Geography

Vietnam covers an area of 330,363 sq. km and is

about as big as Italy or New Mexico. The country has

three main geographic regions - the tropical south

dominated by the Mekong River estuary, the dry

central region, and the more temperate north

comprising the River delta and mountain highlands.

Religion

Vietnam supports adherents of all the major world

religions, as well as followers of religions that are

peculiarly Vietnamese: Theravada and Mahayana

Buddhism, Protestant and Catholic Christianity,

Taoism, Confucianism, Islam, Cao Daism, Hoa Hao

and Hinduism. In addition spirit and ancestor worship,

To Tien, is also practiced. Confucianism is probably

the most pervasive doctrine of all.

Climate Vietnam’s climate is very diverse because the

country covers a wide range of latitudes and

altitudes.

The North: The cold season is between November

and April when average temperatures are around

60°F/16°C and it is often wet and chilly. In the hot

period, between May and October, the average

temperature is about 86°F/30°C. The South: The

temperatures in the south are constant all year,

ranging from 77-86°F/25-30°C. The dry season is from

November to April and the wet period from May to

October.

People Ethnic Vietnamese constitute almost 90 percent of

the population in Vietnam. Originating in what is

now southern China and northern Vietnam, the

Vietnamese people pushed southward over several

centuries to occupy the entire eastern seacoast of

the Indochinese Peninsula. Nearly 100 years of

French rule (1858-1954) introduced important

European elements, but the Vietnamese still attach

great importance to the family and continue to

observe rites honoring their ancestors, indicating the

persistence of tradition.

Manners

The Vietnamese used to greet one another by

clasping their hands, prayer-like, in front of their

faces and bowing slightly. Unfortunately, this

charming custom has been replaced by the

handshake. When trying to gain the attention of a

Vietnamese, try not to point or gesture excessively.

This is regarded as rude. Call out their names if

possible, if not beckon by using the whole hand,

palm downwards. Again, as in the other countries of

Southeast Asia, do not touch people on the head as

it is regarded as spiritually the 'highest' part of the

body. Expect to be the center of attention outside

Saigon, Hanoi and the main tourist centers. React

accordingly and be a good ambassador.

“I travel because I like to move from place to place, I enjoy the sense of freedom it gives me,

it pleases me to be rid of ties, responsibilities, duties, I like the unknown; I meet odd people

who amuse me for a moment and sometimes suggest a theme for a composition; I am often

tired of myself and I have a notion that by travel I can add to my personality and so change

myself a little. I do not bring back from the journey quite the same self that I took”

W. Somerset Maugham

Day 1 Welcome to Hanoi (-/-/D)

Welcome to Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. As soon as the group arrives at Noi Bai airport on

their flight from home, the group will be warmly greeted by Refine Asia staff who will assist the

group to clear all formalities and handle the luggage directly to the truck.

At the chosen hotel, the group will be welcomed with cool towels and welcome drinks at the

hotel lounge, while our hospitality staff clear all the check-in formalities for the group.

The guests will have the time to refresh or relay after a long flight. Afterwards, the group will

join a one-hour cyclo ride to get a first impression of this overwhelming city of Hanoi.

Cyclo Ride Hanoi

There are many ways to see the city, but

the best and most unique way to

discover the Old Quarter of Hanoi and its

authentic atmosphere is to take the

traditional transportation “cyclo”.

Starting from the hotel, with the one hour

riding on this special kind of “moving

armchair” through the 36 streets which

are dedicated to 36 different products in

the old quarter of Hanoi, our group will

gain a whole day’s worth of knowledge about the authentic Vietnamese culture and way of

life.

Welcome Dinner at Press Club Restaurant

Gourmet western cuisine is the hallmark of the award-winning Restaurant at the Press Club,

headed by classically-trained Swiss Chef Marcel Isaak, and serviced by a dedicated team of

staff. Evocative of Vietnam in the 1920s, the restaurant features two private dining rooms, a

fully-stocked wine cellar, beautiful polished bar, and international cigar menu.

Overnight in Hanoi

Day 2 Hanoi – Halong Bay (B/L/D) Today, the group will set out early in the morning for their two days excursion to Halong Bay.

Emeraude Halong Bay Cruise

Page 5: Vietnam DMC 10 Days Package Colonial Luxury Tour

Refine Asia Operation Offices: Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Yunnan

Email: [email protected] / www.refineasia.com

Halong Bay is one of the most magnificent scenic spots in all of Vietnam and was recognized

as a world natural heritage site by UNESCO in 1994. Halong is a picturesque bay with almost

2,000 islets rising from the clear emerald waters of the Gulf of Tonkin. The cruise through

Halong Bay wends among otherworldly karst formations and opens up views of one

stupendous seascape after another. Within the two-days cruise, the following sights will be

visited.

Sung Sot Grotto

Early French tourists who wandered among the 10,000

square meters of this cavern dubbed this space "Grotte des

Surprises", or Surprise Cave. The grotto features thousands of

stalactites and stalagmites. Paths, lights and signposts guide

you through two caves which continue to offer yet more

twists, turns and, yes, surprises throughout.

Cua Van and Vung Vieng Floating Villages

Seven hundred people live at Cua Van in a calm bay

surrounded by limestone karsts. Most, not surprisingly, earn

their living by fishing and spend almost their entire existence

living on the water. The following day you will also pass Vung

Vieng Floating Village.

Hang Trong Anchorage

The Emeraude anchors at Hang Trong. Hang Trong , or Drum

Cave, refers to a nearby cave that earned its name as a

result of the sound made as the wind blows through its

stalagmites and stalactites. The waters here are quiet for

swimming and there are lots to explore by kayak.

Titov Island

The island is noted for a beautiful crescent-shaped beach that's popular with swimmers and

water sports enthusiasts. You may also hike 420 steps up to a pavilion at the summit for a

panoramic view of Halong Bay.

Soi Sim Island

On its return to Bai Chay Wharf, the Emeraude cruises past Soi Sim -- one of the few soil-based

islands among the bay’s countless limestone karsts. Soi Sim is rich in natural beauty and

wildlife. Two stunning beaches offer visitors ideal waters for boating and swimming; while

inland, ancient trees are home to a diverse bird population including Black Kites, herons,

egrets, terns and gulls.

A more detailed itinerary of this 2 Days / 1 Night cruise can be found at the end of the

proposal.

Overnight on board in Halong Bay

Day 3 Halong Bay – Hanoi (B/-/D)

After disembarkation from the Emeraude Cruise, the group will be transferred back to Hanoi.

After check-in to the hotel, the group will enjoy a full day sightseeing tour.

Hanoi is one of the oldest and most charming cities in Asia, and apart from its traditional

Vietnamese architecture, there is a French quarter with grand French colonial villas and

broad boulevards lined with sandalwood trees and coffee houses. On this tour the group will

visit Ngoc Son Temple inside Hoan Kiem Lake, Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum, the One-Pillar

Pagoda, the Museum of Ethnology and the Temple of Literature.

Ho Chi Minh Mausuleum: This commanding stone

monument houses the embalmed remains of Ho Chi

Minh, Vietnam’s national hero, and it is a pilgrimage site

for many Vietnamese people. Visitors file silently past his

glass tomb to pay their respects.

The One Pillar Pagoda: Built by the Emperor Ly Thai Tong

in thanksgiving for his heir in 1922, this pagoda is a

Buddhist representation of the world in the form of a lotus

coming out of the water, containing a statue of the

Goddess of Mercy. Originally made of wood on one

single stone column, the current pillar was reconstructed

in 1955 after being destroyed by the French in 1954.

The Temple of Literature: The Temple of Literature is a

peaceful series of walled courtyards and graceful

gateways and is one of the best-preserved examples of

traditional Vietnamese architecture. Founded in 1070

and dedicated to Confucius, this was also the site of

Vietnam’s first university. In one courtyard, giant stone

tortoises bear stelae on their backs, listing the

accomplishments of graduating scholars.

Museum of Ethnology: This museum brings to life the

astonishing ethnic diversity in Vietnam, with art and

artefacts from the 54 different ethnic groups that inhabit

the country. Inside the museum are detailed descriptions

of minority groups, with examples of their traditional

clothing and way of life. Outside are faithful

reconstructions of traditional longhouses, cemeteries

and other distinctive ethnic buildings.

Vietnamese performance art.

Day 4 Hue (B/-/D)

After breakfast in the hotel, the group will be picked up and transferred to Hanoi Airport for

their domestic flight to Danang. Upon arrival in Danang the group will be warmly welcomed

by their guide and transferred to Hue for check-in to the hotel. Afterwards the group will enjoy

sightseeing in Hue including a visit of the Imperial Palace with cylo-ride, the tomb of the

emperor Tu Duc as well as a visit to Dong Ba Market.

The Imperial Palace was completed in 1833 and from

here the emperors of the Nguyen Dynasty ruled Vietnam

until 1945. Entering the citadel via a stone bridge you

can see the Thai Hoa Palace, an important venue for

official receptions and other important court

ceremonies. The ostentatious columns supporting the

roof are lacquered and inlaid with gold. There is a pair of

smaller halls behind the Thai Hoa Palace used by mandarins to prepare for court ceremonies.

Page 9: Vietnam DMC 10 Days Package Colonial Luxury Tour

A one hour pedicab ride gives you a chance to assess the size of the citadel and to watch

the daily life of people living in its boundaries.

The tomb of Tu Duc is one of the most beautiful works of royal architecture of the Nguyen

dynasty. In a sprawling lush pine forest 8km (5 miles) from Hue, this tomb is the final resting

place of Emperor Tu Duc (1848-83) who enjoyed the longest reign of any monarch of the

Nguyen dynasty. The construction of the tomb started in December 1864 and was completed

in 1867.

Stroll around Dong Ba Market at the end of your sightseeing. The remaining day is free for

leisure for the group.

Dinner at Tha Om Garden

Located on the way from the Royal Palace to Linh Mu Pagoda, along with the romantic

Huong river, Tha Om Garde n is an interesting cuisine address for those who would like to

enjoy informal meals in the space of an ancient house once owned by an official family in

Hue. Guests can enjoy their meals in the space of ancient architecture, together with Hue

Royal music. Besides, Tha Om Garden also holds cooking classes, which is taken responsibility

by the hostess.

they will visit the garden house, ancient ancestral temple and

communicate with local people. There will be the chance to visit

incense making families to discover the daily life of local people

while they are working strenuously with joy and enthusiasm. Lunch

will be served at a local house with Hue traditional specialities. Afterwards, the group can

relax by steeping their feet in medicinal herb water – a traditional therapeutic practice.

Moreover, they can enjoy an excellent massage given by blind people. Afterwards return to

Hue.

Overnight in Hue

Day 6 Hue - Hoi An (B/-/D) This morning after breakfast, the group will be transferred to the ancient town of Hoi An where

they will discover the beauty of the blending in architecture of Vietnamese, Chinese and

Japanese who have been living in this small port town since the 17th century. Hoi An was

declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. Its colourful shop houses and temples reflect

a diverse heritage, dating back to the 16th and 17th century, when it was a major port for

Western, Chinese and Japanese traders. Today it is a thriving centre of traditional crafts and a

shopper’s paradise.

As all kind of transportations are banned in the old quarter of Hoi An, the best way to explore

the beauty of this port town is the walking tour. Besides visiting the old temples, the famous

Japanese bridge and some other well-known landscapes of Hoi An, the group also stops at

some ancient houses in Hoi An for tea to learn about the differences in architectures of the

Vietnamese, Chinese and Japanese in this port town.

The remaining day is free for leisure for the group.

Dinner at Nam Long Restaurant

Nam Long (The Dragon of the South) Restaurant is adjacent to De Vong River, orients to Cua

Dai beach, Hoi An. Imposing a unique oriental design together with an exquisite garden

atmosphere, Nam Long will extremely bring tourists the picturesque and friendly scenery

with our original Vietnamese traditional features.

After pick-up from the hotel in Hoi An, the group will ride

by bicycle through a village with simple homes to the

lantern-making house where people produce colorful

cylinder-shaped and pumpkin-shaped lanterns. Workers

in the house will explain which lanterns are made in

Japanese or Vietnamese or Chinese styles before the

guests sit on a short stool next to a young worker who

helps them make a small and typical lantern that they

can keep after the lesson.

Cooking Class at Red Bridge Cooking School

The cooking experience starts with a visit Hoi An’s colourful market, where the group can

experience the amazing sights, sounds and aromas of the busy stalls. The guests will have the

opportunity to interact with the local sellers and purchase some of the ingredients to be used

in the cooking lesson later.

Afterwards they will board the Red Bridge boat for a leisurely cruise (25 minutes) along the

Hoi An River to the Red Bridge Cooking School. This is a chance to view local river life and

enjoy the beautiful scenery.

On arrival, the group will explore the cooking school’s herb and vegetable garden, before

learning about some of Hoi An’s and Vietnam’s well-known dishes. The cooking lesson runs for

about 2 hours – each dish is first demonstrated by the Red Bridge chef’s, before the

guests prepare the same dish themselves.

group will drive by Vespa to the Restaurant Au Manoir de Khai.

Colonial Dinner at the Au Manoir de Khai

The villa housing Au Manoir de Khai was originally constructed during the early 1900s, in

classical French colonial style. Extensive renovations have retained the original colonial

details that, with the lush tropical garden, create a blend of French elegance with a hint of

traditional Vietnam. The blue and gold dining room is well-lit during the day, and made cozy

with warm lighting in the evenings. Exquisite table settings and professional servers who really

know the food guarantee a refined and relaxed meal. Seafood features prominently (and

deservedly) on the all-French menu, although the kitchen does all manner of traditional

French food with skill. The foie gras in particular is a favourite, and is a treat even for the most

jaded Francophiles.

Day 9 Saigon (B/L/D) In the after breakfast in the hotel, the group will enjoy a full day excursion to the Mekong

Delta.

Full Day Mekong Delta Excursion

The Mekong Delta is the richest agricultural area in Vietnam. The Mekong River is known to

the Vietnamese as Cuu Long, meaning "Nine Dragons". After making its long journey from the

Tibetan Plateau, the river splits into numerous small winding tributaries, wide flowing streams

and low lying island to form the Mekong Delta. The region is referred to as Vietnam's "rice

Bowl" from where farmers produce coconuts, sugar cane, a variety of fruit, fresh seafood and

of course rice. Blending into the patchwork of rice paddies are small villages and towns

resting on the river bank, where urban dwellers ply their bustling commercial trade.

Upon embarkation on Cai Be Princess boat, the group is welcomed with fresh cotton towels.

The tour will start with the visit of Cai Be colorful floating market, cruising among local

sampans coming from all provinces of the delta full of fruits and vegetables. The sampan will

proceed to Dong Hoa Hiep island located between Vinh Long and Cai Be. During a 40

minutes cruise, the group will be able to discover beautiful landscapes along the river and

observe the typical Mekong delta rural life. These evergreen islands among the Mekong River

still remain unknown to many people.

Visit at an ancient mandarin house dating from the 19th century where the family will

welcome the guests with a cup a tea.

Page 16: Vietnam DMC 10 Days Package Colonial Luxury Tour

Back on board, the group will observe the activity of the biggest rice stock market. Further,

others stops will allow them to see a traditional bricks and tiles factory and how locals are

using palm leaves for houses. Cruising 20 minutes further to Phu An hamlet passing by Cai Be

beautiful church, the group will have a visit at some interesting home factories to see how

rice paste is made, but also rice cookies, coco candies, as well as longan fruits drying

process.

Lunch will await you at Le Longanier, a superb Indochinese villa located in a lush tropical

garden by the river, surrounded by fruit orchards.

After a short walk along a beautiful canal, the excursion will end at approx. 3.30pm at Ba Bon

Bridge where private transportation vehicle will await the group.

Farewell Dinner at the Le Caprice

Located on the 15th floor of the Landmark Building's, Le caprice is a very elegant French

Restaurant in Saigon. The rooftop bar of the restaurant provides the best views of Saigon's

rising skyline and the bustle of the Saigon River. Waiters in tuxedos help setting the tone at this

most elegant restaurant in Vietnam. The rooftop poolside is the perfect venue for impressive

cocktail service while enjoying the majestic view of the famous Saigon River.

Cu Chi used to be a bitter battleground for many years

during the Vietnam War. Visitors cannot miss a visit to this

'underground village ', an intricate network of over

200km-long tunnels at Ben Duoc, 75km from Ho Chi Minh

City. The group can try a very short segment of this

labyrinth of interlaced tunnel and they will find it

incredible. Then they can make a stop at the Ben Duoc

War Memorial (over 40,000 people have fallen) before

testing their marksmanship with an AK rifle at local rifle range (optional).

Afterwards, the group is transferred to the airport for their departure flight back home.
