WHAT I LEARNED IN PR

PRACTICUMBy: Lindsay Coonrod

RESUME WRITING Proper format/style How to write an appropriate cover letter for the job in which you are applying

What kind of jobs/experience should and shouldn’t be included

What to write for the objective that makes you seem like you are ready for the real world

INFORMATIONAL INTERVIEW Writing in the PR field is

paramount and the most critical aspect of the career

3 tips for a recent PR grad: Network, Intern, Repeat

Graphic design is one thing they wished they focused more on

Keep your resume concise and relevant because it is the first impression that companies will have of you

LINKEDIN I did not know anything about LinkedIn until this class

I think that it will be very helpful for my career because of the people who I can connect myself with

I like how LinkedIn allows you to post your resume as is and it formats it for you

JOB SEARCHING Proper etiquette to have when in the

company of potentially important people

With the mock interview I learned the important of appearance, confidence, and the over all way you conduct yourself

Sending a handwritten thank you letter after the interview is very important

Make sure your resume is neatly printed on watermark paper and send it out in the proper envelope

WHAT NOT TO WEAR

PROPER DRESS I learned what kind of clothing is

appropriate during an interview and also at work

Here are some examples:

PORTFOLIO Make sure your portfolio is in a

presentable folder Have 3-5 of your best/favorite

works inside for the interviewee to look at if they choose to do so

Make sure to create a leave behind with 2 of your best pieces from your portfolio inside

TRADE BOOK: THE STRUCTURAL TRANSFORMATION OF THE PUBLIC

SPHERE The public sphere represented

“public opinion” Public sphere – the sphere of

private people how came together and formed a public

The public sphere is both a social reality with a history, and a theoretical concept

The author traces the history of the separation between public and private in language and philosophy

This book did not directly help me when it comes to my future in PR but it was a very interesting history lesson

OVERALL This class has just furthered my interest in PR

and made me excited to get out there and job search once I graduate

I have learned all of the right things to do during an interview, what to have in my resume and portfolio, what to wear, proper etiquette, etc.
