Ancillary Tasks

Digipack

As a group we produced the front and back panel of an album cover.

Individually all four of us created our own panel for the artists album…

I used a composition taken from the music video that we produced, this creates visual links to the audience about the product that they are purchasing.

The composition has a balance of negative space which contrasts against the main subject, which is the artist. It is almost necessary for the album to include visuals such like images, illustrations of the artist so it is recognisable to it’s audience.

Using the composition taken from a scene in the music video, I drew an illustration in the style of a line drawing.

I scanned this into the Mac and uploaded it to Photoshop, this allowed me to experiment with different editing techniques to create a relevant panel for the Digipack ancillary task.

Original drawing

I experimented with filling the negative space with a brown colour pallet to compliment the brand image that we have created for the artist.

I filled in just a section of the artist in the composition to show a contrast against the plain background

I also used the brightness/contrast and

Curves tool to emphasize the shadows and to contrast this greater against the light areas

Threshold ToolThe threshold tool takes the image and eliminates all colour pigments leaving a white and black contrasting composition.

The tool allows you to determine how much white, negative space you have and it also allows you to create a dark, black composition picking up the shadows and marks.

I wanted to use a level of threshold which left minimal black marks, portraying something of a line drawing.

However I believed the strong white and black contrast wasn’t something that had been incorporated throughout any research or development of our media products and it wasn’t relevant.

I selected the colour pigments of the artists clothing from the original image.

This allowed the colour scheme to be relevant and something that flowed through the product.

…Unlike the outcome of using the Threshold tool.

Merging the originals…

Original imagery taken from the music video.

Original drawing taken from the image.

I thought that merging the illustration of the artist with the original background would create an unusual but relevant appearance to the digipack

As all the other panels for the music album were digitally created, I thought this would contrast against the ordinary. Creating something new reflects on the artist as they are creating something new with their music.

Scaling the final composition to size for the music album case.
