Classification

We have been involved with the classification of yachts for more than 150 years.

We provide assistance at every stage, from concept development, through design and construction to operation.

At all times we help ensure that the yacht complies with construction and safety standards, while allowing the flexibility to create a vessel which achieves your expectations. www.lr.org/class

Special Service Craft Rules and software

Lloyd’s Register’s Rules and Regulations for the Classification of Special Service Craft (SSC Rules) set standards for the design and construction of sailing and motor yachts over 24 metres.

We constantly revise the Rules to take account of the latest statutory and technical developments.

Our SSC software enables you to assess your design against the Rules, helping you save time and cost at the initial design stage.

Classification

Certification

As a recognised organisation, we verify compliance with international Conventions and Codes, including:

– LY2 and Passenger Yacht Code

– SOLAS

– MARPOL

– ISM and ISPS Codes

Our notified body, LRQA GmbH, also provides certification to the Recreational Craft Directive.

ILO Maritime Labour Convention– preparing for compliance The Maritime Labour Convention (MLC, 2006) sets standards for seafarers’ living and working conditions, on issues such as accommodation, health and safety, and medical care.

Through our voluntary assessment, gap analysis and training services we can help you assess your compliance and prepare for entry into force.

Certification

Port state control guidance

The new port state control (PSC) inspection regime, ‘THETIS’, means that commercial and private yachts will be subject to more frequent inspections within the Paris MOU region.

Our port state control pocket checklists will help you prepare for inspections and reduce the risk of detention.

Certification

Training

We provide yacht-specific training on classification and statutory requirements.

This can be tailored to your needs and held at a location to suit you.

Environmental services

Our environmental products and services help you operate your yacht more efficiently and reduce its impact on the environment.

Environmental protection (EP) notation: a class notation which helps you demonstrate your environmental credentials

Green Passport: Inventory of Hazardous Materials approval and verification for yachts under construction and in service

Exhaust emissions services: guidance on fuels, exhaust emission abatement technologies and demonstrating compliance

Ballast water management: approval of management plans, and guidance on selection and installation

Consultancy services

Practical solutions that help you understand the risks to your business and improve performance beyond basic compliance.

FOBAS: fuel analysis, engine performance optimisation and SOx and NOx exhaust emissions abatement technology

Ship emergency response service: fast and effective incident response 24 hours a day

Alternative design and arrangements: covering fire and safety; LSA life-saving appliances and arrangements; and machinery and electrics.

Comfort and reliability

Lloyd’s Register ODS is setting new standards indeveloping services to improve the comfort andreliability of yachts.

From verification of your design, through sea trial to in-service support, we can help you minimise the risk of failure and optimise comfort for crew, charterers and guests.

Design verification

Any new build, re-build or conversion project can be compromised by unexpected design issues, such as poor manufacturing or unmet building specifications.

We can verify your chosen design solution, however novel, helping minimise the impact of these risks.

Our guidance and support help ensure your project is delivered on time and according to expectations.

Sea trials

We offer a range of services during commissioning and sea trials to help lower technical risk, improve performance and reduce delay in delivery.

During sea trials, we monitor and measurea wide range of areas, including noise and vibration, structural behaviour, hull performance, machinery vibration and propeller cavitation.

If problems are identified, we move quicklyfrom diagnosis to practical solutions.

Consultancy services from Lloyd’s Register ODS

Noise and vibration

We offer market leading expertise withinnoise and vibration control engineering.

Using state-of-the-art analysis tools, we helpselect the most appropriate measures for thecomfort of passengers and crew, includingstructural stiffening, sound insulation, floating floors, damping layers and silencers.

When noise and vibration problems occur,we provide troubleshooting services to helpidentify the cause.

Hydrodynamic performance

We can help optimise the hydrodynamic performance of your yacht.

We provide design analysis using cutting edge computational fluid dynamics code, witnessing of model tests, and full-scale measurements and observations.

When in-service problems occur, we recommend solutions to help minimise the risk of recurrence, providing advice on hull and propeller blade modification and profiling, and other vibration mitigation measures.

Structural and machinery integrity

Early warning of fatigue and stress corrosion helpsyou make informed decisions about maintenance, repair or replacement.

We use a combination of tools and techniquesto investigate structural and machinery integrity, including acceleration, velocity and displacementsensors, acoustic emission monitoring and straingauge equipment.

Solutions are developed using state-of-the-art finite element software.

Failure investigation

We can help minimise the risk and impacts of structural or mechanical failure through fast diagnosis, effective corrective action and reliable preventative measures.

Investigation is based on review of witness testimonies, design appraisal and our own field measurements, drawing on the experience of experts and operators.

Cost-effective corrective and preventativeactions are negotiated closely with all parties.
