Part of meAnalysis no.3
This shot shows a small bracelet with a picture of her and someone else. This
shows that she is in a relationship of some sort. The close up and the outline of a
heart on the bracelet shows that she cares about him. The close up shows the
intensity of the shot.
However in this next shot we see her looking at her boyfriend flirting with
another woman. Her face shows anger in the mirror. This shows that she is looking
over him and that she is heart broken. The fact that she is in a car shows that she
feels detached from him and that she now is distant and cut off.
Here in this medium close up the artist is wearing sun glasses in side. This shows that she is hiding who she really is. She is so hurt
and broken that she feels too damaged to reveal herself.
Here we see a poster recruiting woman for the marines. This close up reveals an
important piece in the story and shows that it is a key to her becoming who she is or wants to be. The poster states all woman are ‘created equal’. This attracts her and draws her in after being treated badly by
her loved one.
Here we see the artist cutting off her hair in the mirror of a public bathroom. She looks
distraught and upset. In this over the shoulder shot we can see that she is losing her old self
and becoming someone else. She is cutting off her hair which is symbolic of her losing her
innocence and womanhood.
Here she is standing in a line in the army base. The symmetry of the shot shows the order and construction of the scene. This is juxtaposed with previous hand held shots when she feels upset and distraught. The
steady shot shows that she has now got her life together, and feels better about herself.
This flash back shot shows both lovers at a carnival shooting games. Both are laughing
and having a good time. The shot is warm and calm opposed to previous shots. This shows that she is recalling a good memory and that
she feels well about it.
The previous shot is juxtaposed with this shot. The toy and the real gun shows how
much she has changed and that she is now more mature and is not using ‘toys’
anymore. This shot is a lot darker and more plain. She looks determined and looks as if
she is keen to move on.
Here we can see the artist carrying another marine. This is hand held and symbolises her
carrying a burden that she is trying to rid herself of. In the background there are other people doing the same, this shows that she
may not be the only one in that situation, and that everyone is carrying their own baggage.
This shot of training is also another symbol of the artist feeling as if she is drowning and that she is suffocating in the midst of all of the actions she has taken and the events leading up to this. She looks as if she is
struggling and that she is trying to fight and overpower her emotions and her past.
This is the only part of the video that is narrated and not performed. The artist sings along to the song and this part is filmed hand held and is a medium close up. She finally looks happy and content
and is wearing make up to show that she is finally happy with her state and that she
can now move on. The background is bright blue showing a sunny or bright
future.
