CHOIR | DANCE | INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC | TALON THEATRE

Welcome! I hope you are ready for another fantastic performance by one of our very talented performing arts programs! Thank you for attending and supporting the arts at SMCHS. The students enrolled in the SMCHS performing arts program are quite talented young men and women, and we are blessed that they are on the Eagle stage. Our students are guided and mentored by a premier group of dedicated and talented faculty. As principal, I am immensely proud of the young men and women and their teachers and leaders. The arts are an integral part of a high school student’s life and every student can benefit from their participation in many academic and social/emotional ways. Whether they are in instrumental music, choir, dance, theatre, handbells, tech crew or Comedy Sportz, the opportunities create balance in their school experience.

Our Lord, through the love of Christ, has greatly blessed us with a faculty and staff who teach, inspire, and lead these young men and women. Often, they are helping many of them prepare for a career in the arts. St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, our patroness, stated:

“Go courageously to God, along the way He has traced out for you, steadfastly embracing the means He offers you.”

These students are utilizing their extraordinary gifts and talents, and we celebrate them and their courage to share them with us. In every performance the SMCHS Performing Arts Department lives the charism of our school, Caritas Christi, the love of Christ. It is with gratitude to our gracious God for the great gift of these students and educators and for you, the wonderful supporters of this program, who join us today.

Caritas Christi, Cheri L. Wood, Principal

On behalf of the Performing Arts Department, I would like to thank you for choosing Santa Margarita Catholic High School and for supporting the performing arts. Your children are a gift; they are the heart and soul of the performance you are about to experience. Thank you for being here to witness and support the extraordinary efforts of these incredibly dedicated and talented people. Every live performance needs an audience and we are extremely grateful for your presence. SMCHS is proud to be the premier Catholic high school in South Orange County. Even though the previous season was unique, the Performing Arts Department was committed to live performances. When the time was right, we seized the opportunity to perform. Once again, SMCHS performances were commensurate with the finest arts education institutions offered in Orange County, and this year will be no exception.

We are extremely proud to present the 2021-22 season. This season will surely demonstrate a newfound sense of appreciation for the artistry, talent, and excellence that is customary for SMCHS performing arts. It is this sense of pride, accomplishment, excellence, and community support for continued growth that inspired the creation of this program cover. Thank you to our sponsors for their generous contributions. Your gift has a direct impact on the entire Performing Arts Department. Thanks to your partnership, we are able to provide students with opportunities they would not have otherwise. The possibilities are abundant. No matter what you give, the application of your gift goes directly toward student learning experiences. Sponsorships will be printed each year, and I encourage you to be a part of the growth of SMCHS performing arts. Your support and commitment have helped our program evolve to this level of excellence. I look forward to this ongoing partnership. The real benefactors are the young performers who bring their talents to the stage for our student body, school parents and the entire community. So whether you are passionate about dance, choir, handbells, theatre, steel drums, guitar, orchestra, band, eagle regiment, color guard, improv or jazz band – thank you for your partnership in valuing and supporting performing arts. Sincerely, Francisco Calvo Director of Performing Arts, Performing Arts Department Chair and Director of Vocal Music

We’re back! Welcome to another exceptional presentation by the Santa Margarita Catholic High School Performing Arts Department! Performing arts inspire and unify us in a fashion that embodies the God-given talent of our students, faculty and staff. Together, our passionate, dedicated and talented performing arts team foster love, enthusiasm and respect for the arts. In turn, these unique attributes provide the foundation of a memorable experience for which you are about to witness.

“Art is an experience, not an object.” – Robert Motherwell

Bravo to all of our patrons and benefactors for the countless ways in which they enhance our performing arts programs by way of generosity of time, treasure and talent. To our Eagle parents and families, thank you for entrusting SMCHS with

your most precious gift – your children. We are honored to partner with you in their education and look forward to your continued involvement and support. I invite you now to sit back and enjoy tonight’s outstanding performance!

STEEL DRUMS ENSEMBLES

7+($57,676

352*5$0127(6 WIND ENSEMBLE Summon the Heroes - Once again, John Williams was asked to compose a work for the Olympics, and this thrilling composition is the result. Part of Summon the Heroes was selected as the official theme of the 100th Anniversary of the Olympics, and literally millions of people all over the world heard the theme throughout the 1996 Summer Games. This powerful arrangement includes the five major sections of the work: Fanfare; Prologue; Flags; Contest and Parade.

Armed Forces Medley - It is a tradition for military bands in the United States to perform a medley of the service songs of the U.S. Armed Forces. Each service has its own version of this medley, and during performances audience members who have served (or whose family members have served) will stand and sing when their service’s song is played. This medley begins with “The Army Goes Rolling Along”, followed with “Marines Hymn”, the Navy’s March “Anchors Aweigh”, The Air Force Song, and closing with the Coat Guards “Semper Paratus.” We welcome anyone who has served or has family members who have served to stand during their branches march and be recognized! ORCHESTRA PERIOD 2 Ashokan Farewell - This gorgeous melody became famous as part of the soundtrack to the PBS television mini-series The Civil War. Composed by Jay Ungar for solo fiddle, the instrumentation can vary. Though it is usually played with guitar and bass accompaniment, it has been skillfully arranged for full orchestra with violin soloist by Calvin Custer.

Viola Rampage – The viola; the unsung hero of the orchestra. Rarely mentioned, a good viola section is essential to the success of any orchestra. In Viola Rampage, the violas seize the spotlight and demand to be heard! The conflict rages as the violas' aggressive B minor main theme contrast with the soaring D major theme played by the violins. Who will emerge victorious in this epic battle for orchestral domi-nance? ORCHESTRA PERIOD 1 Theme from “Schindlers List” - Schindler's List is a 1993 American epic historical period drama film, di-rected and co produced by Steven Spielberg and scripted by Steven Zaillian. It is based on the novel Schindler's Ark by Thomas Keneally, an Australian novelist. The film is based on the life of Oskar Schindler, an ethnic Ger-man businessman who saved the lives of more than a thousand mostly Polish-Jewish refugees during the Holocaust by employing them in his factories. The exquisite musical score for Schindler's List won an unprecedented fifth Oscar for composer John Williams. Famed violinist Itzhak Perlman performed the solos for the soundtrack.

Music from “Incredibles 2” - Follow the story of an "incredible" family of crime fighters along with their flashy music written in the campy style of a mid-1960s spy thriller. The work includes the themes "Consider Yourselves Undermined," "Train of Taut," "Elastigirl's Got a Plane to Catch," "Hero Wor-ship," and "Ambassador Ambush."

352*5$0127(6 SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Fanfare for the Common Man - From the concert stage to the gridiron halftime show, the Montreal Olym-pics and television commercials, Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man has challenged performers and excited listeners. The score was written in 1943 "for the common man, who, after all, was doing all the dirty work in the war and in the army. He deserved a fanfare." Copland later used it as an integral part of his Third Symphony. Written originally as part of a multi composer commission, the works were not only to enrich the literature for brass and percussion but to pay tribute to all those involved in World War II. The titles were selected by the composers them-selves, and it is not surprising that Aaron Copland should have chosen to do honor to the man who per-forms no deeds of heroism on the battlefield but who shares the labors, sorrows, and hopes of those who strive for victory.

Superman Returns - Few fictional characters have been as prolific in mainstream entertainment as the Man of Steel. From the original comic stories in the 1930s to the Clayton Collyer radio show and Para-mount’s animated shorts in the '40s, the Kirk Alyn television shows of the '50s, the musical adaptation for theatre and George Reeves series of the '60s, the feature films of the '70s and '80s, the television spin-offs of the '90s and '00s, and finally, a resurrection to the big screen in 2006, the legend of Super-man has thrived for more than 60 years. This arrangement is based off of the 2006 production “Superman Returns,” including original music from both John Williams and John Ottman. This medley includes Superman Theme, Can You Read My Mind? (Love Theme from Superman), Memories, and Rough Flight. STEEL DRUMS As director of the Steel Drums program, I am often asked by my students, especially my graduating seniors, “How can I keep playing steel drums (pan) after I leave Santa Margarita?” Unlike students in band, orchestra, and choir classes, it’s not easy for a pan player to find a college or university with a pan program. While the growth of steel pan in the United States over the last fifty years is intrinsically linked to collegiate-level groups, the instrument is still considered by many in higher education to be niche or a novelty at best, or, at worst, not “prestigious” enough to be included in a university setting (not true!). So to answer this question, I decided to begin a group project this semester as a way for the students to learn how to play steel pan in a small band, with the hopes that they would finish this journey inspired to start their own groups after leaving our program. All the students worked on their own pieces in groups, and you’ll hear most of these pieces tonight. While I gave the students guidance on arranging, instrumentation, grooves, etc., most, if not all, of the musical decisions were made by the students themselves. Except for four full band-pieces, all the music you will hear tonight was selected by the students. I’m proud of each of the students and their hard work. Enjoy the concert!
