MEDIA INTERVIEWS

NEED FOR MEDIA INTERVIEWS:-

The purpose of media interview is to let the public at large and other stakeholder know about the positive happening or achievement of the organisation.

Objective of media interview:-

To boost the image of the company.

To inform about the achievements of the company.

To build goodwill and healthy relations with the public and stakeholders.

Skills needed for media interviews:-

Planning, coordinating and organising skill.

Good networking skills needed to make good contact with various press reporters and journalists.

Knowledge about the situation like benefits to the public, the time of its completion.

Presence of mind to answer the questions with appropriate replies that convey the positive and pleasant picture of the organisation.

Presentation skills needed to take care of vocal, verbal and visual elements of the message to be presented.

Before the media interview:-1. Whether it is appropriate to hold

media interview………..?

2. Anticipate the possible question that journalist will ask and device the strategy of answering them.

3. Decide the timing and venue of the media interview.

4.Ensure that all invitation are sent out a week before the events and should include:-

Date and time Address of venue Location of map of venue Program with timing Names, title and brief biography of

main speakers A clear indication of what will

actually take place.

5.Ensure that proper arrangements have been made and following things are available:-

Table and chairs Microphones Electricity power points and

emergency arrangement Projection equipment for slides Catering ( food, drinks) Name badges Parking and unloading arrangements.

6.Welcome all journalists even those who have not been invited to avoid any adverse publicity.

7. Offer appropriate refreshment like tea, coffee, water, snacks etc.

8. Check your general appearance, dress, hair etc before entering press meet.

9. Distribute the printed material if any as it will develop lines of questioning.

During media interview:-

1. Be attentive throughout the proceedings and keep good eye contact.

2. Ensure that your speech is firm, clear, convincing and well projected.

3. Welcome the media with words like “good morning” “ good afternoon” etc.

4. Establish eye contacts with your audience at the start, in the middle and at the finishing of the statement.

5 .Invite questions after announcing the statement.

6. Avoid being trapped into argumentation.

7. Thank the audience at the end and ask them to lunch , dinner, or tea party.

After the media interview

1. Monitor the coverage on television and papers to assess the impact you have made and to determine whether there is anything more you need to do.

2. Maintain contact with journalists to adequately respond to their interests and to maintain long term contacts with them.

3. Try to learn out of the mistakes you have committed.
