- 2. Mise en scene When looking at the mise en scene with in this
video we can see that there is a lot of fire this is because it
links with the lyrics just going to stand there and watch me burn
it also gives out the idea of being in pain and fading into nothing
it also may give out the idea that the guy is dangerous as fire
connotatates this idea of danger. When pointing out the idea of
fire the first thing I can point out about fire is the fact that in
the background when Rihanna is singing there is a burning building
behind her this creates the idea that her world is falling down and
she is in danger and it also links with the fact that she is
singing just going to stand there and watch me burn when looking at
the element of fire we can see that the actress with in the music
video is made to be holding fire in her hand this gives out the
idea that she is in control of the fire at the moment but without
her control everything could burn away this kind of links to the
idea that she is in control of the relationship with man but she
knows that things could go wrong within a matter of seconds. When
looking at Rihanna who is a popular artist who features with in
this video we can see when looking at her hair that it is red this
gives out the idea that she is in danger as red is symbolic to
danger alike to the fire that is behind her. We can also see that
she has dark make up around her eyes and is wearing relatively dark
clothing this gives out the idea that she is in a negative place
and automatilcally allows the audience to understand that this is a
negative song as well as a negative music video. When looking at
Eminem who is the main artist featured with in this song and is
rapping when looking at Eminem we can see that he is in a field by
himself with nobody around this gives out the idea that he needed
space from there relationship to think and to be alone, or needed
to be away for her so that the fire (himself) didnt destroy the
both of them. The fact that he is in a field by himself gives out
the idea that he is lost, which makes the audience feel as if he
feels lost with in there relationship. When looking at the couple
at first we can see that they are both in bed and we are unaware of
any problems with in there relationship, the bed quilt also has
white covers which gives out this idea of purity and innocence with
in there relationship which has the effect of misleading the
audience with in there understanding and will also make them
surprised with the following actions which are displayed with in
the narrative. When looking at the scene when they are in the bed
there is a big clue that uses mise en scene with in the narrative
to show the audience that something isnt right with in the
relationship and that is that the man has a girls name on his hand
with her number on it written in pen which the women sees, the fact
that the pen is black gives out negative connotations which dark
colours usually do. When looking at the mise en scene when Rihanna
is singing next in the music video we can see that she has a black
hood up this creates negative connotations with in the music video
as dark colours usually symbolise negative things when looking at
the fact that she has got her hood up it creates this gansta like
feel which makes her look fearless and not afraid of anything and
almost like she is going to do something bad, this goes with
narratives of the actors with in the music video as the girl is
hitting the man that she is with and is not afraid of the
consequences. When looking at eminem singing in the field there is
light that shows on the camera this gives out the idea that even
though things are bad which is shown through the narrative of there
relationship and also the lyrics there is also light with in there
relationship and that is why they dont give up on it. When looking
at the narrative portrayed by the actors with in the music video we
can see that the man goes to punch the women but then hits the wall
the fact that he hits the wall shows that he is angry at her but
loves her too much to hurt her and even though he is being
aggressive he doesnt want to do real damage he is just angry. Also
when looking at the narrative we can see that there is light coming
through the window which gives out this idea that even though they
are beating up each other there is still positives with in there
relationship and there is a possibility that things will get better
for them both. When looking at the mise en scene we can see that
one minute they are fighting and then the next they are being
affectionate this gives out the idea that they hate each other and
are angry at each other but love each other at the same time but
cant keep there hands of each other. When looking at Rihanna we can
also see that she has got red nails which she keeps on putting on
her head, the fact that she is putting them on her head gives out
this idea that she is fed up angry and the fact that she has red
nails also is symbolic to this idea of danger. When looking at the
male actor when he is on his own on the sofa we can see that on the
table there are beers that have been drank this gives out the idea
that the problems between the couple has led the man to assuasive
drinking which goes with the idea of drinking your problems away
when looking at this music video it has made me realise that mise
en scene plays such an important part in making a music video
especially when creating a story with in the music video it helps
the audience create understanding of what is going on. I never knew
what an important part basic and simplistic things such as colour
and lighting had on the impact of knowing what is going on in the
story or the thoughts and feelings of others. When making my own
video I am definitely going to look at mise en scene more
carefully.
- 3. Cinematography When looking at the shots used with in this
video we can see that there are close ups, close ups are mostly
used to show specific things about objects and people for example
in objects it shows specific detail which then may give you a clue
about the narrative or in people it can show their emotions which
will give you an idea if they are either happy or sad which also
links to the idea of what kind of narrative it is. The close ups in
this narrative are mainly used to show Rihannas emotions which is
like what I said before to show specific emotion, when looking at
Rihanna we can clearly see that she is sad from looking at both her
eyes and her the way she is singing the song this is because the
story is a sad one as she is getting hurt by someone this makes the
story of her getting hurt become clear as she clearly looks sad
this will make the reader feel sympathy towards Rihanna and feel
emotional for her and want to help her get through it, it may also
create relief from the audience that they are not going through
what she is going through and make them feel happy and appreciative
of everything they have it may also make some parts of the audience
relate as they might be going through the same thing as she is
going through which will make them feel sad and lost but also make
them feel happy as they will feel everyone goes through the same
thing and that they are not alone and even celebrities go through
it which will also make them feel a sense of relief. When looking
at the close ups of Rihanna I can also see another emotion coming
through and I think this is a sense of strength and fierceness this
creates this is shown through her emotion with the use of close ups
this creates the idea that she is strong enough to get through what
she is getting through and that she is fighting, this creates this
whole idea of Rihanna as an a person as a role model as she has
represented herself as a strong feisty women who can get through
anything this is good for the audience to look up to as ig they are
in the same position as her in the video they might want to be like
Rihanna who is strong and can get through it and fight through it
which will make them think if she can do it then so can i. It also
might make people prepared for situations like this and make them
become a stronger person for the fact that they want to copy a
celebrity. The fact that she is being fierce and not always sad
links with the lyrics as she says I love the way you lie so she
gets some kind of thrill from the fact that she is getting hurt by
him and she isn't going to let him know that he is hurting her.
When looking at Rihanna we can also look at another shot that has
been used when featuring her this is a medium close up this shot
has been used to show rihanna as well as some of the background,
the fact that the background is showing is really effective as it
is a house burning down showing that her whole life is getting
ruined and it also links with the lyrics just going to stand there
and watch me burn the fact that they have used a medium close up is
really effective as it allows the two features of the background
and her to be in one shot which is good because they link and go
together and shows what is happening to her by using the emotions
on her face as well as a symbol of her emotions, it also looks very
effective with the colours used. When looking at the medium close
ups used we can see that rather than the close ups used it shows
more of Rihannas body which is sexualising her which is common for
a video that includes her as she usually likes to show of her body
and make herself a sex appeal this makes the video more appealing
to boys and make them more likely to watch the video in the first
place. When looking at a girls point of view they may think that it
is idealising and want to be like her and have her body and they
may think its good that she is proud of what she has got and that
she is so confident others may see it in a more negative way as the
song is meant to be an emotional song about deep througts and
showing of her body ruins that as it creates a distraction from the
audience they also might think that it is portraying women in a
negative way and making them out to be sexual objects. When looking
at Eminem we can see that long shots are being used when he is
singing in the field this is may be because he is moving about a
lot and making lots of actions which his hands which is usual for a
rapper to do when he is rapping, long shots are usually used to
establish the scene which is important in the shots of eniminem as
the field Is really big and he is the only one on it creates the
idea that he is lost and by himself even though he is in a
relationship with someone it also creates the idea that hed rather
be alone with nothing and nobody than be with the girl that is
hurting him the field is a sort of escapism this links with the
lyrics he sings. The fact that a long shot has been used when he is
singing may also be because he doesnt have any emotions or doesnt
want to appear to have any emotions this may be to create his whole
representation as tough and strong and that nothing could ever hurt
him. When looking at the women and the man fighting we can see that
medium close ups are used this is to show all the actions that they
are doing which is mainly fighting which is important as it shows
there disconnection and links with the song lyrics that have been
used also when looking at the actors we can see that close ups are
sometimes used especially on the women to show that the
relationship is destroying her and she is angry this shot is also
used on the man to show that he is angry which can scare the
audience, they also use close ups on some objects such as the mans
hand which has someone's phone number on to indicate he is talking
to other girls. When looking at cinematography have realised how
much of an impact that shots have on the way that a video is
portrayed.
- 4. Ideology The ideology used within this music video is quite
serious it is about the idea of an abusive relationship that you
cant get out of which does actually happen in real life. This gives
out a negative image of relationships that they are bad things to
be in and they only cause pain and could put people of being in
relationships. It creates a bad image of both women and men as they
are both being abusive to each other it creates this idea that
people in society are aggressive and the only way we know how solve
things is by fighting. It also creates the idea that men and women
have equal strength which is not usually the ideology that is given
out but it is shown through the fact that they are both being
equally aggressive when fighting . It creates the idea of people
being to weak to get out of relationships and that you are trapped
in them as they are both clearly unhappy in the relationship yet
they dont leave they just stay which creates an ideology of them
being weak even though they are being aggressive. These ideologies
aren't always true in society as it is possible to get out of
abusive relationships not everyone stays or gets a thrill out of
it, the ideology of abusive relationships arent always true as
some/most relationships are hopefully not abusive. It is also not
true that both would be equally dominant it is possible that one
could be more aggressive than the other .

stage name Eminem, is an American rapper, record producer,
songwriter, and actor. In addition to his solo career, Eminem is a
member of the group D12, as well as one half of the hip hop duo Bad
Meets Evil. He has been in the industry for a long time and is very
popular for the variety of things he does. This video represents
him as an institution it represents him as aggressive, emotional
and in love. Eminem has his own label shady records.
- 6. Institution Robyn Rihanna Fenty, known by her stage name
Rihanna] is a Barbadian singer, actress, and fashion designer who
has been in the institution since the early 2000s. This video
creates an institution of Rihanna this is emotional, hurt, confused
and in love. Rihanna is owned by Def Jam.
- 7. Audience The audience will mainly be teenagers who are both
fans of Rihanna and Eminem I expect that the fans of Rihanna are
mainly girls as she discusses boy and love in her music which is
something girls are more likely to be associated to and relate to
and then Eminem could either be girls or boys mainly boys for the
fact that rapping is usually associated with boys but girls could
relate to some of the stuff he talks about such as relationships in
this video. When looking at the audience it doesnt just have to be
people who are fans of them as artists it could easily be someone
who is a fan of Eminems movies that he has been in or the Rihannas
fashion show because they are fans of the specific things they do
then they could be fans of the music. When looking at the song it
is about abusive relationship so it could either be females or
males who can relate to this song as they are both being abusive to
each other and both genders can relate to relationships however I
feel that it is more likely that it will be girls due to the fact
that girls are more likely to feel more emotions or show their
emotions for relationships and heartbreaks.

in this video as they are both equally aggressive both the man and
women. They have also been represented as weak as even though they
are in a bad relationship they are staying in it which could be
seen as weak for the man. They have also been represented as
emotional shown by the emotion on Rihanna's face . It also
represents that women are treated badly by men when looking at the
fact that he has a girls number on his hand etc. It also gives out
the representation of women actually enjoying being treated really
bad Men Men have been made as equal to women in this video as they
have both been equally aggressive which could make men weak and
less dominant. They have also been represented as weak when looking
at the fact that they he is in an abusive relationship but they
wont do anything about the situation. It also represents that men
treat girls bad not only through being aggressive but the fact that
he has a girls number on his hand. It also represents that they
enjoy being in an abusive relationship and being treated
badly.
