». Cependant l’« après » ne ressemblera pas à l’« avant ». Il faut que ce soit ainsi, sinon, il serait inutile de parler d’un « avant ». Vous ne prendrez plus l’avion comme vous le faisiez avant. Vous ne verrez pas l’importance du contact social de la même façon étant donné que vous avez connu la distanciation physique et le confinement ces dernières semaines. Vous avez fait beaucoup de sacrifices pour réussir avant cet événement, et vous continuerez de le faire afin de vous frayer un chemin dans ce monde qui semble un peu moins normal qu’« avant ».

Il est clair qu’avec un « avant » et un « après », il y a un « pendant », et ce « pendant » est peut-être le plus déstabilisant. C’est la période où nous devons faire les plus grandes adaptations et elle apporte le plus d’instabilité. Pendant des décennies, nous avons célébré les succès de nos finissants de la même façon officielle : en grande pompe, solennellement et avec une série de termes latins pour rendre l’expérience encore plus spéciale. Nous voulions que cette expérience se démarque, soit sans équivoque et liée aux innombrables cérémonies d’« avant ». Quelle que soit la cérémonie à laquelle j’ai assisté, chacune était spéciale. Et même si celle-ci, « pendant » la crise de la COVID-19, est différente, elle est tout aussi spéciale, remarquable et liée de différentes façons qu’« avant » à l’expérience des cérémonies.

Même si vous entrez dans un monde très différent de celui auquel vous vous attendiez il y a quelques mois, ce monde a besoin de vous. Je vous laisse sur cette pensée : il n’y a rien de mieux dans la vie que d’être nécessaire.

Je vous félicite sincèrement et vous souhaite le plus grand succès dans votre future carrière.

De la part de mes collègues, doyens et doyennes, du corps professoral et du personnel de soutien qui ont rendu votre parcours possible, je vous souhaite le meilleur pour l’avenir. Félicitations.

Chancellor of Laurentian University

Steve Paikin is the host of TVO’s flagship current affairs program, The Agenda with Steve Paikin, the gold standard for in depth of analysis and thoughtful debate in Canadian media. In more than 35 years in the business, Steve has built a sterling reputation as an eminently fair journalist, who has moderated federal and Ontario election debates. Earlier in his career, Steve worked at CBC News as an anchor and correspondent, a reporter for the Hamilton Spectator and CHFI radio, as well as radio and television stations in Boston. Steve has authored seven books including his latest, Bill Davis: Nation Builder, and Not So Bland After All, has produced several feature-length documentaries, and reported from two different war zones. In October 2013, Steve became an educational ambassador and was appointed Chancellor of Laurentian University in Sudbury. He was re-appointed in 2018. He is also a distinguished visiting professor at Ryerson University in Toronto. Steve has honorary degrees from Laurentian, Victoria University at the University of Toronto, McMaster University in Hamilton, and York University. He also has honorary diplomas from Humber, Centennial, and Mohawk Colleges. In December of 2013, Steve was made an Officer of the Order of Canada for his contributions as a journalist who engages, informs and educates viewers on a broad range of public policy issues, and was invested into the Order of Ontario in 2014.Steve was born in Hamilton, Ontario and lives in Toronto.

Chancellor of Laurentian UniversityThe Chancellor of the University is a volunteer appointed by the Board of Governors. The Chancellor is the titular and ceremonial head of the University and assists the University in its advocacy, advancement activities, and national recognition efforts. Without limiting the generality of the foregoing, the Chancellor of Laurentian University will:

• Act as an ambassador for the University;• Preside over Convocation and confer degrees;• Serve as a member of the Board of Governors;• Participate in, or preside over, ceremonial or other important events on campus;• Represent the University in an official capacity at external functions from time to time;• Perform a strong leadership role on behalf of the University;• Engage in profile-raising activities;• Assist in advancement activities (friend-raising and fund-raising);• Advocate directly, or through a network of connections, for the post-secondary system,

Convocation is an impressive ceremony, steeped in dignity and decorum, which is conducted according to long-standing traditions. The colourful academic regalia – caps, gowns, and hoods – worn by teaching and administrative staff are a legacy from medieval universities such as Paris, Bologna, Oxford, and Cambridge. They indicate the university from which its bearer graduated and the highest degree awarded to that person. Most of the distinctive characteristics appear in the hood. Originally a practical element of dress, the hood has evolved into a separate and purely ornamental article, draped over the shoulder and down the back. The hoods worn by graduands are either bordered or lined with colours that indicate the degree to be conferred.

The undergraduate academic hoods are crafted in Laurentian University’s blue and gold, with a colour border corresponding to the program of study:

La vie universitaire est ponctuée de rites dont celui de la collation des grades. Celle-ci est une cérémonie impressionnante, empreinte de dignité et de décorum, qui se déroule selon des traditions anciennes. Les atours académiques colorés – toques, toges et épitoges – que revêtent les membres des corps professoral et administratif sont un héritage de l’époque médiévale, plus précisément d’universités telles que celles de Paris, de Bologne, d’Oxford et de Cambridge. Ces vêtements sont aux couleurs de l’université fréquentée par ces personnes ainsi qu’à celles du grade le plus élevé qui leur a été conféré. Les caractéristiques les plus particulières se trouvent sur l’épitoge. À l’origine un élément pratique de la tenue vestimentaire, l’épitoge est devenue un article séparé, purement ornemental, drapé autour des épaules, qui pend dans le dos. Les épitoges portées par les diplômés ont soit une bordure soit une doublure de couleur qui indique le grade qui leur est conféré.

The Mace is a symbol of authority and guidance. It is shouldered by the Macebearer who, clothed in a specially designed gown, leads the procession of graduands, faculty, members of the Board of Governors, special guests, the Chancellor, and the President and Vice-Chancellor, into the auditorium to participate in the Convocation ceremony. When the entire procession has entered, the Mace is placed on a designated pedestal before the Chancellor, at the front of the stage. It remains there until the closure of the Convocation ceremony, at which time it is borne again by the Macebearer who leads the Convocation procession out of the auditorium.

Laurentian’s Mace was designed by Dora de Pedery-Hunt. It was crafted from Sudbury metals – copper and nickel – and adorned with golden studs, representing strength and power. The University’s crest is engraved at the tip of the shaft. This gift from The Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire (IODE), Elizabeth Fry Chapter, was presented to the University at their annual dinner on May 17, 1966.

La Masse est un symbole d’autorité et de gouverne. Elle est portée par le massier qui, revêtu d’une toge spécialement conçue, mène à l’intérieur de l’auditorium le cortège formé des diplômés, du corps professoral, des membres du Conseil des gouverneurs, des invités spéciaux, du chancelier et du recteur et vice-chancelier pour participer à la cérémonie de la collation des grades. Lorsque le cortège entier a fait son entrée, la Masse est déposée à l’avant de la scène, devant le chancelier, sur un socle destiné à cet effet. Elle y demeure jusqu’à la fin de la cérémonie, moment auquel le massier la reprend pour conduire le cortège à l’extérieur de l’auditorium.

La Masse de l’Université Laurentienne est l’oeuvre de Dora de Pedery-Hunt. Elle a été confectionnée à partir de métaux trouvés dans la région de Sudbury – le cuivre et le nickel – et ornée de cloutages dorés qui représentent la force et le pouvoir. L’écusson de l’Université est gravé au bout du manche de la Masse. Ce cadeau de l’Ordre impérial des filles de l’Empire, section Elizabeth Fry, a été présenté à l’Université lors du banquet annuel de l’Ordre tenu le 17 mai 1966.
