OILThe Openstack Interoperability Lab
2
OIL - What is the challenge?
22
Openstack APIsPluggable by design
Customers love the fact that Openstack is plugable by design allowing them both to reuse existing investments with their existing vendors and fundamentally guaranteeing choice.
Great choiceComes at a price
This rich ecosystem of options for Openstack comes at a price. Customers and partners really want to know:
● How will the OpenStack cloud connect with existing storage or virtualisation infrastructure?
● Will new storage hardware connect to Cinder?
● Will our new network vendor’s switches work with the existing OpenFlow controllers and SDN stack? and many questions.
… that’s before we consider getting workloads running on different guest Operating systems.
Why the Lab?Driven by customer& partner needs
With so many production Openstack clouds running on Ubuntu it became clear that Canonical needed to step in and offer a solution.
That’s why we launched the Ubuntu Openstack Interoperability Lab.
OIL - What are we doing in the lab?
22
Continuous integration
● This monitors OpenStack’s stable and proposed development trees and pulls down each new commit, then builds and packages it, and tests it against OpenStack on Ubuntu Server LTS, as well as the current and development builds of Ubuntu Server.
● Through this process we are able to rapidly detect incompatibilities or interoperability problems, and identify bugs.
Breadth of testing
● Testing has now been expanded to include different guest operating systems, hypervisors and software-defined networking (SDN) stacks. The OpenStack ecosystem has now grown to a point where, in order to cope with the number of permutations of testing, we have built a dedicated lab and created a programme of engagement for ecosystem members to join.
History
● Since 2010 to ensure that we are able to offer the latest OpenStack releases fully tested and integrated with each new Ubuntu Server release, we created a sophisticated Continuous Integration test system.
● The new OIL Lab is based on that same testing methodology but is greatly expanded
● Physical lab is in Boston, MA, US with it’s own dedicated team.
2Provide technology vendors with a comprehensivetesting environment to validate their technology withcurrent and upstream versions of Ubuntu OpenStack
OIL - Goals of the lab
