Introduction

• A hedge fund analyst by profession, Ryan Hoadley has served with New York City's Newbrook Capital Advisors since 1998. Ryan Hoadley enjoys travel in his free time and recently took a ski vacation to Vermont.

When planning a ski trip, preparation is key. You need to know what conditions are likely to be at your destination, as well as what gear you will need to respond to those conditions. First of all, if the location is remote and you plan on driving, you may need to invest in snow chains or snow tires. Weather is also a consideration for the vacation itself, as snow quality varies with the climate, and your packing list may vary if you are visiting an extremely cold or a more temperate area.

• Either way, you will need to pack outdoor clothing to keep you warm on the slopes and casual clothing to enjoy the after-hours and off-slope activities that enhance a ski vacation.

Those without their own ski equipment can rent it on-site at a resort, though renting from a sporting goods or ski-gear store closer to home can be more cost-effective. Regarding lift tickets, however, the most cost savings tend to come from taking advantage of online deals or by seeking out resort packages that include lift tickets. In some locations, offsite lodging can be inexpensive enough to make up the cost difference.
