Saul Bass: Early Life.Born: May 8, 1920Died: April 25, 1996Bass was born in New York to Eastern European Jewish immigrant parents. Graduated from James Monroe High in the Bronx, studied part-time at the Art Students League. Attended Brooklyn College upon graduating from James Monroe High School. Began working in Hollywood during 1940’s, doing print work for films ads. Bass,whose first marriage ended in divorce, hired Elaine Makatura as his first employee; they were married in 1961.

Started going into film poster making when he collaborated with filmmaker Otto Preminger, designed a film poster for the 1954 film, Carmen Jones.

Preminger was impressed with Bass’ work that he asked him to produced the title sequence as well.

Bass became quickly known in the film industry after creating the title sequence for Preminger’s film: The Man with the Golden Arm. (1955.)

In 1960, Saul Bass also created movie poster and title sequence for movie: Exodus.

Other films and title sequences that he did were: Edge of the City, Storm Center, Love in the Afternoon, Saint Joan, Bonjour Tristesse, The Big Country, Vertigo, Anatomy of a Murder, Schlinder’s List, The Shining, Very Happy Alexander and many more to name.

Bass is also well-known for creating some of the best-remembered, most iconic logos of North America, ranging from AT&T to United Airlines.

The Bell Telephone logo was created by Bass in 1969, then later turned into what is known as the AT&T Globe.

In 1969, Bass also designed a logo for Quaker Oats company. To this day, the logo is still used corporately.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of America logo was also designed by Bass, but in 1978.

Other logos that Saul Bass created within his career are: Alcoa, Avery International, Celanese, Dixie, Frontier Airlines, General Foods, Girl Scouts of the USA, Lawry’s Foods, Quaker Oats, United Airlines and Wienerschnitzel.

Saul Bass: Death

Saul Bass passed away on April 25, 1996 in Los Angeles, California. The cause of death was non-Hodgkins lymphoma. ( The source was family.)
