Downloading eBooks to your Kindle

Using OverDrive with the Alachua County Library District

Visit the library’s eBranch (www.aclib.us), and click the Digital Media link below the search bar.

Click the red Connect Now button under OverDrive.

You are now in our digital catalog, OverDrive (http://overdrive.aclib.us).

If you haven’t yet used the new OverDrive, you’ll want to Sign In first thing, to set your lending periods.

You will be asked to enter your library card number (no spaces, no dashes) and PIN. Click Sign In.

From your Account page, click Settings.

Set the lending periods to your preferences and click Done. Checkout periods will rely on your settings here.

Browse the OverDrive collection using any of the categories listed at the top of your screen. Or…

Enter a title or author in the Search box at top left.

Available titles will show a dark gray icon at the top right corner. Unavailable titles will show light gray.

Click Available Now to show only items available right away.

In Advanced Search, you can limit by many options, including format or items with available copies only.

Hover over the cover of a title and click Borrow. If you see only Place a Hold, the title is checked out.

Many titles can be Read in your browser.

If you would rather send the book to your Kindle, click on Download, Kindle Book, then Confirm & Download.

You will be directed to Amazon. If you aren’t already, login to the account associated with your Kindle.

Your eBook will be displayed. Click Get library book. *If you don’t have wireless, skip to slide 21.

You will see a “Thanks” confirmation screen explaining your eBook will be delivered the next time your Kindle

connects to Wi-Fi.

• Your eBook should be on your Kindle’s homepage. If you don’t see it at the top, you may just need to scroll down.

• If you still don’t see your title, make sure your Kindle’s Wireless is turned on, and select Sync & Check for Items

Click the Get library book button. Set the Deliver to option to Transfer via Computer.

Click Continue.

You will see the Confirmation screen. You should be prompted to open/save the file.

The Open/Save window will appear. Select Save File, then click OK.

The file will download to your default location -- usually your desktop, or your Downloads folder.

(Don’t try to open – it can only be opened by a Kindle).

If it saves to your desktop (on a PC), it will appear as an icon.

Using the USB cable, connect your Kindle to your computer. Open the Kindle drive on your computer (by clicking the Start

Menu, then My Computer, then Kindle)

Click the saved eBook file/icon, then drag and drop it into your Kindle’s documents folder (or Books for the Kindle Fire)

Right-click on the Kindle drive to safely eject and disconnect from the computer. The eBook will be on your Kindle!
