Things to do in Bali
Bali is an island situated in Indonesia, at the western tip of the Lesser
Sunda Islands. It is located between the islands of Lombok and Java.
The capital of Bali is Denpasar. The city is located to the south of the
island.
The island of Bali has an estimated 4,225,000 inhabitants, attracting tens
of thousands of visitors every year like Tony Freeman. Almost all of
Indonesia's Hindu minority live on Bali island. 84.5% of the Bali's
population is Hindu compared with 12% of Muslim faith and the rest
mainly Christian.
Bali is the biggest tourist draw of the area. The island is world famous
for its arts, dance and music as well as its sculpture, metalworking,
painting and leather. Every year Bali plays host to the Indonesian
International Film Festival. The island of Bali is located within the
Coral Triangle, a part of the world famed for its huge marine life
biodiversity. The Balinese section of the Coral Triangle alone boasts
some 500 species of coral - approximately seven times as many as can
be found in the whole of the Caribbean. There is a wide selection of
dive sites with reefs of excellent quality.
Scuba Diving in Bali
Bali offers some excellent dive sites for novice divers and experienced
alike. The Sanur dive site lies some 300 metres from the shore of Sanur
and is reached via a short boat ride. The Sanur dive site is made up of
three dives: the Jeladi Wilis, Channel Point and Penjor Reef.
Jeladi Wilis
This is a simple, gentle dive. It starts at three metres, sloping to twenty.
The current can be strong and so diving at slack tide is advisable.
Diving with an experience guide is, as always, a must. Visibility ranges
from five to fifteen metres. There are some interesting corals as well as
stingrays, octopi, scorpion fish and nudibranches.
Channel Point
This location is ideal for dive training making it a very popular diving
location. As the name would suggest, this dive site is situated in a
channel. Coral reefs follow the channel edge which slopes down to a
large, sandy seabed. This location is suitable for novices as well as
those who are participating in a refresher course.
Penjor Reef
The Penjor Reef dive site is just a few minutes' boat ride from Sanur. It
is rated as one of the best dive sites in all of Bali. There is an abundance
in terms of quantity and diversity of mature coral and marine life.
Though visibility can be limited, because there is such a high volume of
marine life this location makes for some stunning dives.
