Do Now:Must • Write down one reason why you would

NOT go to war.

Should• Write down one reason why you would

go to war.

Could• When do you think NZ should get

involved in other country’s wars?

Learning Intention:

Students will be able to describe why New Zealand was involved in WWI.

Task 1:

Must • Which country(ies) would you fight for

in a war?

Should• Why would you help this(ese) country?

Could• How do you think this could be similar

to New Zealand men in 1914?

Task 2:

MUSTRead each of the values positions and in no more than 5 words, summarise why men from NZ went to war.

Write the person’s name as well.

Opinion One:Great Britain has declared war on

Germany. New Zealand is a loyal dominion of the British and we support Britain in this war.

Earl of Liverpool, Governor General of New Zealand

Opinion Two:It was a mix of patriotism and

adventure. I was always interested in battles, deeds that won the Empire. There was not the doubt and questioning that we have now. We were more simple-minded I think. We used to look at the map and see all the red areas (of the British Empire).

Dan Curham, Wellington Infantry Battalion

Opinion Three:I had been living with my step mother

and she didn’t suit me so good so I thought it would be an opportunity to make a break – I’ll go to war.

Henry Lewis, Otago Infantry Battalion

Opinion Four:I went down to Auckland and joined up. I

suppose you could say I was looking for adventure. Today people would say were brainwashed with patriotism. Britannia Rules the Waves on our side and Deutschland Uber Allies on the other. And now go out and kill each other.

Tony Fagan, Auckland Infantry Battalion

Opinion Five:I had a number of mates who were

rugby men and that sort of thing and pals, I knew they’d all want to go. So we got in and the whole of us went together.

Joe Gasparich, Auckland Infantry Battalion.

Task 3:1. What do you think Patriotism is?

2. How do New Zealanders show Patriotism today?

3. Who was New Zealand being Patriotic to by joining WWI?

4. Why was this the case?

5. Do you think this would be the case today?

6. Which person has a similar reason to you? Why?

7. How do you show Patriotism to your homeland?

Task 4:

a. Add these values to the continuum below: - 1914 soldier (WWI) - Soldier today of British decent - Soldier today of non-British decent - Add yourself
