Idea / Concept
Over 70 per cent of the earth’s surface is covered by oceans and seas. The greater part of this area is still unexplored but will provide important resources for future generations. Indeed, researching the seas is now regarded as a major scientific and technical challenge. Taking this situation as starting point, the interactive exhibition presents the latest insights and impressions from the world of oceanography. The individual exhibition modules are comprised as follows:
1. Life in the Sea
Life in the North Sea and the Baltic! This module shows visitors live creatures from the sea and explains their individual modes of existence.
2. Diversity and Evolution
What forms of life are to be found in the ocean? This module has two functions: to present a part of the species’ diversity and to demonstrate the processes of evolution with concrete examples.
3. Mankind and the Sea
Coastal regions are utilised intensively – in fact, half of the entire world’s population lives less than 60 kilometres from the sea. The exhibition shows that coastal regions are subject to highly dynamic change.
4. Diving to the Deeps
This module brings to life the fascination associated with researching deep sea regions and highlights the relevance of ongoing research activities in this area.

5. The Adventure of Deep Sea Research
Penetrating the depths of the sea requires the latest in technology as well as international cooperation. This module provides insights into the many methods now being applied.
6. Sand and Sediments
The role of the ocean in global and regional climate development is undisputed. This module shows the mechanisms involved in sedimentation and explains which micro-organisms are used by scientists to understand and predict climate development. It also presents examples of important sediment cores that point to dramatic climate changes.
7. Dynamics of the Earth
The Earth is comprised of a planetary core at its centre, a mantle formed partly of molten rocks and the earth’s crust at the surface. This crust is formed by continental plates that move over the upper earth’s mantle. These movements are powered by convection currents in the upper mantle that cause some of the plates to drift apart and bring other plates onto a collision course. These highly dynamic processes create mountain chains, fascinating volcanoes on land and under the oceans, and cause new continental plates to be formed.
